I am so excited for the next ep! It will also be the 100th episode of the show, and it's smashing. This one was quite cool, too. Loved the Korean dinner, and the whole band being there. But hey, a really bad Emily moment!

I totally thought next week's was this one and I was all excited to watch. Still excited for this one. Next week can't get here soon enough though. 😂

The Teletubbies Sunshine baby always makes me feel like I'm on drugs. Seriously, that little baby makes me woozy...

I could be giving Richard too much credit but I don't think he actually intended to hit Emily's car, my read is he was distracted and angered (but not to the point he would intentionally hurt her) seeing Emily chatting with Simon right after learning about the date and stopped paying attention to his driving. Still a bad look for that to distract him so badly in the first place.

Emily back to her worst at the end!! and Richard acting like a petulant baby running into her car. They deserve each other. The Korean dinner is such a fun bit, Gil on the 'guitar' :) Side note you will love. Miss Celine is played by the incomparable Alex Borstein (Susie from Mrs Maisel) and almost unrecognisable in this role, with the make up and her voice. Next week is a banger !!!!

This is definitely the part where I get maddest at Richard and Emily - but I do think it’s not quite true that they don’t care about Lorelai’s happiness. I think they’re arrogant and controlling enough to think they know how she can best be happy, and they think she can’t possibly really be happy with someone they wouldn’t have chosen. I love the rest of this episode though because the band at the New Year dinner is the greatest.

There are moments when Emily and Richard show teeny tiny signs of being humans you can sympathize with and then one of them do shish like this.

What I hate most about Emily with Christopher, is her saying that Lorelai being with a sub-par man (by their standards) would somehow deny her whatever “greatness” she is do. As if she hasn’t just mentioned Lorelai’s business success and competence in the dress scene! This is especially egregious considering that Christopher is NOT THAT GREAT OF A BUSINESSMAN. What exactly is he offering that Luke doesn’t?? And yeah — I’ve never liked Richard, but if I was Emily this would make me do a police report and force him to move out. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Carl Wilson

You heard her, Sarah - Christopher represents "breeding." It's all snobbery.

Carl Wilson

Yes, Richard was in the wrong here, but to some degree his freakout was understandable - he had no idea Emily was going on dates. (Well, *a date.) He wasn't going on dates. I think he never really imagined that their separation could be permanent until he heard that. (If he did he would have gotten an apartment rather than live in the poolhouse.) And while I agree with you it was wrong of him to keep his lunches with Pennilyn Lott a secret, it's also not the same - those weren't dates in any way, they were just annual check-ins with an old friend. (And unlike with Luke re Chris, it's true that Emily could probably not be trusted with that information so it put Richard in a very difficult position.) Nothing happened with Simon, of course, but it was a real date with an eye to the idea that something could happen in the future. That's the difference. None of which, again, justifies his behavior. Anyway, all of that pales next to what Emily did at the end. There's no reason for Lorelai ever to forgive her for that. Or Rory, who was already trying to keep Christopher away and had just reconciled with him.

Carl Wilson

It's extraordinary that that's Alex Borstein. (Back from her early role as the Independence Inn harpist!)

On a whole other subject - it's great that the gayageum gets the little spotlight moment at the Korean dinner, especially with Sebastian Bach playing it. It is a really cool instrument. I've seen people use it in jazz improvisations and all kinds of things. Here's a YouTuber playing the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" on gayageum: https://youtu.be/BjoVOLHe75U?si=lTo8D7sZpKK1IdhV

Yasemin

Yeah, I was going to mention Alex Borstein, too, but then remembered that we had already met Miss Celine and mentioned that (I think) in season 3. :)

Yasemin

Ok, I think "an old friend" is a bit of a stretch, considering he used to be engaged to her. And we have 40 secret dates/meetings here. So I don't think it was OK for Richard to do that.

Carl Wilson

As I said, I don't think it was okay for him to lie about it - I can see why one *would lie to Emily, but then those are also reasons just not to be married to Emily. But he is, so he should not have kept a secret. But personally I really don't doubt the lunches were innocent. Not dates. I have plenty of exes, including my ex-wife, who I would call "old friends" years later, quite free of any romantic aspect. (Which is how Richard characterized those meetings.) And if a current partner didn't want me to see or talk to them, I'd tell them that they don't get to make that demand, but I'll talk through any worries they have.

Yasemin

Fair enough, I also think the lunches were innocent in the sense that nothing happened. And I get being friends with an ex (some exes at least, lol). Still, it just continues to have a different connotation (if only for your current partner) compared to a "regular" old friend, I think, so just out of respect, I'd say it was wrong to do that (ie, secretly), especially for almost 40 years.

Yasemin

I prefer reading it like that, too! I always found that scene so ambiguous! Can't handle it, lol.

Richard and Emily have such a strange and complex dynamic. This was no different. I love Emily so much but this was one of her worst judgment calls. Just b/c she doesn't think Luke is good enough for Lorelai doesn't mean she should've meddled like that. She never seems to get the lesson that Lorelai hates, above all else, is being handled by her parents and that's what has continually driven her away; the control they want to have over her life and decisions. On the Logan/Rory front, I enjoy the rare times when Rory doesn't get what she feels like she should. She totally felt like she was going to get Logan to ask her on a date/to go with him to NY. Why? Just because he's friendly and flirts with her but he's pretty decent to most people and they have always had a good rapport and he's never technically even once tried to put moves on her. But Marty's speech made her feel like oh he wants me. And she's always been able to bat her little eyes and get what she wants and Logan doesn't fall for her ingenue act. It's so refreshing in comparison to how it was with Marty or Dean and even Jess. There are moments in the show - and they're not over by far - when she seems incredibly unaware of her own sense of entitlement and Logan, despite his many other flaws, always is aware of both his and also hers. She never expects rejection pf any kind - school, love, professional - and that in and of itself is a level of entitlement that's so wild for someone who has so little experience in life, in relationships, in journalism, in the world. Excited about next week. What a great episode!

Carl Wilson

I know but it's still so impressive
