The Queen of Spain's Beard

I told you it might not be suitable for work...still incredibly funny despite the humor not aging so well... "What love is this! You have purposefully dressed in Spanish fashion!" Late 15th Century male fashion in Spain WAS flamboyant. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella who sponsored Christopher Columbus were so rich that people in their court wore expensive imported silks and velvet in strange rare colors to show off their wealth- sort of peacocking...

Oh wow, this is a TREAT. I am here for your Buffy reactions (love them) and did not realise you had started Blackadder. This show is absolutely iconic and one of my all time favourites. I'm sure you've been told by now that series 1 is VERY rough and they hadn't honed in on the format yet. I still like it a lot but it pales to what is to come in the next 3 series. Everything post series 2 is very different and the show gets progressively better. Also, you are correct, that was Jim Broadbent and the Infanta is the legendary Miriam Margolyes!

I love your appreciation for Brian Blessed's larger than life performance and persona. A few years ago a friend and I jumped at the chance to see him on a boat and listen to his anecdotes as we sailed up and down a short stretch of the river Thames. There were 60-80 members of the captive audience and he didn't use a microphone. He boomed "GORDON'S ALIVE" at least ten times during the 90-minute 'cruise'. It was one of the most random experiences, but brilliant none the less.

I don’t know what accent Jim Broadbent was doing but there were times he totally sounded like Forest Gump.

The translator was my favorite this episode as well - absolutely hilarious! ‘Tornado’ is the perfect description of Brian Blessed. With such a big personality, I couldn’t help but think - if anyone was ever born to play the ghost of Christmas present, it’s him. :)

The Earl of Doncaster is a real title but the reference in the show was fictional. The joke is probably a British slight towards the French. Several French kings of the time- Henry III of France who reigned during late Elizabethan times (1570s and 1580s- so 80 years after this show's setting) was allegedly a cross-dresser, had trouble producing an heir, and was surrounded by effeminate courtiers. In the 1600s there were several openly gay French royals including Philippe I who was the bisexual brother of Louis XIV.

Benny Hill in the 1980s had topless scenes on the BBC which were censored in the US and French, Italian and Latin American TV shows permit partial nudity at night after prime time

I think you'd really enjoy I, Claudius. Brian Blessed plays Emperor Augustus

Ben Gilbert

Is that Miriam Margolyes as the Infanta?

THAT WAS JIM BROADBENT???? Thank you for saying something, because I love him but never clocked this. I had to go back and watch his scenes again — what incredible range that man has!
