Actuarial Lurker

Never heard of this until you reminded us that it was in That's Entertainment!

Ben Gilbert

On stage, subtle acting doesn't work. The people in the back of the upper balcony can't see small changes in facial expressions, so the actor has to play to the back row.

Carl Wilson

Haven't watched yet, but will! Just wondering, I assume you guys know that this is the musical version of Philadelphia Story (1940) with Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, and Katharine Hepburn?

This movie is so much fun! And the cast - Bing, Frank, and Pops all together - what an embarrassment of riches! “Crooning is awesome. I don’t know why it went out of vogue.” Right?! I don’t know either. It’s a tragedy. Yes! The tune in the library (‘Well did you evah…’) is brilliant - probably the best in the film. All the little jokes in there remind me so much of the old Bing Crosby/Bob Hope ‘Road to…’ movies; they did a lot of that. And you’re right, we don’t have anything like them today. *le sigh*

I would LOVE a musical that just said "screw it, let's just get the most talented stage actors we can cast and do some quality film making." Instead, we get...Cats.

I mean, there ARE still actors that learn to sing for a role and crush it, see Andrew Garfield in Tick Tick Boom. Maybe he couldn’t crush it like that if he did eight shows a week including dancing and singing his heart out. But considering he did have a run of Angels in America on stage, which must be soul crushing, I wouldn’t put it past him! Anyway, thank you for the reaction! I would have never clicked on it, but am super grateful it came on in the automatic playlist- it was fun, and I loved your discussions!

That's a fair point. Garfield was terrific in TIck, Tick...Boom. I would just love to see a film musical adaptation with seasoned Broadway talent.

Carl Wilson

Kevin, relax, I'm pretty sure they drop anchor before they go to bed. (ha, I didn't mean for that to sound dirty, but they were on their honeymoon after all.)

Thanks for watching. I picked this because I watched Kevin's reaction to The Philadelphia Story a few months back, so it was amusing to see the wheels turn as he discovered this is the musical version. It was also amusing that you guys mistook this to be a Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra movie. I'm a big fan of both of them and their movies together so I will definitely be adding them to the list down the road if others don't before me.

Honestly? This has some fun moments, but I always found one of the basic points the story was trying to make to be... repulsive. I mean, seriously? The daughter is somehow responsible for her dad cheating? You would think that would have been taken out of this version, but, no, it's in here just as it is in the original version. There's a reason this was never re-made again. It's fun, sure, but there's some really strange ideas about cheating in a marriage and somehow other people are responsible for it or wrong for not sucking it up and accepting it. Also, there's Grace Kelly's character complaining about "The high cost of being rich". In other words, the rich are taxed fairly and don't get to keep the Gilded Age mansions their grandfathers had. I guess that's a bit at odds with modern sentiment as well. Otherwise? The film is a feast for both eye and ear. Everyone in it is a seasoned pro.

I get where you're coming from. Regarding the rich, some of it reminded me of Succession in that way. Obviously very different stories but yeah, lots of gross behavior
