My favorite movie!

Erin Mileur

The actor who plays Magua Wes Studi is the son-in-law of actor Jack Albertson best known as Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971).

Erin Mileur

Fun Fact actors Wes Studi (Magua) and Maurice Roeves (Col. Munro) because of working on this movie became lifelong friends.

Michelle Taylor

It’s actually an eastern😂🤣 when I worked in Lake George, I would take my lunch break and sit outside Fort William Henry, and enjoy the breeze from the lake.

ScarlettMi

I love the music in this movie so much. It's one of those film scores that just stays in my mind constantly.

Ben Gilbert

The setting is upstate New York, but it was filmed in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina.

Julzy

Daniel Day-Lewis is portraying Hawkeye aka Natty Bumppo.

Julzy

Just fyi, it was Mary McDonnell in Dances with Wolves. Madeleine Stowe was in The Abyss & 12 Monkeys among other things.

ScarlettMi

Madeleine Stowe was not in The Abyss. The actress from The Abyss was Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

ScarlettMi

The background love story between Uncas and Alice is what I remember most about this movie. It's one of my go-to examples of how sometimes the B-plot outshines the main one. I feel the same about The English Patient, although that secondary story isn't as background as this one. There's just all this sad potential to Uncas and Alice that ends up lost. It's tragic, memorable, made up almost entirely of stolen glances and hope, and it's set to a gorgeous score.

Julzy

You are right - I stand corrected! Thanks!

Julzy

I was only half right - I used to say I have a swiss cheese brain like Sam in Quantum Leap. ha ha

Michelle Taylor

The Book: Hawkeye is depicted as a "monkish" figure dedicated to the wilderness and friendship with Chingachgook, not romantic love. Cora falls for Uncas, while Alice is associated with Major Heyward.

I saw this in the theater in 1992, and it has been one of my favorite since then. I have owned a copy of the soundtrack ever since a week after I saw it. -Uncas is played by Eric Schweig. He recently played the bounty hunter in One Battle After Another, who died trying to save a girl from a bunch of killers. -Daniel Day Lewis refused to do any of the running and shooting and reloading scenes until he could run and shoot and reload himself. Dedicated method actor. -Chingachgook's dismantling of Magua at the end of the film was one of the most satisfying take downs on film. Magua was dead the moment he killed Uncas, he just didnt know it yet. -Chingachgook was played by Russell Means, who was a Native American activist (boarding on militant) in his youth. Take a look at his wiki. -Alice was played by Jodhi May, and she most recently played the seer in Game of Thrones who annoyed a young Cersie, as well as the Queen of the doomed kingdom in the first season of the Netflix Witcher show. -The score was done by two different composers as there was creative differences between Michael Mann and the first composer. -Very good catch of Jared Harris. Obviously this was before he got into advertising and worked for Putnim Powell and Lowell...

There’s a whole bunch of brunette actresses from the 80s/90s that can start to get crisscrossed.

Kevin- by the power of Google...the original adapted film version that your grandfather was referring to was from 1936

I like that many of the actors ARE Native Americans or part

Never saw this film but know that it is set in "slightly" upstate NY- as in the Albany area which is 145 miles north of NYC. Many don't realize how huge NY State is- I have done the NYC/Long Island to Toronto drive many times to avoid flying and have a car while up in Canada and its a 420 mile 10 hour drive diagonally across the state to cross up by Niagara Falls/Buffalo- 1.5 hours to get out of NYC and 1.5 hours to get through the Greater Toronto suburbs horrible traffic with 6 hours of steady 65 mph in between and a couple of 30 minute rest stops to loop around Lake Ontario. Its about 7 hours to head straight up I-87 to Montreal to go East of the Lake NY State is basically NYC, Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, Binghamton, Troy, Rochester with a bit of "West Virginia or Alabama in" the miles of endless woods and mountains between these metro areas....

Suzanne Whyte

I always loved this movie and I was tempted to purchase it so I’m glad it won the poll. The story is quite simple but the cinematography and the music really elevates it.

Michelle Taylor

You should watch the documentary Reel Injun. Reel Injun (2009) is a documentary directed by Neil Diamond, Catherine Bainbridge, and Jeremiah Hayes that explores the evolution of Native American stereotypes in Hollywood films. Through clips and interviews, it examines the "noble savage" to "brutal savage" tropes, featuring insights from actors like Clint Eastwood and Adam Beach.

Gentlemen, please react to A Room with a View (1986) - quite possibly my very favorite film ever. 🎥 😊Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Graves, Denholm Elliot, Julian Sands, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench & Simon Callow.

I still say Can tuck ee in my head when I see Kentucky in print. ha ha

Actuarial Lurker

This was very much like the Vietnam War with the Brits walking in formation to drummers and the French and Native Americans in camouflage hidden in the trees fighting with axes slaughtering them...

