There's a famous quote from this episodes directors commentary I love, "The two things that matter the most to me in the work I do - emotional resonance and rocket launchers." Pretty effectively describes all of Whedons best works - great, sometimes way over the top action but always alongside strong character work and storytelling.

And now you have met Angelus in the flesh and no longer by reputation. Idk if anyone else has mentioend this, but to keep it simple people usually call good angel - Angel, and bad angel - Angelus. Angelus is definitely channeling his inner 90s/00s frat bro douche, you can imagine him being named Kyle, with a tribal armband, puca shell necklace, and playing Wonderwall AT you on the guitar.

"Buffy can't catch a break." You're going to say that about 1000 times.

This is when the show went from good to great. And Surprise/Innocence was shown on back-to-back nights moving from Mondays to Tuesdays for the rest of its run.

Such a great episode, a turning point in the show taking it to another level - you guys are right, Buffy was criminally underrated due to its genre, but the world building, the lore, not to mention the writing and performances, it always deserved more recognition! Roll on the rest of the season with a new character, Angelus on board!

Due to its genre and gender, for sure! Exploring why that boy you lost your virginity to suddenly treats you like shit, and not treating it like a joke or an exaggeration, was really groundbreaking!

It’s SMJ’s acting that really sells this. She is just SO amazing in every scene, from the heartbreak in her bedroom when she takes off the ring to the pain of realizing she has nothing left to wish for when she decides to let her candle burn. The actors for Willow and Oz and Giles and Spike have some really fantastic moments of nuance, too, but Buffy centers everything, and every moment of her performance nails how I would feel if I were in that situation. It’s a remarkable way to take this fantastical, supernatural story and make it so intensely personal and relatable for the mortal audience.

This episode is indeed heavy-handed, but Sarah and David really sell it. Angel's behavior toward Buffy is infuriating, and her reaction feels genuine. But don't worry, there's plenty more heavy-handed messaging to come on this show. Some parts are more effective than others. Oz is the best. Not only did he call out Willow's questionable motives, stand up for himself (as well as Xander), and establish clear boundaries with Willow, but he deftly avoided hurting her and left the door wide open for a future relationship. Dude was the perfect gentleman. Giles is also the best. He spoke frankly with Buffy about the consequences of her actions. But crucially, he did so to acknowledge her agency and offer his support, rather than to cast blame. The perfect example of how an ideal father figure would handle this kind of situation. Unfortunately, merely knowing that an Angel spinoff exists spoils some of what's coming, especially for perceptive viewers like you guys. I'm sure you'll still enjoy the ride though.

"I'll just let it burn" never fails to bring me to tears. That poor girl. David Boreanaz is having the time of his life playing Angelus, it's amazing to behold! I really think this is where his acting skill takes a huge turn for the better. This is truly a remarkable episode - it pushes every plotline forward while still keeping the focus where it needs to be, and beautifully sets up the rest of the season.

For some reason I don't mind the heavy handedness. The show is so tongue in cheek I love that it's overt

I have to add this - a lot of people - like seemingly the whole Buffy community - seems to have decided that the "moment of true happiness" that lost Angel his soul was the moment of orgasm, despite that never being mentioned. It clearly was not - it was long after that, when he was holding Buffy while they slept.
