never saw this...the opening scene is a classic

I was terrible at pitching. Hated it. I just wanted to write. My agents would try to help. Only made it worse. They were a movie to themselves. Had an office on Wilshire and Doheny in BH. The building had Versace HQ, Imagine Entertainment, all sorts of huge companies. And I kid you not, the parking garage of this place was lined with millions of dollars of art. I'd park my crappy Sentra with the entire passenger side bashed in next to Bentleys and Ferraris (one with a glass hood, I recall) in front of giant paintings. I actually loved showing up to meetings with my producers in that car. It embarrassed them. Eff 'em. I also loved, say, having a meeting at the Newsroom, an entirely industry restaurant back in the 90s, and asking the waiter if I could just get a grilled cheese sandwich. The looks on faces at me was such a joy, like I was an alien. No wonder I didn't last. ☮️🥸🤣

Buck Rogers was a space hero. Buck Owens was a country singer. THAT was Buck Henry. ;) Bonnie (Cynthia Stevenson) is amazing in Billy Crystal's movie Forget Paris.

First off, you guys are such great reactors for this movie because you recognized virtually everyone. Secondly......can we just say how frickin' great Dean Stockwell is in this??!!! Man oh man, we just took that guy for granted. What a detailed, hilarious performance!

Ok, just finished. Fantastic reaction! DEFINITELY do more Altman! This was definitely "the return of Altman"......and then the next year was "Short Cuts" which was also fantastic, huge amazing cast, well worth watching. 1992......I remember it well. I remember expecting both The Player and Reservoir Dogs (and Harvey Keitel) to dominate the Oscars. I figured Harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant was a shoo in for Best Actor (between that and Reservoir Dogs, it felt like "the return of Harvey" as well as Altman!). I figured Tarantino would at least get nominated for his script. And I just figured The Player would get Best Picture. Turned out none were even nominated!!!! Totally snubbed! PS: Now you know why no major studios funded this movie, something you noticed in the opening credits!

I love when a long one-shot exists for a strong reason more than just a flex for the cast and crew. This was a beautifully complex setup to show just how quickly Griffen’s day moves. It’s a masterpiece.

I bet you were the stuff of legend around the studio, though!

I wanted to purchase Short Cuts but it’s only on DVD.

The Long Goodbye is one of the best Altman films. Elliot Gould is my favorite Philip Marlowe, even over Humphrey Bogart. Another favorite Altman film is his last, A Prairie Home Companion, about the fictional last show of the popular radio show. It has all the things that made the show distinctive, songs humor, fake commercials, and storytelling. Altman must have been aware that he didn’t have much time left and he made a movie about death and endings. Even Altman’s more obscure film are good.

I haven't seen either one! I would love to check those out

This film was a big influence on Seth Rogen’s Apple TV series The Studio. Other satirical “behind the scenes” of Hollywood films that are good watches, 1987’ Hollywood Shuffle, 1989’s The Big Picture, 2006’s For Your Consideration and 2023’s American Fiction which is a satire of the literary world and Hollywood. D'Onofrio and Greta Scacchi were married at the time of filming. They have a daughter, Leila George, who is an actress.

My favorite out-of-the-way Altman recommendation is Cookie's Fortune (1999). Great little movie with Glenn Close, Charles S. Dutton and one of the last roles for Patricia Neal. Not distinctively "Altmanesque" but very enjoyable. Greta Scacchi here reminds me of a movie you should absolutely see, Presumed Innocent (1990) with Harrison Ford, Bonnie Bedelia, Scacchi and a superb Raul Julia.

I love Cookie's Fortune! It was one of the first movies I thought about buying for this channel but it's only available on DVD.

I really wanna watch The Studio, I hear it's incredible
