I was surprised you guys hadn't seen this when it was in the poll

Martin McDonagh never misses!! Top tier film.

Funnily enough, I was already a fan of Martin McDonagh as a playwright before seeing any of his films. If you ever get the chance to read “The Pillowman” or see it performed, I definitely recommend it - FANTASTIC play. Apparently, he was never very interested in theatre and only became a playwright because he couldn’t afford to break into film. Ironically, the renown that he garnered in the theatre world was what eventually enabled him to get funding for his first short film (“Six Shooter” starring Brendan Gleeson, highly recommend), and then his first feature (In Bruges). This is easily my personal favourite of his films, though I really enjoyed how much Banshees harkened back to his early theatre work. His next film, “Wild Horse Nine” is coming later this year and stars Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, and John Malkovich. I’ve been avoiding the trailers because if he’s done it, I already know I’m gonna watch it anyways.

farrell/mcdonagh/gleeson are a can't miss combo imo especially when it's set in ireland (i'm less fond of mcdonagh's work outside of it). i still think farrell was robbed of an oscar nom here. one of my favourite performances from him.

At 34:30 The sin of despair is believing that God could never forgive you, but worse is the sin of "putting limits on Grace" that you are so bad that He CAN'T forgive you" and finally worse yet is believing that you don't NEED to be forgiven....

So glad you watched this! Martin McDonagh started his career as a playwright, where he was famous for his *extremely* dark (and often very bloody) comedies. He won a Tony for his work in the early 2000s. One of my favorite modern playwrights - his dialogue is amazing. Then his first move to Hollywood was a short film called Six Shooter which won an Oscar. In Bruges was next, and IMO is criminally underwatched. This film feels like one of his plays for sure.

Aha, another Pillowman Enjoyer! My BFA directing project was a 1-hour version of The Lieutenant of Inishmore - some of the most fun I've ever had working on a show.

this is my third watch now and it still hits just as hard as the first time!

Daniel Andersen

It's not hyperbole to say that this is one of the best dark comedies there is

I think McDonagh is quite a flawed filmmaker (and playwright), but this film, the short film Six Shooter, and his play The Pillowman are all very good on the whole, although with some of his flaws front and centre in each case. Notably his tendency towards edgy 'un-PC' shock tactics for humour, which mostly works here although a couple of Ray's lines are a bit too much for me, but it really undermined Banshees of Inisherin for me (as did McDonagh's condescending outsider view of rural Ireland). This film, though. Really impressively economical script, great performances, and the city of Bruges itself elevates it a lot as well. I think McDonagh's tonal preferences work best here.

An almost perfect dark script- to me its kind of a blend of Pulp Fiction and No Country for Old Men...in the depiction of self-analyzing criminals who at times don't take themselves too seriously and at other times are way TOO serious I absolutely HATED, after 2.5 watches, The Big Lebowski....this here is different

I wish there had been more of a role for Ciarin Hinds...my wife and I saw him in the 2007 Broadway play "The Seafarer" by Conor McPherson and he was great as the mysterious visitor As my Irish wife would say- if an Irish play ends with at least one character alive- even if he is insane or in prison or has lost his family its a "comedy"....so I would call that Faustian tale an Irish comedy just like this film was

Youtalkingtome

That really makes sense in context of the film here.

Youtalkingtome

It was always on the list of films to see. It's a very long list. This channel is a great way to check off titles!

Youtalkingtome

The ones on the link look less insane than the one in the film. Thanks!

The dog in the film looked like it had mange on his face

Youtalkingtome

There are definitely elements of his dialogue that feel theatrical.

Youtalkingtome

He must have still been a relative unknown at this point, because he is a terrific character actor.

Terry Cooper

Seeing you enjoyed this please watch a film called "Sexy Beast" Where we see an even bigger psychopath than Rafe Fines" from a more surprising actor.

Belgium is a hugely underrated holiday destination. We used to to all the time to the flanders coast(Blankenberge mainly) when I was a kid but I went around Europe years ago with a couple of friends' bands as the merch guy and it ruled going again. Leuven and Ghent especially.

Did you recognise Clemence Poesy from Harry Potter? Fleur Delacour from Goblet of Fire.
