catching this late at night here! cannot wait lol

Gail Hislop

The break up is so layered. I always hated the scene in Dosey’s when Lorelai kept pushing to tell Luke what she wanted to say, when he’d told her he needed time to process. She literally chased him down and then wouldn’t stop talking at him even though he obviously was not ready to hear it right then. Him ending things then was about a lot of things and one of them was his insecurity knowing he doesn’t ’fit in’ or have the respect of her parents. The class divide he feels around them was very subtly in the movie he was watching and the dialogue. My Man Godfrey is the film and it’s about a very rich society woman in the 1930’s who falls in love with a tramp and tries to get her family to accept him. Luke is watching the scene where they have just snobbishly rejected him at a big event and she is saying ‘I’d never have brought you here if I’d known they would humiliate you’. That is playing on his mind along with the other things he sees as issues for them and I think at that point in the store he just feels cornered and that her family will always see him as not good enough. maybe if she’d just let it be for a bit and not even tried to talk to him so soon, instead of selfishly just wanting to force her explanations on him and not respect his need for space to think, everything would have been fine. The fact that he came running to her place after her call shows how much he cares and he even tells her it’s okay that she called him and looks like he is open to working things out. But then she just chooses to ignore him again, talk over him, doesn’t even really notice that he is showing he cares with his action and self sabotages. And that isn’t the first time she has done that in her past relationships. I was hoping for the best for them during the episode and seeing her so broken was hard, but by the end I was kind of on Luke’s side. It will be interesting to see where this all goes now. I am glad you guys are really liking Logan now, particularly after his actions in this episode. The way he instantly drops out of his card game when he notices something is wrong with Rory and offers up his car and Frank for her was genuinely sweet and thoughtful. Then his chat with her at the end to clarify the boundaries or rules for them to go forward was classy! My MVP for this ep was definitely Frank, what a sweetheart and I loved Rory being so respectful to him too.

Please tell me your Tom Cruise break-up movie is Taps.... :D

Roland

(paragraph breaks please! :) ) But good analysis, I mostly agree!

Roland

I'm really glad that there was a male writer for this episode, it really helped sell that Luke wasn't the bad guy here, nor was Logan, even if they do have their...foibles. (And obviously Mr Pallardino knows his trade very well anyway). Likewise having two guys do the breakdown was great too. I might have to find a female couple of reactors to compare... :)

Adam Grant

This episode really nails a particular kind of anxious/avoidant dynamic that comes up a lot in dating. As someone who's experienced it firsthand I can really feel Lorelai's pain (Lauren Graham knocked it out of the park in this episode btw)--she just wants reassurance that things are okay even if she respects Luke needing to think, and other people like Sookie and Gypsy got in her head and made her feel more insecure about the situation to the point of things boiling over. It's a very painful emotional place to just have to stew in for an indefinite period of time so I understand why she confronts Luke the way she does at the store, and then the regret of "this great thing got ruined by something minor that should've been easily preventable" is also really tough. At the same time it's also easy to see how from Luke's perspective he just needs time to digest things, and how Lorelai comes across a little pushy and manic in the store, and you can't fault him for having reservations about potentially having to always put up with Christopher and Emily. Just really sad but great writing all around.

This episode breaks my heart. I was weepy all the way through. I understand what you're saying about Luke, but as Gail said, it's the class thing that is really bugging him. He is treated like less than a person by everyone from Lorelai's family world, who can see him only as a clueless rube, with naked contempt. And he knows that as much as his Lorelai is Stars Hollow Lorelai, and Dragonfly Lorelai, she's also a Gilmore and always will be. That's underlined by his running into Rory when she's in a limo - he was honking at it because he hates rich entitled people taking up half the street, and look, it's another Gilmore. None of this is Lorelai's fault of course. But her own entitlement does show up in her assertive personality, her own tendency to manipulate in smaller ways. Luke loves her in spite of all that. But looked at through this lens, she's not *just an innocent bystander. I was going to point out the significance of My Man Godfrey being the film he was watching at Kurt's movie house, but Gail covered that. I'll just mention that it's quite a coincidence because I was just recommending that movie to you in a comment on the weekend, because it's directed by Gregory La Cava, who also made Stage Door, and the tramp hero is played by William Powell, the star of the Thin Man movies! The plot as Gail described it sounds much grimmer than it really is - it has a social conscience, but it's also a sparkling romantic comedy.

