Once again, the Harriett story line is directly from Kristen Chenoweth's life. Kristen posed in Maxim and this appears to be Sorkin's argument that he wanted to have used to stop her from doing it.

Lot of wish fulfillment apparently in the Matt-Harriet scenes.

This episode was very meta at the time. NBC was already having a fit about the budget of this show and Sorkin read about ABC commissioning a sitcom of the Geico Cavemen and remarked about what a world of next season this was off the air and people were watching that instead. Of course that show lasted less episodes than this one.

Jonathan

Most head scratching sitcom was the 1998 sitcom set during the civil war with the “funny” slaves. The fact that that aired 3 weeks before the network realized it was a bad idea still amazes me

I was too young at the time but I remember reading about the Hitler show. It's called "Heil Honey I'm Home!" The show I remember getting canned after one or two episodes was "Viva Laughlin" a musical show about a casino that had Hugh Jackman involved. I never watched it but I remember it getting slammed for how bad it was.

Did you guys notice the ‘Bartlet For America’ poster on the wall backstage when Simon and Tom are trying to convince Harriet not to do the photo shoot?

Carl Wilson

Apparently that show didn't actually feature slaves? If it's the one I was just looking up it was supposed to be Lincoln's Black butler (an exiled English nobleman, as if there were a lot of Black English noblemen) as the POV character in a White House satire where the premise was something like "What if Lincoln also banged an intern?" But some kind of log line about a sitcom with a Black servant during the Civil War caused protests. Sounds like it was kind of a cockup on all sides.

The Hitler one was British - I watched the one episode that ever aired (it's on YouTube somewhere) and it's kind of a meta-sendup of sitcoms in general. Actually kind of funny. The bad taste is very deliberate, but not surprising it caused a huge backlash.

Jonathan

Yeah that’s the one I never saw it but I remember hearing there were several slavery related jokes.

This is the only Sorkin show I haven’t rewatched to death. Can’t think of a reason why now! Again, how I wish we saw more of this Matthew Perry!

Sarah Paulson killed it in this episode (& series)! Such a great episode! Good riddance Ricky & Ron!

Michael Barrett

I really like this episode, but every time the clock continuity bothers me - especially the end of the episode, where time has gone backwards and they have 6 days, 23 hours, 3 mins and 15 seconds until the start of next week's episode. For a 90min show, that would mean they are still only 2/3rds of the way through *this* week's show.

I remember what a massive disaster that Geico Caveman show was. Yikes.

Youtalkingtome

Seriously, I've never seen Matthew Perry like this. He's really showing range

This is some of the best writing and editing the show has had. Matt was awesome here, he went straight from talking the talk, telling Harriet not to do the shoot out of vengeance, to walking the walk with Ricky and Ron. I love when a character's empathy is the solution to a problem. It's a good example for us to follow. "You don't want to, though" was the killer line. The only major regret I have was from doing something I didn't want to do, but I had convinced myself I should do. I wish I'd talked to my own Tom, Simon, and Matt and let them talk me out of it.
