The word Samurai is both singular and collective - the ambiguity of the title is intentional and clever. FWIW I think he's an amalgam of several real people, I think some of the English-speaking side characters are references to the people who he is based on. Also Bagley's line about hating his own people I don't think he's being racist per se, though he probably is, I think by your own people he means more US military, just something about him suggests to me that's what he means, in a we're above other people sense. Also Cruise' character in Tropic Thunder was Cruise' idea, he's talked about it before - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa-ch8H_5DE&t=56s - this movie is kind of a big deal in Japan fwiw, IIRC it won a bunch of awards there.

God, this movie is beautiful. Everything about it. From the score to the story, and especially the cinematography. To paraphrase David Lean; Every frame of this movie is a painting.