Oh man this breakup was hard. After all the will they/won't they to see them break up like this was difficult. Part of me, though, feels like Luke gave up on them a bit too easily. You had that horoscope in your wallet for years and you knew her and her parents have contentious relationship and that they're controlling and yes she didn't tell you about seeing Christopher but I feel like this was about Luke's insecurity as opposed to anything else that Lorelai specifically did. He let Emily/Richard/Christopher and the whole class thing divide them even though he knows who Lorelai really is and it's tough but I also understand him needing time. The nice thing about Logan in comparison to say, Dean or Jess, as a male suitor for Rory is that he is way more self-aware than anyone she's been interested in before. It's a nice change b/c Logan's insecurities don't mask Rory's. He knows he's a rich, entitled, intelligent underachiever who doesn't want a girlfriend. He's always upfront and honest with her about who he is and recognizes things about her that she doesn't or doesn't want to. There's a conversation at some point they have that is so good at him calling her out on her bullshit but I can't recall when it happens. I enjoy the dichotomy he presents as someone she meets outside of her mother's world and from her own/her grandparents'. It also highlights how much different Lorelai and Rory are as people and where they're most comfortable and this season's really good at starting to really separate Rory into her own person with her own world outside of Lorelai/Stars Hollow, for better or worse...

This episode and break up could have gone so wrong and they just nail it. Love how Taylor's ribbons inoculate us for the actual break up, Lorelei is wallowing just like she said in season 1, and the bond of Rory coming to support her mother is the catalyst to cement Logan as a mostly good guy. Chef's kiss. I have not seen the Sopranos so this episode makes me think of the Dreams episode of MASH and giggled that the poker fits MASH too. I know you guys get the MASH references (more to come 😁) but unsure if it's movie or series. It's season 8 ep 22 if anyone likes intriguing dream sequences. I said it back in episode two, but once Dean and Rory are over, this becomes possibly my favorite season. I think you really see the palladinos in the pocket and even some blueprints the characterizations we see later in Mrs. Maisel.

Carl Wilson

One thing: This isn't a defense of Christopher at all, screw him, but I think it's weird to say that his motivation is to sleep with Lorelai. He clearly has a deluded and, to his mind, romantic idea that they belong together, that it's destiny, always has been, since they were kids. Obviously he's incapable of handling any of the real-world responsibilities that go along with that, and more of it is about his ego than anything else. But he's not just trying to get laid. That's seldom any character's primary motivation on this show - it's not how its world works. Even with the most shallow characters, it's about emotions.

AmyAin'tMyName

I feel for Lorelei, but she always pushes. I didn't take that scene as Luke breaking up with her. He asked repeatedly for time, but she needs to feel better right now so she ignores that and pushes. She's a great, layered character. I just hate that it makes Luke seem like he bailed at the first sign of trouble. I can't fully get on board with Logan. I think he genuinely cares, but he's so condescending. And not telling her there were people at his place was douchey.

Gail Hislop

Thanks for the shoutouts! I got a bit wordy, but it’s nice to know people agree with my assessment. The dialogue in the brief scene from the movie can be so easily overlooked for its significance to how Luke would be feeling in that moment, only an hour or so after the Gilmore’s had been treating him with such disrespect. I think there’s so many things at play in the whole ‘ending’ things with Lorelai, it’s all very complex.

Gail Hislop

Sorry Roland, but I can’t do paragraphs when I’m writing from my phone app. I probably hadn’t intended to write so much either

Tobias Keezy

Lorelai is often a very pushy person who imposes her quirky, "I'm so special" crap on everyone else without really considering their feelings. Luke said he needed some time to think, and she couldn't even let him have one day without blowing it up. Luke is terrible at communicating. He's spent most of his life as a taciturn grump with almost no friends and he had to read a self-help book to spur him into go for a woman he'd been pining for over like eight years. Despite her obvious problems here, Lorelai is right that when things like this happen, you can't just disappear, tell nobody where you're going, and then turn into a silent mannequin like you're all alone. In a relationship, you have an obligation to keep talking to someone or at least tell them why and for how long you'll stop talking, even if you're mad at them. Just say, "Give me a week, I need to organize my thoughts after this big bombshell blew up." This is not the last time that these messy traits of theirs will be relevant.

Carl Wilson

That's right. I keep thinking about Luke's reaction in the store as a version of what Oz says to Willow (on Buffy) at one point: "I'm sorry this is hard for you. But I told you what I need. So I can't help feeling like the reason you want to talk is so you can feel better about yourself." It's really a mismatch of their personal styles, as you said - Luke doesn't process by talking, he processes by reflecting quietly. Whereas Lorelai can't handle quiet very well. But Luke could at least give her some sense of how long she needs to wait.

