Pre-watch comment. In real life Stalin had extreme high blood pressure and was an alcoholic. When warned by his private physician's to watch his lifestyle and take it easy he had them persecuted. The remaining staff at his death bed found him with 190/110 blood pressure, bleeding from his stomach (an alcoholism symptom) and having wet himself. He had symptoms of ischemic dementia- i.e. lack of blood flow to his frontal lobes causing tissue death and off behavior as if he had had a stroke. In fear for their lives they applied leeches (I kid you not) vinegar compresses to his head and accused rivals of attacking him with rat poison (which causes stomach bleeding) in fear for their own safety if they told the truth. The real info came out later when "de-Stalinization" broke through the BS

The general outlines are based in fact. Beria and Malenov WERE pitted against Krusschev and Zhukov. Krushchev had Beria killed and took 2 years to take power with Zhukov's help. Zhukov basically was involved with defending Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad and defated Hitler's Barbarossa campaign.
