i love love love this movie because it's the first and only time i've seen this relationship dynamic portrayed accurately. i felt so seen. especially the "do you like me?" "of course i love you" exchange. i have had that exact exchange with my mom, nearly word for word, and Ladybird was the first film that showed that mom-child relationship. That going from yelling and screaming to "oh, look at this!".

I agree, this is exactly how I felt watching this movie. The mother daughter relationship is on point. I hear you about the "oh look at this" moment, had a few of those. Same with the towels in the bathroom, lol.

I'm with Joe, this is my fave Greta Gerwig film (even though I love the other two a lot). I think because of its subject matter and how realistic it feels but also because it's an indie and the budget was a lot lower but it's still so well done. Greta has said in interviews that it's not autobiographical in terms of specific events but it's emotionally personal and reflects her own experiences and feelings. I also love how well paced it is throughout and the soundtrack and the supporting cast are all just so phenomenal. I'm so happy you guys enjoyed it, thank you!

One of my favourite things in the whole movie is when Sister Sarah Joan talks about love and attention. It was such a wow moment for me when I watched it the first time. Also, as soon as I got out of the movie I called my mum. Then later, I saw an interview with Laurie Metcalf on The Late Show who said people had told her they called their mums so clearly I wasn't the only one, lol.

Meryl didn’t get nominated for an Oscar till 30. The Glenn Close Olivia Coleman year it was a toss up. It was a competition between a big performance and an intimate one so I can see how Olivia won.

I love this movie. They have the religious school student vibe down. Laurie Metcalf was the real standout actress on Roseanne she is such a great actress.

I really thought Lucas Hedges would have a career equal to Chalamet but he’s dropped off the radar the last few years. His only nomination has been from Manchester.

Cristy

I thought so too, he's so talented. He was amazing in Manchester, a film I love but also one that completely ruined me.

so glad y’all watched and loved this, it’s my favorite gerwig as well!! (with little women right behind it tbh)—i love every performance, from saoirse and laurie to even tracy letts (or as i call him, carrie coon’s husband) with his heartwarming dad energy, which always makes me cry… always a comfort watch, especially when i’m homesick, it hits on that feeling of still having affection for where you were raised even when you say you hate it and you have to leave… i love greta gerwig as a director, and if you’ve never seen it, she gives an excellent acting performance in noah baumbach’s ‘frances ha’, another personal favorite of mine! i’m not huge on baumbach either but i genuinely adore that film!! (and shoutout to dave matthews)

Haven't had a chance to watch this reaction yet but I'm excited for this one! My mom and I saw this together in the theater and the ages for the characters matched closely to the ages my mother and I would have been in the early 2000s (I graduated HS in 1999 so I would have been a couple years older than Ladybird). While our relationship was not quite as contentious, we both related hard to this movie but also loved the fact that we'd both grown so much since then and had (and still have) a tight bond. My brother saw it separately from us but noted the similarities as well. To me, one of the small but key moments that made us laugh so much was when they're arguing in the store but spot some clothes they both like and immediately change tones, "ooh".
