I googled it- this was filmed in Newfoundland. There are a lot of deserted towns like that further up from New York and up into Maine and across the border....a lot of the canneries that serviced small fisherman went out of business after WWII leaving these types of areas. In fact if you pass all the celebrity homes (Oprah, Billy Joel, Seinfeld) out in The Hamptons and head out to the East tip of Long Island (120 miles out from Manhattan) into the town of Montauk there are a bunch of beach resorts on the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by piers with fishing boats and just a bunch of t-shirt shops, water sport rentals and old abandoned buildings like we see here... Montauk in Winter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDKNUtQ5LHI Eastport, Maine similar vibe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWt8wt7J4Lo

This episode is so divisive among fans. Either they love it or hate it. Personally I wasn’t a fan when I first saw it but it has grown on me 😅

We know Jame Eagan is Helena's dad. It was revealed in the season one finale. Also, this episode provides such great context for Harmony earlier in the season. She invented Severance - you can see that she has calculations and blueprints in the notebook - which is why she was so insistent on managing the Severed floor and refused the promotion. We have no idea why she created Severance, but she clearly is very dedicated to what she created.

Sniffing ether in your mother's convalescence room while your crazy (aunt?) who stuck you in a cult boarding school lingers in the other rooms...do we know who Sissy is?

Joe- if you took organic chemistry for fun in college during the summer session, like I did.... Ether is an Oxygen Atom sitting in between two carbon atoms like a dumbbell where each carbon is the backbone of an "alkyl group", and acts like a solvent or an anesthetic H-O-H is water- a solvent X-O-H are alcohols- which also acts as a solvent CH3-CH2- O- CH2- CH3 is diethyl ether which lubricates machinery as a liquid and as an inhalant was used for surgery starting in the 1840s- e.g. US Civil War amputations If I recall correctly sinc ethis is my first tme watch...Kier founded Lumon in 1866 right after the Civil War after working in an ether factory where he met his wife and concocted his cult while he was high...I wonder if this is the SAME factory where the Eagens arre from

Actuarial Lurker

And they end credit with "Fire Woman" by The Cult and ethers are flammable and Lumon is a cult...nice touch....

I'm glad to hear that because as I was watching I questioned if I was being too critical. I couldn't help but think of other shows that would have been able to convey everything we got in this episode into a shorter run time. And when the guy was waiting so long outside, I thought at least something interesting was happening inside the house when that poor teacher was waiting for Don Draper. But maybe on a rewatch I will feel differently.

This is my third time through the series but a rewatch has not made this episode grow on me much yet... if anything I like this episode less on rewatch. I was taken away by the cinematography and acting the first time through and the intrigue when I didn't know what was going on carried me a good way into it, but now I don't feel like any of it was worth my time. I never cared who actually invented the severance procedure or how and the reveal that Cobel invented it just makes the world of the show feel smaller. Cobel as a character is interesting when she's playing off characters we actually care about... but getting her backstory far removed from any characters or story we have much investment in doesn't do anything for me. I get that it's setting things up for the next couple episodes but that alone doesn't justify a standalone Cobel episode for me; coming off one of the best episodes of the whole series, this is easily my least favorite.

Devon could have had the doctor who developed both the Severance procedure* and, after turning on Lumon, the reintegration procedure she was in the middle of helping Mark's recovery from, but instead she had to go with the crazypants cult middle manager who used to spy on her family before she went so off the rails Lumon didn't even want her anymore, out of some vague hope she might be able or willing to help. Weird move. (*Just to avoid confusion now that we learn Cobel designed the chip, I'll point out she ain't the brain surgeon.) I want to see the alternate story where Asal explains what she's doing (or even any part of it) so Devon doesn't call Cobel and drive her off, but then I have a feeling if Asal Reghabi got five more minutes of screentime she'd ruin all the mysteries. Well, she's maybe justifiably extremely paranoid about giving any opening for Lumon to catch her. And ether has some potent (hehe) symbolism for the show. Lumon began with selling ether and they're still (supposedly) primarily in medical supplies; it's a cheap and dangerous way to get high, and Lumon's business is ultimately chasing spirits. (The ghost of Kier at least.) And, up to about 1920 (well after Lumon's founding), popular science was heavily into "ether" as a theoretical/spiritual/metaphysical element that explained literally everything about physics that Newton was unable to, and if we've been paying attention, Lumon is still pursuing their own brand of elaborate pseudoscience. (Remember after Helly tries to kill Helena, they discuss her "temper" levels are like that's a medical concern?)

