I gasped! So excited for this!

Andy Schreiber

I've never even heard of this show! Excited to check it out.

Jess Color

I'm so happy this is happening!

Dan Harris

What amazing news to wake up to. Can't wait to watch along with you!!

JC

OMG I loved teenage bounty hunters, but until today have never heard it referenced (probably why it got cancelled).

JC

The crystal ball is “Network” from 1976 and I’m convinced Sorkin tries to recreate it in all of his works. He finally just goes all out here.

HoneyBea

OMG, this is one of my all time favourite shows. Brilliant!

Suzanne Whyte

It was on NBC. I loved The West Wing and The Newsroom but despite the great cast I originally quit this show after three episodes. I’m not sure why it didn’t hold my attention at the time but I’ll give it another try.

Jonathan

This premiered on NBC on a Monday 30 Rock premiered that Wednesday. I never finished the series and haven’t rewatched it. Curious how I like it now with low expectations. After some time Aaron Sorkin had the best answer why it failed. “Writing a television show is not a good substitute for going to therapy”

This is one of the best pilots ever made, but unfortunately that's the best it gets for me. As you'll see, a lot of it just doesn't work, so it's pretty disappointing. But it does have some fun and moving moments, and Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry are always worth watching. I saw this when it was first on TV, and when I rewatched it a few years later I liked it better. I'll be really interested to see how you guys react to this.

Tina

Omg yay!! Looking forward very much to watching with you tomorrow!

The ratings weren't what the network had hoped for, particularly by the end of the season, but they were actually better than 30 Rock's. The problem was that the show was just way too expensive.

Sly_Budlong

I'm so SO HAPPY you guys are reacting to this!! There's so many episodes I can't wait for you to get to!! 🙌🏽

Sammy Fan

Yay! Thank you for doing this.

EricG

Very excited for this. I love this show

Why did the costumer put Amanda Peet in her exact same costume from Igby? Even the same hairband.😆 Quite the dopamine high, though. Whew! The introduction of great actor after great actor after great actor just knocking their lines outta the ballpark--but just like with SNL's geniuses, it gives me this tension in the pit of my stomach.

Both 30 Rock and Studio 60 premiered on NBC in the same season and that is a lot of what killed this show was the network competing against itself. S60 had huge production costs and it's lead in was *Heroes* and it couldn't maintain that viewership. It got massive backlash for being "smug" and "self-righteous", treating sketch comedy as high drama and being less relevant than The West Wing. Add in the writer's strike back then and this show just could not stay the course.

The Matt and Harriett relationship is based on Sorkin's real life relationship with Kristin Chenoweth. Nate Corddry, who portrays Tom Jeter, was Larry Wilson on For All Mankind. Three 6 Mafia won the Oscar for original song from Hustle & Flow. This series was on NBC. This series premiered right as more prestige television dramas were moving to cable. This premiered in 2006, then in 2007 Mad Men and Breaking Bad premiered on AMC. I do think this show would’ve worked better as a 10-12 episode cable series, similar to what Sorkin would get with the newsroom.

Adam Sandler, in my opinion, is one of the most unfunny people I've ever seen....

SO based on the attached that describes the film financing and completion bonding process this premise was realistic. Some major insurance companies have taken a real bath on this even on record busting films due to "creative accounting" and there was major litigation about 20 years ago since many different parties have their snouts in the trough before a film "technically" makes a profit https://www.marklitwak.com/blog/financing-movies-and-completion-bonds

Super-thrilled to see this show added. While my mind knows the West Wing's better, Studio 60 is still my go-to Sorkin show, even with its imperfections. Interested to see how y'all view it in the end. As you can see from the thread, it's definitely a show that gets mixed reviews.

This didn’t air in Australia at all. I first watched this series when I was ‘incarcerated’ on a long flight between Sydney and LA back in 2011. All 22 episodes were on the in-flight entertainment system. I was searching for something good to watch and saw the thumbnail with Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry and couldn’t select it fast enough. Proceeded to watch pretty much the whole series during the next 13 odd hours of the flight getting absolutely no rest at all and arriving in LA feeling like death warmed up. Thinking that surely there would be a second season I looked it up online and was horrified to see that it had been cancelled without any further seasons. Luckily was able to buy the series on DVD while I was in the US. The show had so much potential. Such a great premise too. Brad and Matt have such an authentic relationship it really shows up on the screen. The rest of the cast including many West Wing alum were incredible. Been a fan of Sarah Paulson since she starred in a weird TV horror show called American Gothic way back in the 90s - Actors often struggle to realistically portray “comedians” but I think she pulls it off here - will be interested on your take over the coming episodes - excited to watch this with you guys

- I'll never know why someone decided to have both this show and 30 Rock on the same network -- debuting in the same season! - Three 6 Mafia won Best Original Song for "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle & Flow (2005). Beating out Dolly Parton's "Travelin' Through" (for Felicity Huffman-starring Transamerica) and "In the Deep" from Crash (written and sung by Kathleen York -- Toby's ex on The West Wing). - Glee hadn't started yet when this aired, so I had no idea Jayma Mays was on this show! Just an absolute treasure trove of "hey, it's that guy"s. - Cost aside, I think the real reason this show didn't take hold was that the moral urgency of Sorkin's writing was a wild fit for a show about essentially SNL in LA. It was perfect for a show about the White House, with the life-and-death stakes of every episode. But people didn't want to think about SNL as political (at least at the the time); I think with the recent Kimmel and Colbert situations and insane FCC overreaches, it might be better received today, especially in a 10-13 episode cable format.

Well this is exciting. :) The one Sorkin show I haven't seen, so I'm along for the ride this time! I'll tell ya what, the man can write a pilot like nobody else.

