This debuted in 2006, the same year as the television writer's strike that killed most of that year's TV season. That was also the same year Pushing Daisies came out and the strike killed most shows that premiered in fall of 2006. The story that ends up being shown throughout the episodes was meant to be told over at least 3 seasons but, knowing it was going to be cancelled, Sorkin wrote the final episodes so that viewers got closure and tied up the loose ends.

I'm sohappy we are doing this! Just wanted to go to sleep, but now you guys made me stay up an hour late (and look for my S60 DVD box!). I agree with you all, this show is full of talent. And I love this show, even though objectively, there are some issues with the writing and quality on the lon term. I think the main reason it got cancelled was simply it costs were huge, but it did not bring ENOUGH views for those costs. But I was really sad it was cancelled, still. And, having a good, Sorkin-quality writing and dialigues, with West Wing quality cinematography and visuals, with your decent commentaries... yeah, happiness.

What's interesting about Studio 60 is that people got really upset/angry about the cancellation, in a way that I've only ever seen with like Firefly, Life (the one starring Damian Lewis), The OA and only a few other shows; it isn't that common a thing. People really liked it who watched it, being my point. One of the reasons it dropped off, I think NBC tried to sell it as a show like SNL and people showed up expecting lots of sketches, and spoiler alert, there rarely are any. If they'd sold it right it would have been bigger, if it'd been made today it would have been *massive* - but sadly none of these things were true. Also, the cast is *insane* - but there's a caveat: many of them are before they got super famous so probably not as expensive as you'd think. Sarah Paulson was basically unknown at this point, the list goes on with examples like that. It's kinda funny that Sarah Paulson's character is on a path to major fame, which foreshadows her own career, but Sarah Paulson herself was in that "about to break out" point too. I do recall that when I first saw the pilot, which was a loonnggg time before the show actually aired, I remember Amanda Peet stared off into the distance a lot in a way that bugged me - it's funny how after the pilot she stops doing it (better direction, or she noticed it too, I assume), but also that it actually bothers me much less now.
