I love this movie and I was so stoked when I saw it pop up on the upcoming movies list. The first time i watched it, I saw the dubbed version (I think that was the only version available at my local Blockbuster at the time). At some point later, I saw it with subtitles and was surprised at how much english dialogue there was. "This is a fucking order" caught me off guard! I am aware of some of Hong Kong's history with Britain and remember when Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997 and a lot of filmmakers, including John Woo, left for the US so they could keep working the way they wanted to. So it makes sense that there is a lot of English both written and spoken in a movie that predated that change. The internet tells me that the onscreen deaths totaled 331 which is super high, especially since most of the movies with higher body counts tend to feature large scale battle scenes (like the LOTR movies). So considering that fact, it's wild just how many they packed into this. To me, this movie is a perfect example of how to thread the needle betwwen the ridiculous and the sublime. Some beautiful shots and choreography and yet, Chow Yun-Fat is saved by a baby pissing on his leg. How is this movie so damn awesome?

Since you mentioned Peckinpah John Woo has cited Sam Peckinpah as a major influence on his work.

I got to watch this in the theater a couple months ago, and it was the most amazing kind of sensory overload.

Not many directors pay homage to Peckinpah, I'm glad Woo is able to pay homage and make it completely unique

This is everything I want from an action film. Its absurd yet you buy it and it totally works