Erin

I love this show so much, and I’m glad you guys are reacting to it! This show was my intro to Aaron Sorkin. I loved Friends and Matthew Perry, so when I saw he was going to be in a new show I jumped on board immediately. I loved it and even though I’d never seen The West Wing, I’d heard good things, so I put the first season on my Christmas List that year.

Dil

Very excited about this! I love this pilot too! It feels so lived in!

Anjali Agarwal

I'm so glad that you're reacting to this show. Should have lasted more than one season.

Just Lily

You should check out the Studio (2025), hillarious show about movie business and only 10 episodes

Gabrielle Colen

I was very happy when you did The West Wing. I was excited when you did The Newsroom. I am ecstatic that you are doing Studio 60.

Gail Hislop

Matthew Perry’s work in this show was extraordinary and he and Brad Whitford have such good chemistry as a team. Love Tim Busfield’s character in this. The weekly guest actors and musicians guests will blow your mind, along with most of the cast that you’ve already seen. This was Simon Helberg’s first real tv role pre Big Bang Theory so it’s interesting to see him doing sketch comedy routines in this and I would say how he landed the role on BBT. Amanda Peet is sublime and she is definitely working right now with Season two of Apple TV series Your Friends and Neighbours as a lead alongside Jon Hamm. It’s going to be an interesting 22 episode watch for you guys.

Tina

Holy cow I did not know about Timothy Busfield yet. What a punch in the stomach. :( I usually struggle to differentiate actors or creatives from their characters / creations after allegations like this. But for Danny and Cal, I'll try hard, I don't want that flavour attached to them. Ugh. I'm so glad we live in a world where ppl can come forward at all, though, whatever the hit to my personal enjoyment of fiction may be. Sad though.

Tina

Despite the Busfield shock, I still love this pilot. It aired together with the next episode, and it blew me away! While I do have some quibbles with the show, I also think it hits some of the highest Sorkin highs there are, and I can't wait for you to get to my favourite episodes, of which there are many! Brad and Matthew are such a dream team. Every time I rewatch Matthew Perry interact with Josh on The West Wing (he replaced Ainsley), it makes me chuckle - they are both such fantastic actors, their dynamics are so different in each show. Note the drugs theme, too - here, it's right in the first ep. It's one of the things I love about Sorkin - he normalises grown adults talking about their addiction struggles openly, and with a lot of empathy. This episode is a banner ep for this - the first thing Matt asks Danny is if he is okay, his feelings about their professional future, and being hurt about not being told immediately, come a distant second and third. I couldn't love Matt any more in moments like these, he is honestly one of the most real Sorkin characters, and that's all Matthew Perry, I think. I'm glad you recognised Merritt Wever eventually - this role was the first time I saw her, and I've loved her ever since. (I think her best role is in Unbelievable, but that's a really tough watch for other reasons.) Jordan McDerre is one if my favourite Sorkin characters. I keep wondering the heights to which she could have risen had we got her for seven seasons - just imagine only getting CJ for one season, and then compare S1 CJ to S7 CJ... I shall talk about other characters in later episode comments, I don't want to influence your expectations. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the next episode - the x, and the other x, and their x, and that time, and and and... I'm so happy you put S60 on the schedule!

Paul T Hewes

-Between Busfield and Felicity Huffman, there were a few stars whose shine has dimmed in the almost 20 years since the show came on. -Matt and Danny = Aaron Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme. Aaron had the coke habit, but is the writer. Tommy is the director.

Roland

I've seen Amanda Peet before...in something...dunno. There's plenty of Hollywood starlets with amazing smiles, but Peet's look is...hypnotic. Her screen presence is wild, in the best possible way.

Roland

So my wife is...okay...with The West Wing (she suffers through my non-stop gushing), but she mostly enjoyed The Newsroom. I loved the pilot of Studio 60, but I don't want to drag Her Ladyship into watching this series if it doesn't hold up. What say you?

Nicholas Reed

When the shows first came out, 30 Rock actually aired a commercial where the premise was that Alec Baldwin agreed to do 30 Rock because he was excited to work with Aaron Sorkin and thought 30 Rock was his show.

TalynOne

Doing a personal re-watch of The Good Wife. In the episode I'm watching Judd Hirsch is playing a loose cannon Judge, Amanda Peet a prosecutor, and there's an ongoing story line where Mathew Perry is playing a candidate for Republican Governor. It's like a Studio 60 reunion.

Hooper

I was a huge Sports Night and West Wing fan, and I was very into comedy when this launched, so I was extremely excited for it. From what I remember the pilot episode either was released or leaked online early, maybe months in advance of the premiere, and it was great, so anticipation built. Everyone thought this show would be amazing, and between this and 30 Rock starting at the same time, everybody's money was on this show succeeding and 30 Rock failing. Then the second episode aired. And the third. And the rest. And gang? It's a bad show. That being said I haven't watched it since it originally aired, and seasons 5-7 of The West Wing definitely grew on me when I watched them with you even though I would've said I didn't like them at the time, so who knows? I'll try to keep an open mind! But yeah, this is giving me flashbacks to how high my hopes were watching this first episode, and then what came after.

Tori Hawley

YES! No one watches this for reactions. But so good!

Bekka NoyB

Agree - one of the best pilots ever made! The fact that this show was cancelled while 30 Rock got 7 seasons is just a travesty! You'd be wrong, both shows were on NBC. I think NBC didn't like Sorkin kinda taking shots at them/network TV. Really wish Sorkin had did this show for HBO. Maybe coulda got 3-5 seasons? To be fair some of the cast weren't that famous yet. Think this was Sarah Paulson's first big break.
