I was a total horse girl when I was a kid and read all the Black Stallion novels. They cast Alec a lot younger in the movie. Book Alec was in his late teens and on that boat solo. I heard that Kelly Reno got cast as Alec in large part because he grew up on a ranch and could ride bareback. The second novel DOES have The Black's Arabian owner show up to claim him after seeing news coverage about the race. The awful man from the ship had actually stolen The Black and the owner was actually a nice man. He takes The Black home to Africa but ends up willing him back to Alec after he dies. Anyway, it's a gorgeous movie and I really enjoyed the reaction.
