We find ourselves having to make too many of these posts, and we have lost another wonderful performer in Anthony Head. He delighted us with his villainous turn in Ted Lasso, and continues to brighten our weeks as we explore his contributions to the iconic Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hero or villain, Anthony brought his talent and charm into our lives over his illustrious career. Giles felt like a father figure to the young cast of Buffy as well as generations of audience members of that beloved show. As new fans of Buffy, this truly is a profound loss.

May he rest in peace. I just heard the news, and it's very sad that he has passed. He was an incredible actor, and I've loved him in everything I've seen him in.

This is the third major cast member the Buffy series has lost in the last year. Giles was my favorite character. He brought such gravitas to the whole series.

Growing up watching Buffy in the 90s, Giles really did feel like a beloved father-figure. He will be sorely missed.

Bean's friend

Giles was one of my favorite characters in Buffy, and I couldn't imagine anyone else embodying the role like he did. I believe I heard that his wife only recently passed, but I wish all comfort to his remaining family and friends. He will be remembered.

I've been devastated seeing all the tributes online. He showed a generation that caring was strength and books were sexy. He showed us what mature wisdom could be. And apparently he was as lovely in real life as we all thought and wished he was, which is rare these days. A true gentleman. He's sorely missed.

It has been rough, for sure. I don't know why but there have been multiple series that I adored that lost multiple cast members in a short period of time. The others being The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Homicide: Life on the Street. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say. It just sucks.

Yes, his wife Sarah passed earlier this year. I suspect heartbreak contributed--how much or how little, no idea--to his death. My heart hurts especially for their two daughters Daisy and Emily: to lose both parents and in such a short span.

March 10, 1997, I watched this quirky little WB show when it premiered, and fell in love with a unique series and wonderful cast. What extraordinary influence it's had, not least the beloved Rupert Giles in Tony Head's great performance... In my library career, I've admired him so much; happily our fictional idols will always be with us. Thank you Tony 💜 (American Libraries magazine with Tony & Sarah: https://imgur.com/a/mnJNKmX )

The podcast Buffering the vampire slayer has been using this silly little jingle they made for years now. Today is as good a tike as any to share it with everyone 💔 https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTBfCXspb/

Devastating. Three Scoobies in the last year is just unbelievably sad. 😢

The Inedible Mattman

Babylon 5 is another that list half their main cast in a decade of time. Very sad!

Cosmic Slice

He will always be the romantic lead in the Taster's Choice commercials and Uther Pendragon in Merlin to me. Such a loss.

His Rupert was the perfect foil in Ted Lasso...

acidnova

I still haven't seen Ted Lasso but I had no idea his character's name was also Rupert. So He was Rupert Giles on Buffy and a Rupert on Ted Lasso! Interestin!

Genuinely gutted to hear this. He was perfect as Giles, awesome in everything I saw him in and seemed a lovely man off screen as well as on. My daughter and I rewatched some of our favourite Giles episodes tonight with tea and Jaffa cakes in tribute (you'll get that reference later).

I liked Bret Goldstein's post, he basically said that ASH played the worst person ever and it was a testament to his acting ability because he was the best person. Also, apparently he and his partner worked with a donkey rescue and I think that's really fun and lovely.

this is so sad. he was a great actor and a good man. he also has at least one musical album btw, if you havent seen that its worth checking out. so many people die closely after their long term partners. his partner of like 40 years died a few months ago. which makes me feel extra bad for his daughters who have lost both parents this year. that must be so horrible.

Oh man those kids made some bangers on that show.

For men in particular, partner loss is a huge health risk.

Gutted. He wasn't young - this is nothing like Michelle Trachtenberg dying - but he was probably my favourite performer on the show, and he wasn't that old either (72 is a decade younger than my still quite healthy and active mom). I loved something Charisma Carpenter wrote, that even though she didn't know him as well as other cast members, she fondly remembered that he had a hippie/punk vibe that was totally unlike Giles, in both how he dressed off-screen and acted. One day when she had ants in her trailer, and wanted Raid to get rid of them, Tony said, "Have you tried asking the ants to leave?" Which is the kind of flaky actor thing I'd never expect from ASH based on his characters (except maybe Frank N Furter and the coffee commercial guy). But I'm fond of those flaky actor things (from a distance) and the fact that he was like that makes me even more impressed with his acting skills honestly. Giles in the future maybe gets to show a bit more of that side. As others have said: It's hard to overstate the importance of the father-figure role he brings to the Buffy gang, but beyond that obvious element, the way he brought adult ambiguity to the show's morality (both willingly and unwillingly, when they found out about Ripper), his transition from quite dogmatic Watcher to someone whose loyalty to Buffy revealed to him the hollowness of the Council, and his ability to love the gang while also arching a more mature person's eyebrow... That was all super important to me as someone who was about your ages when the original series was on. He provided a voice that was neither teenaged nor fearful/conservative adult (like most of the parents and teachers). Joyce is getting there but Giles is the key POV for the slayer-supporting adult viewer. We can talk more about whether all his post-high-school plots do him justice (including to a certain degree in this season) as we go along, but an indispensable core element of the show from episode 1.

I love the Giles jingle SO MUCH. Hot Dad! Glass-es!

I believe his character in Ted Lasso more or less had to be named Rupert in reference to a certain real Rupert. Rupert Notmurdoch, I like to call him. But a nice coincidence with Rupert Giles.
