I just said, "oh hell yeah!" outloud to myself after seeing the notification in my emails. Can't wait to watch your reaction to it a bit later-- what a gem!

LET'S GOOOOO 🔥💜

THE best Cinderella adaptation, bar none. Everyone is perfect in their role, especially Angelica Huston, and I love how they expanded every character's motivation and personality. Plus the production design is soo gorgeous.

Youtalkingtome

Angelica Houston chews the scenery like an absolute legend!

Erin Mileur

I love that Leonardo Da Vinci is this versions fairy godmother.

Pam Nail

One of my favorite versions of the Cinderella trope (along with season 4 of Bridgerton). A couple of noteworthy cast members I only noticed on this rewatch. The great great granddaughter who bookends the story is played by legendary French actress Jeanne Moreau. And Monsieur Le Pieu, the slimy man who "buys" Danielle, is played by Richard O'Brien, who wrote The Rocky Horror Show and co-wrote the movie adaptation. I always get choked up at the Mona Lisa reveal, which is dumb but I can't help it. :P Having DaVinci be the fairy godmother in this is rather brilliant.

Cristy

I am SO excited, what a great movie week this has been so far! Thanks, Kate.

I have been waiting for this one! My absolute favorite version of Cinderella, perfect casting all around and manages to remove the magic without losing any sense of fantasy. The scene carrying the prince and Marguerite’s “there was a bee” are peak. My second favorite version is 1997s Roger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, hope you give that one a watch too!

Clare Manion

I love this movie! It's such a fun variation on the Cinderella story. (Thank you Kate!) I'm glad you guys had a good time with it, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of your little revenge plots (Spit in their food!/This is when she poisons them, right?) lol. Yes, I would definitely categorize this one as a rom-com. But like you guys were saying, everybody does such a great job balancing the aspects of the characters - they feel like fuller human beings instead of flat types, which makes the story so much richer. Also, having Da Vinci as essentially the fairy godmother is an inspired choice. Sounds insane on paper, I'm sure, but totally works!

Dannielle

For most of my childhood/teen years if you asked me what my favourite movie was I would have said this movie.

Ari

Oh, I've been waiting for this one since I first saw it on your list! My favorite Cinderella story! Glad you enjoyed it.

Drew Barrymore has said she's on hiatus from acting these days, the last thing I saw her star in was the delightful Santa Clarita Diet. Her chemistry with Timothy Olyphant was fantastic and the rest of the cast was great too (including Skyler Gisondo, basically launched his career), but unfortunately it fell victim to Netflix's cancellation whims, ending on a huge cliffhanger. Still totally worth watching. You've seen Melanie Lynskey (the nicer stepsister) on the channel in But I'm a Cheerleader. She was also in the first season of The Last of Us which I think at least one of you mentioned having seen. Timothy West (the king) looks and sounds an awful lot like Richard Harris, I really thought that was him for a minute. RIP to both. The Mona Lisa does look about actual size here, it's just that in the Louvre it's on this big wall with nothing else around it and most paintings that get that kind of treatment are much larger.

I have an enormous love for the trailer for this movie. The one-two music punch of Loreena McKennitt's The Mummers' Dance and Robert Miles' Fable (Message Version) had such a hold on me. Not to mention Drew in that dress saying "just breathe". A while later I still loved that Fable song and I was able to figure out what it was called and who sang it thanks to the internet. It became the very first thing I ever downloaded via methods that Metallica wouldn't approve of. You guys not knowing Melanie Lynskey (Jacqueline) is both super surprising and kind of exciting, because that means you have a whole lot of excellent movies and shows in your future. You have seen her in But I'm a Cheerleader, but there's so many others. I love the complexity of Anjelica Huston's "wicked stepmother" character in this. They don't make her a non-villain, but they make her a human villain. There was the potential for her to not go down this path of cruelty, but she made a choice to be that way and to direct all her misery at an innocent child. It makes her villainy worse than if she were just a one-dimensional villain. This is not in rom-com territory for me. I'd say it's a romance. Sometimes that line gets blurry, but in this instance I'd say it stays on the romantic drama side of the street.

You're very welcome! So glad everyone was excited for this one... it's my favorite Cinderella story, too!

acidnova

I could have sworn that they referenced Heavenly Creatures on the channel before but I have no clue what video they would have said that in. If they've never seen it, then they certainly should!

acidnova

The funniest thing about the Mona Lisa too, is that on the wall opposite is an absolutely ginormous painting that takes up the whole wall. Downright comical in a way. And of course there was a massive crowd in front of the Mona Lisa and a million phones up. I of course, took my own photo, but I did try to actually take a moment and LOOK at the painting while I could, although, with so many people, you feel like you're only allowed a few moments before you need to move aside to let other people get up close. It is lovely to see in person, but the popularity does make the experience overwhelming.

acidnova

"I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door!"

fire12wife

Melanie Lynskey was also on Two and a Half Men! She was the crazy neighbor (Rose), stalking Charlie Sheen! She's also married to Jason Ritter in real life... he's the son of the late, great, John Ritter!