Chikhai Bardo is lovely, melancholic and masterfully directed but Sweet Vitriol will always be my favorite episode. I would kill for the prequel about this town. Hampton, Aunt Cissy and Harmony deserve Emmy awards for this episode. I think the ladies were nominated but I don't think James Le Gros got his due. The accursed history, abuses, resentments, a love story of two lost children, archaic language and brutal religious hierarchy from the perspective of heroic child ether factory workers? I'm in! And yes, Jame Eagan, Helly's dad & current CEO forced Harmony to give him her chip designs and claim them for himself, amongst all his other evil deeds. Harmony Cobel is one of the most layered, complicated characters I've seen in a long time. Bravo, Patricia Arquette, James Le Gros and Jayne Alexander. Just stunning work!

Benjamin Finkel

I think that the way Reghabi reacted to Devon calling Harmony, and the way Patricia Arquette *spat* Reghabi's name out in the car, that there will be some fun history between the two. My prediction is that Cobel brought the theoretical/science-y part of Severance to the table, but Reghabi was the doctor who handled the squishy biological/surgical portions of it. They brought Severance to life together, and then disagreed on how to "raise their baby".

Roland

And while less likely now, my theory is that Outie Burt could have been the manufacturing engineer that built the implant (i.e. from Harmony's designs).

Roland

The opening visuals are incredible. Jessica Lee Gagne isn't returning to Severance as DoP for Season 3 (which will start filming in a month or three), hopefully they have found someone just as talented to inherit her mantle, a very tall order.

Carl Wilson

Yep, what Devon's doing in these episodes is one of my big "huh?" problems with this season

Carl Wilson

Re your intro: Not a spoiler because I genuinely don't know the answer, but on rewatching this season I wonder if there is any connection between the doppelgangers we saw for our data refiners on the ORTBO field trip and the fact that there was a body for Mark to (mis)identify as Gemma, after she was taken.

Roland

Or possibly Outie Burt is involved in the fertility testing program, some kind of Keir Eugenicist?

Suzanne Whyte

It’s my least favourite episode. Season 2 broadened the show and got more experimental with their episodes but this one didn’t work as well for me as last weeks or the ORTBO episode. I don’t want an entire episode of Cobel plus it always annoyed me that Mark collapsed dramatically at the end of episode 6 and then we had two episodes where the show mostly went and focused on other things.

I🖤Kraken

Aw, such a shame. Chikai Bardo was so beautiful. I hope she's a success in feature films.

Carl Wilson

The "tempers" in Lumon also echoes the idea of the "four humors" that was big in western medicine (such as it was) for centuries, from ancient Greece till the Enlightenment.

Carl Wilson

I figured they had Maine in mind - although Newfoundland is really a much more extreme environment.

Carl Wilson

She won an Emmy for cinematography for this season and was nominated for directing Chikai Bardo, so I assume she had lots of opportunities coming her way. I seem to recall her saying she was leaving to try to direct her own films.

Carl Wilson

Alexander is a huge deal - a four-time Oscar nominee and an eight-time Emmy nominee (winning two), as well as a Tony winner.

Carl Wilson

Also "Sweet Vitriol" is an archaic name for ether.

Carl Wilson

I don't think this can be the ether factory where the Egans met because it seems clear the Egans founded this factory and that there was no town there before it, according to Cissy.

Roland

Yep, and we wish her all the best (sob).

