Can't wait to watch this after work! Almost done w s4!

Lola Lirola

I'm just starting to watch and I was jolted by seeing Amber Benson (Tara) in silhouette at Giles' door, because I remember how everyone said she was "the fat one" in the cast. Man, the '90s were nasty.

Chris

"Power of the slayer in all who've wield it, last to ancient first we invoke thee, grant us thy domain and primal strength" is how I say grace at dinner if asked.

HereBeMeghan

I am SO excited for you to watch the finale next week. And I will restrain myself and not say a single thing more than that. :)

Leah W.

I'd recommend a pencil and paper to take notes for the next episode, but I won't explain why lol

Kevin L

Oh man, I hope *everyone* didn't say that! I remember at the time that a lot of fans disparaged S4, for several reasons -- partly because S3 was so strong, partly because many folks really hated Riley (rather unfairly, I think now; both actor and character are much better than we gave credit for). Initiative storyline isn't to everyone's liking, certainly. Tara's one of the best parts of S4, a good addition to the show.

Christopher simeon

Each of the Scoobies gave buffy support with that spell. Willow has the magical power but she lacks knowledge and experience which is what Giles brings with his watcher knowledge. He and Xander lack strength which is what Buffy brings and Xander brings the Human part that keeps them from becoming too overwhelmed with power.

Kevin L

No spoilers, just a comment: Next week, if you can manage it, you might want to set aside time to watch the finale twice.

Lola Lirola

Tara is so great! But we were in the middle of the heroin chic thing, and she got regularly roasted for her (nonexistent) weight in magazines and in the fandom. Obviously it wasn't *everyone*, but the thing is, I do remember believing she was "fat" back then, and when I look now, I'm amazed at how normal, actually kinda thin, she is! It's like when Renee Zellwegger did Bridget Jones and everyone talked about her weight gain almost like she gained 3 tonnes. But she looked perfectly normal! 😩 Anyway, onto Riley, that is another of the surprises of this rewatch, for sure. I remember back in the day, I thought he was the blandest, most boring, most white-bread person, and I was itching for Buffy to get rid of him... And now I think that's one of the emotionally healthiest men she's ever known! He is loyal, upstanding, when he feels bad, he says it quickly and maturely so it can be discussed, he's nice to his parents, he has (well, had) a stable job in college... And the writers *almost* make it work. It's just that when Angel comes back for half an episode, it sizzles so much and it's so much funner! Poor Riley. Narratively, it's so boring to have good stable relationships in long shows! 😅

Lola Lirola

Same, same! Another of the great episodes, and that's all I'll say!

Jeff

I'll just echo what others are saying about next week's season finale. Unexpectedly brilliant.

Pam Nail

- Joss Whedon neither wrote nor directed this (though I'm sure he did his usual final pass/rewrite before shooting), but I assume the Initiative in general was at least partly his idea. And that he felt like tinkering with it a bit more, because yeah, the similarities to Cabin in the Woods are inescapable. - That is the same actress playing Maggie Walsh. - I don't think the Scoobies are that dumb for believing Spike's manipulation. They've been drifting apart for months and he's very observant -- he's been playing with them all season and there's been a lot to play with. - To be fair to Spike, Adam was incredibly vague with what he wanted and only gave the "where" once Spike had accomplished the "how." - I love that the gang (and the Initiative) knows about Adam's power source because of Jonathan; he figured that out in "Superstar." - Combo!Buffy was such a cool choice and a great way to reinforce how valuable they all are to each other, and especially to Buffy. Willow = Spirit, Xander = Heart, Giles = Mind. I get that, logically, it would have made sense to have Tara there, for as much magic mojo as possible. But it was symbolically important to have our core four accomplish this. - Can't wait for next week! One of the best episodes of the show.

GemmaBeeBee

I always love the mention of Sineya in the spell. It’s so blink and you’ll miss it but it’s so important!

jimmy2k4o .

The Matrix-inspired sequence during the final battle with Adam in "Primeval" wasn’t just a cheap, trend-chasing nod to a popular film of the era; it was the logical, narrative result of the Enjoining Spell. Rather than a pop-culture gimmick, this fight represents a complete, unified synergy of the Scooby Gang's core strengths, with Buffy acting as the physical vessel for their combined essence: Giles (The Mind): Provided the ancient occult knowledge and the specific spell required to initiate the union. Willow (The Spirit): Supplied the immense magical energy needed to channel and manifest those reality-bending powers. Xander (The Heart): Brought the tactical imagination—including the concept of utilizing Matrix-style physical tricks. Buffy (The Hand): Acted as the focus, perfectly executing their combined strength, intellect, and power. It is the ultimate thematic culmination of their friendship, literally turning the four of them into a single, unstoppable force.

