Yannick, from Montréal

The "briefcase" meeting between Santos and Vinick was so well planned to ensure we got our own take on what to do, and they AGAIN managed to subvert our expectations. The way Santos got Vinick's reaction got him (and us also) pumped up. When he says "It has nothing to do about the Presidency", I wholeheartedly disagree. It shows where his heart is, and how he's there to help out when the situation needs it.

Vinick's press conference was the silver bullet, going against typical strategy to get yourself back on top. And in a realistic way on top of it. Ain't the first time we see Vinick do something that others think is "nuts" (hiring Bruno, do a "Latino week" campaigning about immigration issues but to help them out, not bash on them for no reason, etc.) With the successful tackle of the nuclear issue and one week of campaign left, it's still a coin-toss for the results. Nothing has set anything in stone!

Point of clarification as it feels like J&K believe the previous episode put Santos quite a bit ahead. If you rewatch the cold open for last week's episode, they were talking about "being up" from where they were previously, not "being ahead by that number in each state". Example - Annabeth says they were up 7 in California, then when Donna tells Josh the results she says "we're tied in SC, Arkansas and California", and "we got the new National Tracking polls, it's 44-44, we're tied.....Nationally". They were down 7 points, and are now tied in California. Then Josh and Donna make out and all the shippers scream. :) So the Nuclear Deus Ex Machina pulled the race into a tie, not Santos ahead by a lot and Vinnick needs to make it closer. They're only two weeks out and it is a tie ballgame.

Originally airing on March 19, 2006, 'Two Weeks Out' is Episode 14 of Season 7 of The West Wing. It is the 147th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.0, placing it as the #13 ranked episode of this season and #81 out of all the episodes shown so far.

You're 100% right about the current political environment. Trump already had a secret checkbook that he paid Stormy Daniels with, and we barely even noticed it sitting next to the pile of top secret classified documents in his bathroom. I mean hell, paying child support isn't even one felony, let alone 34 of them. You guys mentioned the camera movement immediately -- this episode was directed by Laura Innes, who played Dr. Kerry Weaver on ER (and she directed some episodes of ER). She may have learned a few things about shooting chaotic scenes there. :) The press conference was a great bit of strategy and a perfect way for Vinick to retake control of his campaign. Of course it only works if you can actually be a straight talker, and Jane is used to campaigning for sycophants. I love the look on Bruno's face, it's like he knows he's watching history unfold, and he's just excited to be there. The conversation between Bruno and Vinick about the briefcase is some of my favorite dialog writing. Bruno in general gets so many great lines in the series, I think the best one here starts with "Don't tell anyone, but I do respect the voters; that's how I win." I can think of a few lines from Charlie and Amy from past episodes on this topic, but Bruno gives the best version of it here.

Ah, remember the days of Howard Dean, where one weird yell could derail an entire presidential campaign?

I love when we get Jimmy Smits and Alan Alda in the same scene together, they're such acting powerhouses. As someone who has worked in media 'til they drop press conferences are very rare for obvious reasons. The 1984 VP nominee Geraldine Ferraro held a press conference lasting almost two hours to discuss an issue surrounding her husband's finances and I always wondered if this was kind of based on that too. Then you had Chris Christie for two hours after the WW aired maybe hoping to emulate Arnold Vinick, lol.

God the briefcase scene with Bruno and Vinick was so good! I would really like to watch ER. I think I would really enjoy it

Alan Alda is so good in this episode. You can really see the wheels turning in his mind, both during the initial conversation with Bruno and during the conversation with Santos. There’s a brief moment during the Santos conversation where you can see that Vinick is trying to decide whether he believes the story about the brother or not. Ultimately, he does, but you can see the flicker of doubt. Jimmy Smits and Ron Silver are great in those scenes too.

Trump held a rally near the Denver airport in October. It screwed up traffic, people missed flights, it was a mess. He had no way to win Colorado, yet he held a rally there anyway. Jerk!

I like that the West Wing authors left it for the viewers to decide if they trust Santos regarding the story about his brother or not.
