Giles and Spike star in a buddy cop movie this episode and it's incredible lol

dys

This is a fun one, Giles and Spike mess-around indeed :) bit of a risky move to lure Buffy and (armed) Riley to a surprise party by telling them there's a demon... somebody might've gotten crossbowed. There are Buffy comics that continue from the series end, it's been a long time but I don't think I would recommend them.

Buffy is definitely a superhero. She's right up there with Superman and Spidey for me. Just a true hero in every sense of the word. The comics are wild. If you end up reading any (AFTER the show of course bc spoilers), I hope you'll let us in on what you think. The games are old but amusing. Have to play them on an emulator I guess at this point. Most of the actors voice their characters, if I recall.

I hadn't noticed Joyce's absence for much of this season on past watches, I probably chalked it up to Buffy being in college where it makes sense to see less of her mom but there are awkward times where there's some excuse for her not being present for events like Buffy's birthday. I looked it up and from what I can find Kristine Sutherland was in Europe for most of the time this season was filming. I don't think it's a spoiler to say she'll be back, don't worry.

Credit to Anthony Head: he has great chemistry with everyone he pairs up with. He's so good!

Not spoilery at all, thanks! We definitely expected her back at some point.

Love a Giles and Spike match up with Giles chasing Prof Walsh a highlight 😂

One of my favorites; Ethan Rayne just oozes charisma, and I love the scenes with him & Giles. (RIP Robin Sachs who played Ethan. Gone too soon.) You mention the great music; the awesome Christophe Beck (later prolific in films) composed half of S2 including the aching love themes for Buffy & Angel and Giles & Jenny, and all of S3-S4 e.g. the very important score for Hush. Lots of tracks on Youtube including the official score album, and also a channel called Unreleased Buffy Scores, for the curious.

- Fyarl!Giles running like a boogieman after Maggie Walsh is the best moment in the episode; Spike's giddy laughter makes it. And it's rather satisfying after she put Giles on blast earlier in the episode. How dare she! - Love this episode's exploration of Giles's role in the post-librarian years. Him being out of the loop on the Initiative when even Spike knows most of it feels kind of heartbreaking. - Yes, that shirt is terrible. Probably smells like that Sex Panther cologne from Anchorman.

Carl Wilson

You won't have to wait quite as long as with Cold Harbor, don't worry, lol

Carl Wilson

yeah, the comics are a real mixed bag, even the ones that Whedon was involved in

The way Tony Head often helps hold the show together is underrated

I mean, Ethan is going to just end up doing evil things for the military.

I see the shippiest of Giles/Ethan episodes has just sailed into port. :D This is a fun episode, with some nice character pieces and development to go along with the monster of the week vibe. Robin Sachs was always so good as Ethan Rayne, and him and ASH play off one another so well. He was married to Sian Phillips for about 12 years or so as well (Peter O'Toole's former wife), an absolutely brilliant actress in her own right (her performance as Livia in I. Claudius is just wonderful). Sachs also worked with such greats as Sir Derek Jacobi, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Rex Harrison, Dame Judi Dench, Donald Sutherland, and Sigourney Weaver. 61 was far, far too young to have lost such a talent.

Giles chasing down Maggie Walsh is one of my favorite funny moments in the series 😁

This is awesome. I love that they actually have comics

I like this episode, but I do wish the Riley jealousy stuff had been left out of it. I feel like we've already resolved their power dynamic and it would have been better if it was purely Buffy vs The Initiative with Riley acting as an advocate for both. "You were myth-taken" - another classic Buffy line!

So Riley drove Buffy out to Ethan’s motel. How would Buffy have gotten there without Riley? Walk? Is Sunnydale a particularly walkable US city? I feel like Buffy not having a car is not practical now she’s in college. How far is Giles’s apartment from campus? Does she take the bus?

Suzanne Whyte

I don’t really understand the geography of Sunnydale. Maybe they have well-planned pedestrian infrastructure. I’m not American but I remember when I spent a semester in the US I couldn’t even walk from the campus to the supermarket because the only way to get there was via the highway. It’s probably best not to think about the practicalities.

Carl Wilson

I didn't know he'd died! That's such a shame.

Carl Wilson

I never thought the point was Riley being jealous so much as him just continuing to underestimate Buffy because he doesn't understand yet - this is the episode where he realizes the Initiative is not bigger than her, beginning to get a sense of her true power. Which I think is important to the arc of the season.

Carl Wilson

Yeah, these are questions the show has never cared about. Basically Buffy can get anywhere right away unless the plot requires her not to. (And pretty much the same for anyone else, tho they'll usually arrive a few seconds after her just to show that she's the one with powers.)

Carl Wilson

Btw, worth noting the continuity here - the Sunnydale Motor Inn, the dump where Ethan's staying in this episode, is also where Faith lived before the Mayor set her up in nicer digs. Memorably the site of Xander's swift devirginization, among other things.

Paul Komoroski

One of my all-time favorite episodes! Hilarious!
