You had me sitting here like, "who tf was Hope Davis on The West Wing!?" for like 5 minutes. I'm guessing you meant Succession.

I don’t mean to be negative, but I don’t have anyone else to talk to about this, and I welcome other perspectives. The MacKenzie/Will thing takes up a lot of space, narratively, and I don’t feel like it’s nearly as compelling as the portrayal of the nitty-gritty of putting together a news show. They have chemistry, undeniably, but the whole backstory and how it looms over present day is just really distracting to me. I feel like it would have been much more interesting if their dynamic was not romantic. Maybe former rivals at a previous job or people who started on an identical path in college and then diverged ideologically before coming back around to the same worldview (like a corporate vs non-profit trajectory). Heck, I could even buy them as step-siblings who took that familial antagonism into the workplace, but have each other’s backs come hell or high water. I just find the “they’re soulmates who have to heal through past baggage to be happy, but will fight a lot in the meantime” to be very stale. Perhaps it’s because, besides seeing glimpses of that kind of dynamic in The West Wing (like with Toby and his ex-wife or Sam and Mallory, etc), I’ve also seen this dynamic on Sports Night and Studio 60. It’s a very Sorkin lens for what makes a romance compelling- mutual respect, attraction, continuous sparring, and a backstory that makes getting together really complicated so that the people who are obviously perfect for each other are perpetually kept in the will-they/won’t-they holding pattern that is supposed to give the characters added depth. It makes one imagine that being in a relationship with Sorkin would be so exhausting.