Actuarial Lurker

I searched it and this was filmed in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC near Asheville and NOT in upstate NY- which is annoying since parts of upstate NY definitely DO look like this, although not by Albany per se...

Kevin-"Not idly do the leaves of Lórien fall"....thought the same thing as those three were tracking

The film did win the Oscar for best sound, its only Oscar nomination, no nominations for cinematography, production design, costumes, makeup, adapted screenplay, directing, or acting for Wes Studi’s performance. Ben Stiller’s Emmy winning 1992 sketch comedy show, The Ben Stiller Show, did a funny commercial based on the film. https://youtu.be/x23uj-vw3Zo?si=kyk0NyiTWyHqPKbA

I absolutely love this movie. Thanks so much for reacting. I would say, though, that I've never interpreted Alice's death as her choosing that instead of being married to Magua. Instead it was choosing to join Uncas because they had an unspoken love for each other, they even show that her body lands beside his as if showing them united in death. So they both sacrificed themselves for each other which is tragically beautiful.

Actuarial Lurker

Nice observation- I couldn't tell that they were next to each other at the bottom of that cliff

Clare Manion

This was a gorgeous movie! Can you imagine seeing it in theaters? It would be magnificent. You’re spot on - there’s so much that The Patriot lifted from this movie, it’s almost embarrassing. And I loved The Patriot when it came out. Rented it so many times. If I had known of this movie at the time…well, I’d probably be able to recite it by now. Agreed, Duncan is the worst. He seems to fit into a particularly 18th/19th century character archetype who inevitably says something along the lines of “I’ve decided we’re a good match, therefore we should get married, no matter what you think about it, because in time you’ll see I’m right.” But he is always, in fact, wrong. It is a shockingly common character type for stories set in this period... Redeemed himself in the end, but still. P.S. Canoeing is indeed a lot of fun! There are lots of lakes around me, so we grew up paddling about here and there in the summer. There’s something very Zen about it :)

Clare Manion

Toward the end, on the cliff — “The other option being married to him forever.”/ “I think he would just kill her.” …oh darlings, there are worse things. And I think she knew that.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, looking back on it you're right. So tragic, they were so close to reaching her

Youtalkingtome

I would love to go on a canoeing trip! It's definitely on my bucket list. If they ever re release this I will be seated

Youtalkingtome

That's a good call. They really did have a silent romance and it was one of the more fascinating elements of the movie

Youtalkingtome

God it's absolutely beautiful there. Imagine hiking around those mountains. I bet it's incredibly hot though

Youtalkingtome

It's one of the most gorgeous looking films I've seen. This was a blast

Youtalkingtome

I thought he looked familiar! I love that two people from this film ended up working with PTA. I wonder if he's a fan of this movie. Jared Harris has one of the most distinct faces. I think I could spot him anywhere

Most of the men in 19th Century "Bronte type" novels seemed like "good catches" since they were too pathetic to be interesting to another woman. Its is easy to be faithful and a steady provider if you are too boring for someone else to have an affair with and too scared to do something controversial that might upset your ability to be a good "drone" in someone else's organization. Just look at Bram Stoker's Dracula- the Keanu Reeves character of Jonathan is so white bread that Mina is ambivalent until he is "awakened" by the 3 she-vampires who make him interesting in bed...

I have come to think she didnt know that anyone else was coming. Usually all 3 were there, and then only Uncas was there. She knew none of the 3 would ever willingly abandon the others while they were alive, so to her probably the other 2 were dead and then all 3 when uncas died.

Annie519

I'm completely the same way! It's my favorite aspect about the film. It's one of those romances, until the end that is that you might not even notice when you first watch the film but when you go back and re-watch it you pick up the small moments between them. And I loved that these two did notice it right away. My favorite detail is, at the end with Alice they really showcase the braid in her hair, she did not have that before the waterfall scene and it looked like Uncas' braid, so that means he had to have done that for her. And they were supposed to have a love scene too, but the actress at the time was 17 and her mother did not give permission for her to do it.

Annie519

That final scene with Alice is my favorite moment in the entire film! It's haunting, beautiful and tragic. For Alice, the entire film she was perceived pretty weak, not like Cora. It wasn't her fault, she was very sheltered, naive and innocent. She clearly didn't know the real world, she even asks Duncan if he's seen the red man, indicating that she hadn't. And she saw them going to her father as an adventure and clearly she got a huge reality check. But, in that moment she is not weak. To me at least she is strong and is no longer going to let Magua control her and won't allow him to. She rather be with Uncas. It's so sad but beautiful at the same time.

Annie519

I'm so glad they didn't do that! Alice with Duncan sounds icky to me, lol.