Claire Eyles

Translation of Buffy's 'Sumerian' speech in the enjoining spell. :) We are heart We are mind We are spirit From the raging storm We bring the power of the Primeval One Boil the air

Claire Eyles

I remember that. I was a lurker in the fandom, never participated but I did see the horrible things that were being said about Tara as a character, and Amber Benson as an actress. Sadly it did come out later that Amber had actually been on the boards at the time that stuff was being said, and it drove her away from interacting with the fandom online. She did clap back at some point though, reminding people that her height and weight was perfectly healthy and normal for her age at the time.

Claire Eyles

Because it always bears repeating, ye gods I adore Anya.

Gail Hislop

Wondering if you guys have considered doing Whedon’s Firefly and the Serenity movie, being that it’s only 14 episodes ?

Erica

I know a lot of people are saying it, but next week's episode is DENSE. i cant say what is or is not important, but there's a lot there regardless. Id try to pay as close attention as you can. A fun fact about season 4: this was the first time in the show's history where the writers new in advance that they weren't getting canceled at the end of the season. So while they wrote the first 3 seasons in a way that would feel okay as an ending, even if you were disappointed and wanted more, they were able to do more with this season's finale. Or onpx orsber Qnja

Erica

A slayer megazord, if you will 😂

Erica

I only JUST this week realized that Chiwetel Ejiofor is in serenity!

Erica

Spike (and anya) have taken up cordelia's mantle of truth-teller, the one who says the true thing, regardless of if it's the nice thing. "tact is just not saying true stuff. I'll pass"

ScarlettMi

Spike didn't just come up with stuff to divide them. Spike pointed out all the insecurities they already had.

EricG

Sorry if I missed this in a previous discussion, but any thoughts on watching Angel?

Jeff

Kevin, your comments were hysterical this week! "Looks like the White House lawn on Trump's birthday" killed me!

Daniel Lydford

I'm so glad we are past the initiative storyline. It's my least favourite season storyline in the series.

Roland

The TLDR is that Angel is on the list, their rewatch almost certainly will overlap with the later season(s) of Buffy.

Carl Wilson

a) I assume the Initiative/Adam storyline might have gone differently if Whedon were around more this season rather than mainly getting Angel the series going, but this ep addressed directly things that were wrong with the season (especially the second half) - getting so far from the "primeval forces" the show is really about, and losing the chemistry of the core group (though that part is very first-year-of-college, as Willow says here). The spell was a symbolic way to restore both. Mostly I am just glad the whole Adam thing is over, as it never gave me much reason to care. b) One more time: Spike wasn't "playing Yoko" last week. As Spike said, "When they broke up, everyone blamed Yoko, but the fact is, the group split itself apart." He was making the Scoobies think the others were looking down at them over external factors - Tara and witchcraft for Willow, the army for Xander, and whatever else - the way Yoko and other outside forces got blamed for problems that were actually internal to the Beatles. That scapegoating was the "Yoko Factor." (This message brought to you by People for the Ethical Treatment of Yoko Ono.)

Joseph Irizarry

Love the "I'm a lonely little Slayer On A Hellmouth" piano music when Buffy gets out the memories

Joseph Irizarry

Adios, The Initiative. The season finale is very unusual

Jamie Morgan

Yeah, that is absolutely insane. Amber is GORGEOUS.

Jamie Morgan

That made me spit coffee everywhere!

Lola Lirola

Yes, and it's also a great clever way to lampshade any faults in the show! They always do the "meta" thing better than most shows: the little callback to the major, acknowledging the villain this season wasn't that great, the way spike points out so many of the "if this was real life, these need to have some conversations" parts... They always do that really well. Now I'm wondering if it's because this was one of the first shows to have an online fandom and forums and that kind of stuff, so the writers had the audience pulse in real time, but we hadn't descended yet to that moment of needing to address everything the audience ever says, like it ended up happening in the Sherlock days of TV shows. (Edited for typos because omg, my fingers get tangled when my brain goes too fast.)

Jamie Morgan

With all the complications of this season, having to write out Oz and Maggie Walsh, and pivoting to Adam as the Big Bad, I really don't think they did a bad job with S4. They realised the main story was too fractured to carry the season, so instead they focused on spotlighting the characters and experimenting with genre, bringing us some of the best episodes of Buffy AND of television - Something Blue, Hush, This Year's Girl/Who Are You, Superstar. I can't wait for next week, you are not prepared!

Alex

The board meeting at the end reminded me of the end of The Bourne Identity. A shady government agency running different experiments/programs.

I🖤Kraken

All these years and it's the first time I heard that word. Brilliant.

