i think its interesting how they changed the movie from the book, in the book the male lead/narrator in the end of the book he never sees her again and can only imagine what her life is like, its a real bummer not hollywood at all Truman capote also said to have based the holly character on marilyn monroe and wanted her to be the lead

Blake Edwards did do Pink Panther he also was the husband of Julie Andrews and when those two would do interviews together you definitely saw her edgier side.

I think Audrey Hepburn did a fantastic performance here. I’m surprised someone hasn’t re-edited this to cut out Mickey Rooney or massively cut it down it’s unnecessary to the movie.

No the Doc character was creepy in the 60s but from areas like where she came from it wasn’t un realistic back then

Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin. There was a big scandal about it though it's legal in some states with the consent of the girl's parents.

Gentlemen: you asked if this had contemporary criticism due to Mickey Rooney- rather than just modern backlash, I did some searching and it appears that multiple critics commented on "extreme stereotypes" and one noted that the buck-tooth prosthetics he wore bore a resemblance to WWII anti-Japanese propaganda films that used the same tropes. So there was some notice of this....I think a good view would be the Mad Men Season 4 episode where Roger Sterling tries to tank the Honda motorcycle campaign in 1965 and the others tell him to get over it. This film was shot in 1960 and released in 1961 so I would think Pearl Harbor and South Pacific battles were more raw since it was just a few years earlier....

Thank you! The proximity to the war fits culturally. It reminded me of some of the old black and white Popeye cartoons, which featured Japanese sailors using the same stereotypes.

I don’t think product placement was a thing at the time. It also was a novel first.

The cat actor was called Orangey and was in dozens of films and TV shows around that time. He has his own IMDb page.

He was amazing. Any cat who would be squeezed between two kissing people while water was being poured on him is a pro.
