Such a great movie despite how deeply frustrating the actual history is. And the present. Good Lord, Phillip Seymour Hoffman is absolutely glorious in this. It’s a small detail, but just before we meet Joanne, we see a full-length portrait of her on the wall — she’s dressed and posed as ‘Madame X’ from the famous John Singer Sargent portrait. Like fine-art-fan-fiction. What a fantastic introduction to her character: wealthy, confident, well educated, and a little kitsch. P.S. I didn’t know Moneyball was a Sorkin movie! I have yet to see it, but I’ve always heard good things…I haven’t seen Bull Durham either but have been meaning to for the longest time. I should probably start making a list ;)

This might be the most FUN Philip Seymour Hoffman role.

From the opening have you guys not seen The American President? The Sorkin movie that inspired the West Wing? if you haven’t that would make a great ending to the West Wing.

Jonathan

Sorkin in an interview said that he was not at his best writing this still dealing with his substance issues. I went into this expecting West Wing level writing. It was nicer to watch it this time without the expectations. Still a better movie than a lot of others.

The belly dancer is actually the daughter of the NFL football coach, Wade Philips. Grand daughter to coach Bum Philips.

I love how this movie was fast paced and informative. Filled us in on so many things while being deeply entertaining

As much as I admire Aaron Sorkin's skills, especially with dialogue, it's important to note that he adapted the screenplay from the original book by George Crile. (Likewise Moneyball was based on the book by Michael Lewis).

I always liked how they had Rodger Sterling dress like Santa in this movie...and then again in Mad Men... -Also, the sound of the jet flying in the background right after Gust was talking about the crazies coming into Khandahar...

So glad you did this movie! It is so underrated!! Great pick guys! Please do The American President! As someone who followed your West Wing journey, you almost have to do it lol

I've always been a big fan of this movie, it's a great story, even though it's difficult to know what's true and what isn't because even today a lot of it is secret. I love that scene in the office when Gust smashes the window, I hope that bit is true, lol. I do think that the movie overcooks the money after part - this wasn't radicalised Afghans, it was external forces that came in and took over to a large extent, even the Taliban, let alone the people they allowed to set up in the country. I mean if the US had stuck around maybe it could have helped, but you'd have never stopped the Taliban taking over by building schools and infrastructure - there was a power vacuum and nobody to fill it - if you send aid money to build schools it isn't going to build schools. The mistake in US terms and what eventually happened was allowing bin Laden and his crew to grow into such a powerful force, not take him out when the opportunity arose and then sure, allowing him to set up a huge base of operations in the country - all of which could have been dealt with. This is the problem with foreign aid, and I say this as somebody not from or in the US and doesn't pay US taxes - you have to be strict about spewing out money into the world by the hundreds of billions, for one thing nobody knows where it comes from so it doesn't even buy you soft power, much of it is stolen anyway, and it is often used to fund crime and fund terrorism. That's why it's always shown to be utterly ineffective and often makes the situation worse - even China achieves more in real terms trading natural resources for roads and the like; though even that has major downsides too - but the smart thing they do is they don't trade cash because cash in the wrong hands is dangerous.

I remember seeing his name on the letter claiming the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation which was very clearly not true and wanting to throw up knowing his name from this movie.
