Yay! I’ve been looking forward to this one!

This movie always brings back a lot of memories for me. When I was a kid, my dad was a high school band director. I remember running around the band room on nights/weekends. My brother and I would crawl around under the chairs — which, come to think of it, is super gross because spit valves, but we were little and blissfully unaware. And then every once in a while we could go in the store room with all the spare instruments and sousaphone parts hung on the walls — that was our elephant graveyard, a la Lion King. (He also worked part time at a small recording studio in town, and the mixer board was the dashboard of our space ship.) Good stuff. Ok, gonna press play now :)

My grandma took me to see this when I was little..kind of. She accidentally walked us into the famously kid-appropriate movie Leaving Las Vegas instead, and it took her WAY too long to realize we were in the wrong theater 😂 we did finally get to this one and I loved it

This movie was such a huge deal when I came out. Large amount of Best Picture buzz and I got dragged to see this a few too many times and don’t think I’ve seen it since. This should be a fun watch as an adult.

I played tenor sax in band, and, yes, we played Louie Louie.

I’m so glad you liked this movie! And delighted to know you both played! Saxophone and trumpet seem fitting for you guys :) I played clarinet primarily, and trumpet in the summer for marching. Agreed, the movie is very sentimental, but never cloyingly sweet, which is great. The song for Cole gets me every time too. And the concert at the end is wonderful, but I do giggle a bit, just because… how many of the alumni have played their instrument (regularly) since high school? How’s everybody’s chops holding up? Things could get real rough a couple minutes in, lol. Anyway. Great movie!

I haven't touched my trumpet in over 30 years! (I think it would be especially difficult for a governor to find time to practice! )

Thanks, guys, for watching my movie... I know this type of movie isn't for everyone, but I had a hunch you would see it for all that it has to offer. Music has always been my passion in life. This movie brings me back! Not only did I have a great music program at my school, but my Uncle was the band teacher! We had music appreciation and music theory classes that I took. Any credits I had available in my class schedule went to all things music! I was also in the choir, and my choral director was such an incredible teacher. He is the Director of Music at UCONN, now! We always knew he was so much bigger than our little town! All of these years later, it's a tradition for the director, at the holiday concert, to always ask for all the choir alumni to come sing the Hallelujah Chorus with the students at the end of the concert. Then they ask my director to come up and conduct us all to close out the show! It's always so great to see all of the people who make it there to sing every year. It always kicks off the Christmas holiday season! I remember the first time I went back to see a concert at my high school. I was tearing up before it even started... the stage was still dark, and the students pushed the baby grand piano onto the stage. Just to see the piano that was such a big part of my life... it made me so emotional. I play a few different instruments, but the oboe is what I play most. My husband is a drummer, and our son plays alto sax. We all did marching band, too. In our school, if you were in concert band, you HAD to do marching band. The oboe is not a marching instrument, so I was in the color guard for my freshman and sophomore years. Then, over the summer, I took a sousaphone home to learn how to play it, and then I played it for junior and senior year marching band. This movie came out three years after I graduated, and it's always been so special to me! This is my favorite Richard Dreyfuss movie! The actress who plays Roweena Morgan (Jean Louisa Kelly) also played Tia, the oldest niece in Uncle Buck (1989). More recently, she played Iceman's wife, Sara Kazansky, in Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Sorry to burst your bubble, but Dreyfuss was not actually playing the piano. He faked it pretty well, though! The soundtrack for this movie is pretty incredible! It really helped to tell the story, especially when it came to Cole. I love the name they gave him... my Uncle and Aunt named their daughter, Allegra! She's a short and peppy kind of person who is now also a music teacher. Gertrude Lang (Alicia Witt) is one of my favorite characters in this movie. Her story arc is so special, and I still cry when she walks into the auditorium as the Governor at the end of the movie! Thanks again, guys! I hope you love this movie as much as I do!
