This is such a good episode! I think it's another great example of showing the complexities of characters: -Rory, understandably, wants to know how Jess got hurt BUT she presses him too much at dinner -Jess, understandably, doesn't want to talk about his black eye at dinner BUT avoids the subject for too long and communicates poorly per usual -Lorelai is, I think, unnecessarily nervous about Rory and Jess being alone together BUT she goes to New York anyway and trusts Rory -Emily keeps it together during dinner BUT then she looses it when she's talking to Lorelai (I think communicating more calmly would have gotten her point across better, ie "he belongs in jail" lol she's so over the top...but also funny) Anyway GG shows the complexities and realness of the characters and how they are all flawed and lovable and this is just another example!

I honestly feel a little bad for Jess here--it sounds ridiculous, but swans can be super aggressive! I assume Jess got a little too close to a nest. I also don't feel like Rory gave him much of a chance. Yes, he should have been more clear, but Rory's communication also sucked! When he said he didn't want to talk about it, she could just as easily said, "Ok. Let's get through dinner and you can tell me on the way home." She wouldn't let it drop! I'm not at all surprised that he got more and more defensive. She refused to believe him when he said it wasn't Dean. She accused him of lying more than once. I think I might have walked out, too

Jess played it somewhat badly but he was really trying to act appropriately in front of Emily. Yes, he should have said, "it wasn't a fight, just an accident, we'll talk about it later." But Rory completely lost all manners and turned it into a scene and would not let it go. She totally ruined any chance that Emily would have a good impression of Jess. If she really distrusts him that powerfully she shouldn't be with him.

I also love how Emily's love of Rory shines through here. She's being very understanding and gracious in front of Jess (and Rory). Feels totally natural that she would release her real thoughts to her daughter later. :)

Good point about the flashbacks from last ep showing us details we seem to have needed....I think often we are led to believe that Lorelai was just abandoned or rejected by her parents at the time, or that Christopher never showed up. As usual, it's not black and white like that.

The older I get, the more I can see Emily's perspective as well, and where she's coming from in her complex relationship with Lorelai.

Another strong episode! Great Emily moments plus an amazing scene between Luke and Jess. I will say that I found the chase between Rory and Jess more fun than their actual relationship now that they are dating. Maybe it's because we don't get episodes where they're just happy in the relationship. There's always a fight or an issue ever since they've started dating.

Yeah re the previous episode - I don’t think the issue was ever that Emily and Richard didn’t show up or weren’t involved enough with Lorelai and baby Rory, I think it was the exact opposite. Lorelai felt they were controlling, and they probably were because they saw her as a child, but she felt suffocated and that’s what she wanted to get away from. Anyway I love Emily this episode.

Swans can be VERY aggressive... especially, the males! I grew up on a lake that had 2 swans. They do mate for life, and the males are very protective of their female and their cygnets (baby swans)! The male we named George, and the female was Gertrude. The second their babies were hatched, George used to chase my Dad around the house in circles! He was so mean! My mom used to feed them off the back deck! We had a small rowboat that we used all the time, but while Gertrude was in the nest, with her eggs... we had to stay far away from her! George wasn't messing around! He'd just appear out of nowhere! A vicious, vicious bird!!! LOL!

I like the conversation between Lorelai and Rory in the end but asking Rory to tell her first seems kinda odd, doesn't it? Like, what is she going to do with that information besides feel awkward and worried that everytime she's with Jess, she might be having sex. I don't know, it's just not something I would want to tell my mom and we also have a very close relationship 😂
