Look, I like Riley. He’s charming in the right ways. But the thing I just can’t get over is YOU DON’T DATE YOUR STUDENT. She’s 18 and an undergrad. He’s mid-20’s and a TA. Even with the whole “she’s mature for her age and really special,” the age gap is kinda bad when you think about how different the life of a grad student is from that of a freshman. But I get it - she’s amazing, and he’s smitten because, of course - she’s Buffy. BUT SHE’S HIS STUDENT. That is not ok AND it’s against school policy. I was a TA and found out the first week I was teaching that a housemate in the place I just started subletting a room in was in my professor’s class. I immediately told the professor and they made sure he was in a different group headed by a different TA. Lock on my door, password on my computer, and NO talk about class in the house. It’s workplace professionalism, academic integrity, remove-the-power-dynamic 101. Of course, leave it to Joss Whedon to green light a story where all those considerations get thrown out the window….