Cristy

To have the guys react to Bridgerton some day would be so good, S4 is my fave.

vala p

They have that cute celebrity couple factor that makes you root for them.

fire12wife

Drew Barrymore has her own talk show that she started in 2020, during COVID! She's done so well, and it's giving her time with her daughters, Olive and Frankie!

Suzanne Whyte

I will always advocate for a Santa Clarita Diet reaction. It’s not that long, it’s got a great cast and it’s a unique sitcom. Plus it’s very funny and although it has a dedicated fan base there aren’t many reactions to it.

Chemical Em

the costumes in this movie go hard aswell; i love this new iteration of the glass slipper it's so gorgeous and the dress she wears to the ball really add to the magic of this fantasy

Cristy

Kevin, Marguerite is played by Megan Dodd who was in For All Mankind as Andrea Walters. That might be where you've seen her. Melanie Lynskey (Jacqueline) is a NZ actor who's in Yellow Jackets and The Last Of Us amongst many other things. Dougray Scott has the best hair in this movie.

Erica

I can't wait to see how you guys liked the movie! (haven't started it yet) I remember when kevin first watched Cinderella, I commented on the youtube video that this is my all time favorite cinderella adaptation, and some other commenter apparently hates this movie so much that they commented something to the effect of "no f'ing way, never" (or something similar). I kind of want to make fun of them, but there's definitely books and movies i feel that way about, so i get it. still, love this movie, love drew barrymore, love melanie lynskey and angelica huston, all around great cast

Lola Lirola

I love this golden era where all of us girls grew up with amazing commentary on socioeconomic issues and activism folded into our fairytales and romcoms. And the boys thought it was all just frivolous glitter. How are we surprised that women are way more liberal than men today!? Boys just missed out on the feisty marxist romcoms!

Seth Walker

This is such a delightful adaptation of the Cinderella mythology. Hands down one of my favorite Drew Barrymore performances and Angelica Houston is fantastic as always. Probably her second most iconic performance behind Morticia Addams.

seth e.

imagine being the person who suggested that 😂

seth e.

I remember as a young girl that this version of a stepmother felt very true to life in the sense that she had a mother who was "hard on her" and so she is even harder on her daughters, even though it's only ever yielded an illusion of control and makes it impossible for real love to thrive

Stephanie Bedworth

The guy who played her dad in the beginning, you saw him in that Whoopi Goldberg movie you watched a while back called Jumpin Jack Flash. He was one of the good spies who wound up getting shot.

acidnova

While we never saw what Morticia would be like as a step mother, we know she would have been a good one to Cinderella. I know this isn't a thread about the 90s Addams Family but I just have to give a shout out to how amazing Angelica Houston and Raul Julia were in that iteration.

acidnova

Your mistake was commenting on youtube lol (I say this as someone who has commented on plenty of youtube videos, hehe)

Erin Mileur

Since you mentioned that Drew Barrymore comes from a storied acting family you might want to check out Rasputin and the Empress (1932). The only film to feature all three Barrymore siblings Lionel (Drew's great-uncle), John (Drew's grandfather), and Ethel (Drew's great-aunt). It's a really interesting movie with Lionel Barrymore (Mr Potter from Its A Wonderful Life) as Rasputin and he gives a gleefully insane performance.

fire12wife

You're welcome! My next two movies are Pete's Dragon (1977), and Mystic Pizza (1988)... after that is Turner & Hooch (1989)! Love having these movies sprinkled in together, it gives me something to look forward to!

fire12wife

Melanie also played Charlie Sheen's stalker on 'Two and a Half Men'!

Mathilde

I'll support you on this one, such a hilarious show and for once, one that portrays a healthy couple! Timothy Olyphant is adorable as the unhinged but incredibly supportive husband. 😁

Gail Hislop

Such an odd assumption of you both that the stepmother had poisoned her husband!! Other than her seeming unimpressed with Danielle, she had shown no sign of being evil at that point or of not loving her husband. The film was filmed in the Dordogne region of France with many historic chateau being used for location

Erica

Just remembered that Richatd O'Brien, the actor who played the gross guy danielle was sold to, Pierre le Pieu, also played Riff Raff in the rocky horror picture show! And since you mentioned drew barrymore coming from a long line of Hollywood actors, i had to share her family tree from one of my favorite YouTube channels, UsefulCharts. Her family has been acting since the late 1700s, before they even came to the us! Fascinating stuff https://youtu.be/wrnwTDoVG5M?is=b_RgSxIBJG2iC5X
