It´s a little bit hard to believe Harry the one, but I get it. He seemed weak of character, but having integrity. He was only candidate for sheriff for his precious fire brigade and even that was for the hat and maybe car. So to give him a coureageous role so to speak, but not needed daily. And because of being candidate for the post, maybe only finding odd jobs for so long and with harmless yet good character Bullock would accept him as assistant. Harry doesn´t seem greedy, but even he needs money. Hearst could make use of all this. Writing wise he is a dark horse. We know him superficially enough to accept him close to Bullock for the latter have his shield down yet still only duringthe entire movie not expecting him. Only when harry approached the office while Jane looked at him and the mood changed we instantly know.

I wouldn't have characterized the Harry of the show as "good" so much as, as you say, weak of character. I think that's best demonstrated when he killed Bummer Dan mistaking him for Slippery Dan. He also wasn't very bright ("eggplants shred the roof of my mouth"), but he may have wised up a little bit by now. Still, ten years of institutional power for a guy like him opens him up to exploitation, especially from Hearst who gave him that power in the first place.

The real Al Swearengen was born in 1845, so he would've been 44 at the time of this movie. He (surprisingly) lived on until the age of 59, when he was apparently murdered. He was found dead with a massive head wound on a suburban Denver street. Unlike the character in this movie, the real Seth Bullock left Deadwood before 1889. He and Sol Star purchased a ranch together, and Bullock is credited with introducing alfalfa farming to Dakota in 1881. He became sheriff of Medora, North Dakota, and in 1884 he met Teddy Roosevelt and they became life-long friends. Bullock was appointed a US Marshal in 1905 by President Roosevelt and again in 1909 by President William Howard Taft. He died of colon cancer in 1919 at the age of 70. I hadn't seen this movie until now, so thanks for the great reaction. Like you said, there was a lot of fan service, but I think it was elegantly done, and resulted in a very satisfying finale to an exceptional series.
