Another great movie about a music teacher is "Music of the Heart". Based on a true story, and starring Meryl Streep!

I hadn't seen this movie since I saw it in theaters when I was 9, honestly surprised how much I still remembered of it and how much more I relate to it 30 years later. I was thinking about the It's a Wonderful Life comparison all the way until you brought it up at the end :) Clarinet ends up working out for Gertrude but good call on finding a different instrument if you're not having fun. I took violin lessons, some private some in school orchestra, on and off from when I was 5 or 6 through highschool and was never any good, but guitar (the instrument I always wanted to learn anyway) came so much easier when I finally picked it up as a teen. Mainly because it was fun in a way violin wasn't for me. Not that I claim to be very good at guitar either but at least I have fun. When I was still playing violin in chamber orchestra in highschool the music teacher "volun-told" me into playing percussion in marching band, they were desperate enough they wanted anybody who could read music. So I wasn't starting as completely from scratch as Lou but I can relate to getting roped into that. I got violin lessons for a while from a family friend whose whole family was very musical (she played in a local symphony), and one of her sons was deaf and played guitar, so it's great to see the representation in this movie that deaf people can appreciate music.

Always enjoy watching this film. Such believable and empathetic performances. I knew tears would well up when he sang that song to his son. So precious. So raw. Thank you both for sharing your thoughts and insight.

That is definitely a keep the tissue close kind of movie.

Every time I watch this movie I think of my mother who was a teacher. She was particularly dedicated to her students and had several students that received top marks in their final HSC results (In Australia we have the HSC which is similar to the US SATs). She would often have her students over for a pre HSC study session / bbq a few weeks prior to the tests and I got to meet at lot of her students. She would spend extra time with several students to help them. When she passed in 2012 over 200 of her previous students attended the funeral, my family was blown away with this - Teachers are so under appreciated.

It was Damon Whittaker, Forest's brother.

I started with the violin as well! I never really enjoyed strings to be honest but transitioned to the trumpet because of a band/history teacher. Loved playing the trumpet. Much better fit for me.

Governor Lang is also Jordan Kendall... Leo's lawyer and semi-girlfriend on the West Wing.

This movie is a true Opus. You guys are on quite a roll lately!

I have a flag for each of my maternal grandparents. When my father passes, I’ll have one for him, too. It probably doesn’t do anything to ease the pain, but it’s a token of your loved one that you can have in your home. You don’t have to go to their grave to feel like you’re honoring them, and in low moments, it can even feel like you’re communing with them. The flag as tangible reminder of the person you loved can be a powerful thing.
