DAMN IT. I was absolutely OBSESSED with this movie when it came out. The acting, the visuals, the SCORE, oh my god, everything. I bought it on VHS. I bought it on DVD. I bought it on Blu-ray. I bought the DIRECTOR'S CUT on Blu-ray. And when I saw this reaction pop up I was so excited and ran to get it so I could watch along... and all I have is the director's cut. I neglected to save my copy of the theatrical version. I might have seen it enough times that I could follow along with the raw reaction and no watch-along copy, but I will resist and wait until I can rent the theatrical version. Or just buy it again. So... I'll be back. I am very annoyed with my past space-saving, Goodwill-donating self.

Actually, this is the "definitive Director's cut." the only one available to rent on Prime.

That'll teach me to assume before I double-check!

I have seen this movie so many times and I still get caught up in it just like the first time. I read the book probably forty years ago and I don't remember loving it. They have taken tremendous liberties with the characters and plot, but I don't care. Natty Bumppo, aka Hawk-eye, has become the more dignified Nathaniel Poe, who is a friend of Chingachkook, not his adopted son. The plot is a lot more twisty in the book. Cora and Alice are half-sisters and sort of swapped, plot-wise. Alice is who Heyward wants to marry. Cora's mother is mixed-race, and Magua offers to marry her at one point. There's no romance with either of the sisters other than Alice & Heyward. Uncas and Cora are the ones killed at the end and Natty/Hawk-eye kills Magua. The movie is better. There was very little character development for the sisters in the novel and obviously, the movie did a great job with Cora. But I was also really impressed by Alice the more I watched it. The script just presents her as weak and fragile, which she is, but the way she changes near the end is moving, especially since there's no actual dialogue for her. She seems to spend most of the movie in shock. But after the showdown in the Huron village she's separated from her sister for the first time and it's like she wakes up. She's looking around at the mountains as they walk as if she hadn't noticed them before. She actually makes eye contact with Uncas for the first time when he tries to rescue her. And she stares right into Magua's eyes without flinching. It's like Magua is seeing her for the first time, too. He's really looking at her. He lowers his knife and beckons her from the edge. I think there's a possibility that he might not have killed her if he'd been allowed to take her and keep going. I am SO glad they changed it to make Chingachgook be the one to kill Magua. Russell Means, another actor without a whole lot of dialogue, did a brilliant job. The look on his face when he came out of the trees in time to see Uncas fall was heartbreaking. I could talk about this movie for days. But that's enough for now.

I really wanna pick up this blu ray because it's beautiful. I feel like it's filled with all sorts of details that we missed
