Just watched this one with you guys for the first time in years, and something occurred to me that might have passed you by as non-Brits, but I think is interesting in terms of the general context. You mentioned them all having big weddings, etc. and I think a key thing in this movie that can run under the radar a little is the British class dynamics that are in play. They are almost all incredibly posh people - it's basically posh people porn, rich people having fancy weddings in gorgeous venues. Notice that the main working class people are Scarlett and Gareth - whose funeral is in an extremely working class setting. I think that contributes to the slightly inside-joke that the richest guy marries a distant relative - the upper classes love to inbreed, etc. etc. So it has a fantasy-esque quality to it that contributes to the overall vibe.

Also worth noting that this and Notting Hill are the same writer! Richard Curtis, who also did Love, Actually. His style wanes towards the saccharine and problematic by that point, though, IMO.
