THe actor Topol was only in his 30s - the irony

Heather Armantrout

The musical is set in 1905, the year of a revolution that is generally seen as the precursor to the 1917 Revolution. Related pogroms against Jews and expulsions across Russia were brutal. Notably, 1907 was the year of highest immigration to the United States through Ellis Island. It would have taken Tevye’s family the better part of a year to make their way to America.

Ben Gilbert

The play was based on the short stories of Sholom Aleichem. The role of Teyve was originated by Zero Mostel who is mostly known for Mel Brooks' The Producers, and for Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.

What a treat! I haven’t seen this movie all the way through in many years. ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ always makes me smile. The Tevye shimmy is everything, lol. I like how he’s always talking to God - the way those conversations are written are so charming. And for all his bluster about tradition, he usually comes around to change…with the exception of Chava & Fyedka, unfortunately, and it’s heartbreaking. Kevin - “…but where would they build a home together?”/“Florida.” — Hahaha! Well done. Joe - Great choice! ‘Sunrise, Sunset’ is my favorite tune here as well. And good memory with all the Dr. Zhivago references. The fiddler - Tevye talks about this a little bit at the very beginning. He’s the embodiment of finding optimism in a very precarious existence.

Joe and Kevin- have you guys seen the movie version of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way top The Forum"? It's hillarious

I commend the two of you for not singing along - I would not have been able to resist.

Frau Sarah´s antics totally Helena Bonham Carter vibes.

I also thought of Lenin seing Dobtcheff in this. First time I saw him actually. Less amusing than a certain Butler cameo in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade I guess.

My brother and sister were in their high school production of Fiddler on the Roof, my sister actually played the fiddler and my brother was one of the unnamed townspeople. It was an incredible production…they did all the cool effects for the dream sequence with the ghosts and they had like 8 guys do the bottle dance at the wedding, real bottles, no tricks, and I think it was 2 of the 6 shows that went perfectly with no broken glass 😂 I would not doubt that the dancers in this film did it for real too.

A treat to watch this with you both of you. I was taken to see this late in its original run when I was 11. But I really fell in love with Fiddler a year after seeing the movie when my parents took me to see it on stage.

Excited to watch this with you. I've never seen it and honestly, the only things I know about it I learned from Gilmore Girls (where I learned about most things lol), so this will be a treat.

If this was a rewatch they might have. Or they are that insecure about their singing voice? ^^

So I worked as an usher for a theater here in Denver and I worked Fiddler when it toured here, don't remember much from it though. All I remembered was the dancing with the bottles on the heads.

This is one of my favourite musicals. I grew up as the only Jewish kid in my small WASP town and I still remember the local theatre company doing Fiddler and all of a sudden for a few weeks I felt seen by the community for the first time ever. Haven't watched the film or seen a love production since becoming a father to a daughter more than 4 years ago, hits different now. Tevye is such a great character!