Cramdeon1969

Such an interesting episode 🤔🤔

Roland

I'm just caught up with the podcast and the interview with Jessica Lee Gagne is great. She was scared to direct (understandable!) but had a great experience. I'm sure they'll have her direct an episode or two of S3 if schedules align. 🙂

Weird Magic

I LOVE Severance so much, hoping they are able to continue the storyline as they have so far right through to the end (whenever that is)! But I said it immediately after this episode aired to my wife and stand by it to this day - this episode could have been an email. It's not like it wasn't well acted or shot, but the plot went nowhere and didn't provide any new info. With a runtime of 37 minutes there was SO MUCH TIME to flush out an actual story. Nope. They did ether as kids, and Cobel created the severance procedure when she was in little girl academy. Seriously - this could have been an email. I'm the guy that used to put the IMDB ratings on each episode of West Wing, Ms. Maisel, The Americans and a few others, haven't done it for Severance because I wasn't sure if anybody really cared. Ratings always will be very subjective to the viewer, but in general the masses agree - this episode should be skipped (I did not skip it with J&K because I wanted to see their thoughts on it first). The Lost finale, which a lot of people point to as being not well received...it's a 9.1 on IMDB. This episode was a 6.6....six point six! If you did like it, it doesn't mean you're wrong for liking it - it means a lot of people did not. 1x1 - 8.1 1x2 - 8.0 1x3 - 7.7 1x4 - 8.2 1x5 - 7.7 1x6 - 7.9 1x7 - 8.9 1x8 - 8.9 1x9 - 9.7 2x1 - 8.0 2x2 - 8.2 2x3 - 8.5 2x4 - 8.9 2x5 - 8.0 2x6 - 8.3 2x7 - 9.1 2x8 - 6.6 2x9 - ??? 2x10-???

Michael Bennett

I think this is an underrated episode because of where it came in the season. We had Mark collapse from turbo reintegration, then we got a whole episode about Gemma with a ton of backstory while Mark was passed out, then he wakes up, and... we don't see him, Gemma, Devon, or Reghabi at all. Instead, we get a bottle episode about Cobel. A very good bottle episode, but still. I think it's a great episode on its own, but its slow pacing and lack of plot movement at a critical moment in the season really soured its delivery. And that's absolutely fine, to rate an episode how you want based on your expectations at this point and not in isolation.

Youtalkingtome

It really is. You never what to expect week to week

Youtalkingtome

Unfortunately I did not take organic chemistry lol! That is really cool though. I'm willing to bet this is where he started his cult. It did have a certain "ground zero" feel to it

Actuarial Lurker

My counter to this is that the episode is visceral social commentary - a company town that moves on when they can't exploit child labor or the poor- hello Rust Belt - a town full of addicts as a result of corporate greed- Hampton was handing out ether in the coffee shop, the guy in the street was sniffing an ether laden rag- Appalachia and other US regions with meth and opioid addiction problems and seeking to decriminalize THC so the whole country can get high rather than vote and demand political and social change - stealing Intellectual Property of employees making millions or billions from their insights and not sharing revenue or even offering bonuses or advancement in partial payment- look at what college campuses do to the IP their grad students develop, let alone corporations - how Kier's religion is the product of an ether junkie writing down his high musings - is Severance just another way of "tuning out" like being an addict in the late 60s and joining a new age commune? The "sober you" who can't handle life and the "high you" who escapes pain. How many people use alcohol which they don't view as a drug to drown themselves at happy hour to "forget about life for a while" as Billy Joel relates in Piano Man, or a post social media world where "we share a drink they call loneliness because its better than drinking alone" I think this episode shows rather than tells a lot of these messages and masks it behind Cobel's "origin story" and in a way is quite brilliant

Actuarial Lurker

Did Kier have a twin brother who he defeated in the area where they did the ORTBO or was he just high and just projecting the thoughts of his sober and ether-impaired alter egos

Actuarial Lurker

Sort of like the first McDonalds or WalMart before going global...

That Fantastic Mr. Fox reference made me very happy. Also I know you guys have said in the past that Andor is coming, but I just want to plant the seed that it would be an excellent replacement for this show!
