This was my huge movie growing up Jewish. I got to see Topol in a live performance during his last run onstage. He is incredible and this movie is phenomenal. I've never been around so many other Jewish people at once before, it was amazing

Topol played Tevye 3,500 times: from the '67 London premiere thru his 2009 revival tour. Hardest working man in show business.

The original play of "Fiddler on the Roof" was based on stories by Sholem Aleichem about "Tevye the Dairyman" and his family. The stories take place around 1905 in the area that is basically now Ukraine, about ten years before the war, but there were revolutionary ideas already spreading throughout Imperial Russia. After pograms swept through southern Russia during this time, Aleichem and his family emigrated from Kiev to Geneva and eventually to New York City. He became one of the most popular writers in the country, and when he died in 1916, his funeral was one of the largest ever in New York City history, with an estimated 100,000 mourners. This film won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Music: Scoring Adaptation. You guys are too young to recognize him, but Perchik was played by Paul Michael Glaser, who later became famous as Starsky from the tv show "Starsky and Hutch." He's still with us today at age 82. On a personal note, I was fortunate enough to be able to play Tevye in our school production when I was fifteen. Even though we were a bunch of teenagers in fake beards (well, the boys, anyway), we did a surprisingly good job for a three hour musical. It was the first time I was exposed to such immersive information about the culture and history of the Jewish people, and it has stuck with me all these years. I picked this film simply because I love it and have happy memories of it, but I didn't entirely realize how applicable it still is to our world today.

The original Broadway version of this had Zero Mosel also famous for the original Producers Mel Brooks movie and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Topol starred in the British production. Bea Arthur was also in the original US Broadway cast as the matchmaker.

I love this musical, and was very happy to watch it along with you. (Incidentally, Prime just told me, it will be removed in 4 days, or whatever, so great timing). Some incredibly catchy and good songs (as you said, it just became part of culture). Great cinematography. A very emotional and effective story, effective till today. Yeah, Topol was the biggest name on the cast, and Fiddler is his role. Interestnig tidbit: he was around 35 during the filming, so he obviously had to use wigs and makeup to appear older. He must have grown into the role, portraying it in theater for so many decades... Thank you, guys!

So was Bette Midler, in the original production starting at age 19! First as Rivka and later as Tzeitel (neither original cast, both as replacements). She also understidied Fruma Sarah.

Thank you for picking this Jeff. Very much enjoyed this and I really do think this a great companion piece to Dr. Zhivago. I bet you made one heck of a Tevye!
