yet another example of my mom making choices other parents might question working out well: i wanted to see this, she didn’t. she and my friend’s mom dropped the two of us at the theater and bought us tickets to see it on our own. we were 10. i loved it. i think robin williams was intentionally left out of the opening credits. he was a famous comedic actor. i think if people saw his name at the beginning, (a) they may be distracted from the story looking for him, and (b) it may have interfered with the tone they were trying to create (if the audience was expecting something overtly funny). just a guess, but i think if that was the strategy it pays off. when he shows up, we’re a little thrown - wait, is that mork from ork? - but by the time we confirm yes, it is, he’s already doing something that’s very different.

Robin was not in the credits because they were afraid people would think it was a comedy. So he agreed to be non credited which considering his stature compared to Branagh's at the time was a very generous move.

Oh my goodness. This movie today, Ever After yesterday, I must have been very good and Christmas came early this year

Glad you enjoyed it! 😀 Robin Williams went unbilled in the opening credits at his own behest so as to not give audiences a reason to expect a comedy (yes he already had several dramatic roles prior, with Awakenings the year before, and The Fisher King came just four weeks later), but it was his call. It looks like the B&W scenes were shot that way (a case could be made that they look better than the present setting) but they weren’t, lol! Test audiences apparently were getting confused in regards to the timelines (not sure how, but here we are) so the decision was made to drain the color out of the 1940’s era after the fact. This didn’t set well with lighting and costume, as they stated they would have made other choices had they known; again, I think those scenes look fantastic. And I love seeing the clues I missed, in large part due to the clever screenplay, but the clues are indeed there, upon retrospect. The film topped the box office over Labor Day weekend, as well as the next weekend, in 1991, and made over $38million during its initial run. A very acceptable gross in the early 90’s for a modest budget ($15million). Did well on home video too, apparently. Thanks for a great reaction. 😎

Joe- you need to watch the BBC series I Claudius from 1976 with Jacobi in the lead role It has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating and considered a classic

Lola Lirola

Omg, yes! An absolute classic. We had the VHS box set and I swear my entire family watched it once a year when we were kids. So good.

Ben Gilbert

I saw this when it came out on VHS in the 90s. I didn't know who either of the stars were.

Sammy Fan

YES! That would be an excellent next series.

Love this! Its been my You-havent-seen-this?-we're-watching-it-right-now movie for a couple of decades.

Youtalkingtome

He's such a great actor, I would love to check that out

Youtalkingtome

It was a great call honestly. I'm glad that he was able to headline films like Insomnia and One Hour Photo, later in his career