Yasemin

It doesn't feel like an actual breakup to me (more like a transient crisis) but the way it's written, it exposes their vulnerabilites in very credible ways. Lorelai's anxiety being triggered when Luke withdraws, and Luke feeling blocked to take more of an initiative (even though, to be fair, he went over to her house to check on her)...is believable. What I always stuggle a bit with is Lorelai's "not that kind of girl" speech and her stepping back after he shows up. She could totally have said "I am humiliated but I also really needed to see you". Both truths can exist at once.

Yasemin

I have always loved Rory's reaction when consulting the "breakfast cereal girls", it's just such a funny delivery: "too much DRAMA!"

Yasemin

The main issue with Lorelai's behavior with regards to not telling Luke about going to Christopher (and spending the night and getting drunk with him) is that she now only told him because she HAD to, when Chris showed up. As in, would she have told him otherwise? Probably not. So her "nothing happened, please believe me" is coming more from a place of anxiety over losing him than actual reflection, I think. And Luke is not stupid. So I 100% get why he is pissed, and needs some time.

Roland

No worries! 🤩

This is definitely one of the episodes where it's absolute TORTURE to have to wait a week for the next episode! This episode was so well written! Although, I HATE that Luke and Lorelai split!!! Emily and Christopher had absolutely NO right to do what they did, none what-so-ever! It makes me sick to my stomach to just to think about it!! It's so frustrating!!!! Yes, Lorelai should have told Luke from the very beginning about going to see Christopher, but I'm going a step further to say that she shouldn't have gone there without Rory, out of respect for Luke! She also could have brought Luke with her, or let him decide if he wanted to go, but either way, Rory and Lorelai should be there at the same time. That way there would never be any question about whether something happened between Christopher and Lorelai, and most importantly, there would be no reason to lie or keep secrets! Lorelai has EVERY right to be pissed off at Christopher and Emily! Emily was the one to orchestrate the whole thing, and Christopher is dumb enough to listen to her! If I were Lorelai, I would 1000% cut Emily and Christopher off, whether there is a reconciliation with Luke, or not! Rory is an adult and can handle her own relationship with her father! There would be the occasional event that Lorelai would have to see Christopher, but she could just ignore him. No drama, no yelling or fighting... just maintaining proper distance! Neither Emily or Christopher deserve more than that! There comes a point in your life where you have to permanently cut out the people that deliberately and repeatedly manipulate, and hurt you! Enough is ENOUGH, already!!! Just saying... lol!

Dil

Logan might be the most self-aware character on the entire show!

two pennies no waiting

Totally agree. What I find so bizarre about how it all pans out is that although Lorelei was pulling up behind her, it was Rory that calls her to go to Chris's house and the morning of the reenactment, Rory is the one that obfuscates the truth from Luke first. There were so many times and ways Lorelei could have told Luke and could have lessened the blow using Rory's immature behavior as the scape goat.

fire12wife

Lorelai shouldn't have cornered Luke at Doose's. She pushed him to say that it's all too much! She should have let him come to her, or given him a couple of days, at least! Cornering him in the store, in front of everyone, especially Taylor, was the worst thing she could have done! Maybe, if she had given him time to think, and to miss her, he wouldn't have broken up with her! Oh, and SO glad Rory confronted Taylor! He's beyond ridiculous!

The Inedible Mattman

I remember watching this for the first time and thinking how much I appreciated Logan! So much better than Dean or Jess.

Youtalkingtome

This break up is really upsetting. Like I know it's layered but I need them together

Youtalkingtome

I feel like I have been on both sides. I have been lied to and I have needed reassurance to the point to where I couldn't sleep at night. It's really clever how they are doing this and it really makes it hard to side with either character. You really get where both are coming from

Youtalkingtome

He might have given up too easily but that is his right and I have been there before

Youtalkingtome

It's been such a great season so far. I am really locked in.

Youtalkingtome

I really hope it's not an actual breakup and that we can resolve this

Youtalkingtome

Honestly yeah. Actions speak louder than words and he's been great

Youtalkingtome

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. It's my favorite break up movie. I can't explain it. I have never seen Taps, but would love to check it out

Roland

You'll get my joke once you've seen it. 🤩 He wasn't the lead in this movie (Timothy Hutton), but Cruise is an absolute standout.