Jontor11

Great one guys! I love how this show doesn't take itself too seriously. "Does anyone else miss the Mayor?". It's like the show knows they were not going to top the Mayor this season. This episode was aired in May 2000, and yes, 'The Matrix' came out a year before that.

danzthename

Me too! It's one of my absolute favorites. Can't wait to hear what they think of it.

vala p

Yeah, Mr "I Hate You All" had cared enough and gotten to know them well enough to learn their insecurities.

vala p

I'm really interested for next week, I remember HATING the finale and have never watched it again but so many people are talking it up, so I'm anxious to see it again and see what I missed

Onno Smits

I believe it's literally the next up when a slot opens up, so shouldn't be too long now. It's gonna be a bit wonky with the timelines and connections between the two shows, but I'm looking forward to their reaction! I'm guessing they'll really dig the whole "Angel in L.A."-vibe.

Onno Smits

It's also got a lot in common with the "World Security Council" from The Avengers and CA:Winter Soldier. Bunch of people very high up the chain that have no idea what's actually happening "down on the ground". 😅 It's even called "The Council" in Buffy.

Paul Komoroski

While the S4 Finale is not my cup of kombucha, I get why other people love it.

Youtalkingtome

We've talked about doing Firefly at some point. I really do wanna check it out

Youtalkingtome

I really did like that resolution, the "Voltron" attack.

Youtalkingtome

Dear lord, that's nuts. This must have been the era when 85-pound supermodels were the ideal.

Lola Lirola

It definitely was! The awful thing is, I definitely remembered her as "plump", and now that we're watching it here, I realize how much of a lie that was!!

jimmy2k4o .

Nice ref. I always called it the whole is greater than the sum. If a single entity had Buffy’s strength and reflex, Giles’ knowledge and experience, willow raw magical power and Xander’s creativity………..they’d be a force to run and hide from.

Kt B

“Boil the air” is brilliant! Really works here, especially with the plot and the effects. Still, I have a soft spot for “Burn the land and boil the sea - you can’t take the sky from me”

Kt B

Ok, but Spike straight up lied to each of them. He exploited existing insecurities to drive the wedge by fabricating conversations that others were having behind each other’s backs. Yes, the cracks in the friendship were there, but unlike Yoko, he very intentionally chose his words to be hurtful, including reporting conversations that never actually happened and providing commentary that spoke directly to those insecurities just to drive each point home. Yoko may not have been a salient factor, but Spike definitely was.

Kt B

I concur with everyone else that next week’s episode is amazing…in a very Buffy way. I didn’t really appreciate it fully until I watched Passion of the Nerd’s analysis. His breakdowns of Buffy episodes are BRILLIANT and so well-researched. It would be a shame to skip all of the previous episodes he’s done to go straight to this one, but if anyone is interested, search YouTube for “TPN’s Buffy Guide Restless.” It has no spoilers for future episodes.

Carl Wilson

That's exactly my point. The "Yoko Factor" was that Spike created imaginary enemies, the way that people outside the group made Yoko out to be the enemy.

Kt B

Guys - I know it’s lighthearted and off-the-cuff, and really ultimately not that big of a deal, but your imposing amatonormative motivations to Forrest’s feelings about Riley makes me sigh every time. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have no problem with Forrest being gay or bi, but the romantic attraction you assume were not explicitly in the show. What was in the show was Forrest being jealous of Buffy for taking away Riley’s time and attention and dividing his loyalty. There are bonds between adults that can and do manifest as wanting someone’s company, craving their respect, safeguarding their welfare, and being ready to go “ride-or-die” for them. That’s consistent with a romantic bond, but also happens with blood family, found family, mentor/student relationships, and importantly, comrades-in-arms. Here, Riley and Forrest are literally “brothers-in-arms,” as they share the maternal figure of Maggie Walsh in addition to holding each other’s lives in their hands with every deployment into Sunnydale. On the one hand, I am grateful that we have advanced as a society to the point where no one blinks at the possibility of a male pairing. On the other hand, it’s exhausting to see the side effect of LGB acceptance being centering sexual and romantic attraction as motivations for fictional characters and real people. It’s not the worst thing to explain Forrest’s possessiveness of Riley and antagonism toward Buffy as romantic frustration, but it is reductive. As someone who chronically hopes others can see adult relationships in many dimensions, it’s tiring to hear this kind of characterization everywhere, as presented here, or with Sam and Frodo, with Holmes and Watson, with Kirk and Spock, and so on. In their rush to find representation everywhere, some queer people have begun erasing or minimizing other types of relationships, and since you gentlemen aren’t doing it for that reason, I thought I’d just give you a friendly reminder from a different perspective. There are people in my life I would be prepared to fight a bear for (or an abusive SO), not because out of romantic hopes but out of shared history and bonds that transcend boxes. That is all.

Claire Eyles

Apologies as well, I need to take a month off of your Patreon for financial reasons. I will be back hopefully by the time you're doing season 5 of Buffy.
