I love this episode, putting to rest the mystery around Tara, the full acceptance of her into the scoobies, love it!!

- LOVE this episode. Amber Benson crushing it, love Spike saving the day, and I just love seeing the Scoobies embrace her after she's felt on the outside for so long. - This is verrrrrry early Amy Adams. She'd basically only done Drop Dead Gorgeous at this point. Her guest spot on The West Wing was still a couple years away. Her role here is lowkey the most sinister part of the family subplot for me. Just a huge ball of internalized misogyny. - Hello, Sandy! That's the girl vamp!Willow killed/turned in "Doppelgangland."

We finally know what Tara is. She's a Scooby. I also like that we get a brief visit from Ripper Giles at the end.

Great one guys! Yeah, it was in the middle of season 4 when Tara sabotaged the "find the demon" spell they were trying to do to find Adam. We all got suspicious of her because of that, turns out she was just afraid.

GemmaBeeBee

Also love the moment with Riley and Sandy in the bar. I wonder if you recognised her? She is the girl that vampire Willow bit and clearly sired in the Bronze in Dopplegangland.

So cool that you guys picked up on the culty vibes of her family immediately. This episode really does a great job of yet again using the supernatural as metaphor to tell a whole mini narrative about Tara. Magic as a metaphor for sexuality and Tara's relationship with Willow (when her Dad says he hoped she would come to college to 'get it out of her system' - so similar to some people believing being gay is just a phase!) and of course demons as a metaphor for sin, and how some families use religious doctrine and such concepts to control and abuse women. Such a powerful episode! And with a beautiful performance at its heart from Amber Benson.

Well, this episode, as always, made me cry! I love it so much. Can’t wait to see next week!

Keeping up the Buffy/Spider-Man parallels - isn't the latest Spider-Man movie kinda all about dealing with the fallout of a reality-altering spell?

"half demon like Doyle" The Angel/Buffy universe comparisons have begun

Now that Buffy's officially moving back home I can say that some of the things that drags season 4 down in my overall rankings compared to 3 and 5 is that it felt very transitional in figuring out how to deal with our chracters not being in highschool, and the college never had as much personality or sense of place as Sunnydale the town or the highschool. That especially goes for just having Giles' house as the meetup/training space as opposed to the much more memorable highschool library or now the magic shop. It wasn't a bad season by any means, had a bunch of 10/10 episodes, but they were definitely still finding their footing with the cast being out of highschool. I didn't remember Amy Adams being in this episode at all, I might not have known her by name the first time I watched this one. Great episode though, getting Tara's backstory and cementing her place in the gang.

I really like the twist, but I think it would have been really interesting too if she actually was half demon. Regardless, it is such a sweet episode with a beautiful end and some funny moments in between.

I really love this episode. And I love Tara. When the Scoobies stand up to protect her, it always gets me a little choked up. Wild that Amy Adams is in it too.

The only good birthday anyone on this show has ever had? Also, to point out the obvious, when Buffy and the gang affirm that they're "family" to Tara, it's about the idea of community as "chosen family" for queer people who don't fit into hetero paradigms and also may have been rejected by biological families like Tara's. The interweaving of Willow and Tara's magic with their sexuality is an ongoing thing, and Tara's conservative father, brother, and cousin seeing women's magic and her "lifestyle" as evil and demonic is part of that. I always do wish there were a little sign near the end from Beth (Amy Adams) of wanting to get away too, but unfortunately she's all bought in. Internalized sexism can be like that.

I've lost track of how many times I've rewatched this show and I never made that connection before

Season 5 just keeps bringing it!! I always loved this episode focused on Tara and you guys are right that it was a real long game misdirect on what her back story was. That tease in Season 4 with her messing up the spell to see demons to lay a seed of doubt about her. That poor girl having to grow up with that family, be essentially a servant for the males and to be lied to by them about her future, making her believe she is evil and saying 'we know how to control this 'demon' aspect 'of her. Her father is the real demon in this narrative!! I wonder if you noticed that as soon as Tara sees her brother her stammer comes to the fore and all through this episode whenever she is talking with anyone in her family. it is really pronounced. It's a subtle detail, but very telling and then whenever she is with Willow she is eloquent and has no sign of it. She feels safe and secure and free with her. Always love that the actual demons in Anya and Spike are the ones who save the day to reveal the truth and then everyone else standing up for Tara and accepting her as family is so special. And that last scene with the girls and that dance where its revealed they are floating above everyone is so beautifully shot.

Well-said! I love the witchcraft-as-LGBT metaphor in this one!

Yes, if I remember right vamp Willow asks her name and she says Sandy. Then vamp Willow says that if people cooperate she can make them ‘young and strong forever’ and if not. She bites her and then asks ‘questions? Comments?’

Stephanie P.

We don’t get a lot about Tara’s mom but when Tara tries to give Willow that Doll’s Eye crystal in one of her early appearances in season 4, she frames it as a family heirloom. Her mother is insinuated as also being a witch, but she died when Tara was younger. So it makes things seem darker in that scene when her father says, “You’re almost 20… almost the same age as your mother when…” insinuating to Tara that her mother died because she was a witch (obviously not the case). It’s definitely a testament to Tara’s heart that she came out of that toxic home life and is as kind as she is.

I’d turn gay for Sandy, too. That’s a lie. Someone else turned me first.

Kt B

Reminds me of this Angel episode they just watched, with the burrowing demon (burro demon) that Cordelia calls a donkey demon.

Kt B

I liked Tara’s joke, and I didn’t even know what an insect reflection was. It just sounded absurd, and I love absurdist humor. I could see that line in a Monty Python sketch.

Kt B

Love Tara. Love Sandy (and a great call-back). Love that the found-family theme is flourishing. Not loving what they’re doing with Riley to manufacture conflict. It’s believable, but it’s so…unnecessary. I can’t wait for you to see the next episode! It’s one of my absolute favorites!

Erica

The biggest lies in this episode are: -vampires have missionary sex while fully covered by a blanket (i know it's network tv, but we've had much more risque sex scenes than this) -spike is a top

Mariska Costeris

I love the scene where Buffy and Giles talk late at night about Dawn. I’ve always loved the Slayer - Watcher dynamic and season 5 is such a joy in that respect.

Jamie Morgan

What I love/hate about Spike punching Tara is that it was entirely unnecessary. Buffy saw Tara while the spell was still active, she's obviously not a demon. But of course Tara's family would only believe it if someone was violent towards her...

Anjali Agarwal

Spike saying he doesn't care what happens but is the one to figure out what's going on is just hilarious.

Paul Komoroski

Family is one of my favorite episodes in whole show. Tara--my favorite character--gets an episode. The Amy Adams cameo. The scene where the Scoobies embrace Tara into their family: tears. S5 is personally my favorite season (other people are entitled to theirs). You've now watched the beginnings of why. Especially this one and the previous episode No Place Like Home: great stuff!

Tina

Wow, I just cackled, late in the evening, in my hotel room, really loudly. The other guest are probably wondering what spell I'm casting... XD
