Most probably my favorite episode of the Season! Kleya has to be the absolute G.O.A.T IMO. What a performance by Elizabeth Dulau, right out of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, as said by another commentator. For those who have seen the whole series already, watch this: https://youtu.be/Eo99rrgCuls?si=DjUOJXj6qR4H2BPo Also, Loni is the most important piece of the Rebellion, hands down. Unsung hero. Same for Luthen... What a master of his trade. And The Rise of Skywalker is absolute garbage, no contest. ;-)

I remembered Melshi from his appearance in the prison on Narkina V. So when we saw him when Vel called who has this weapon, I recognized him. But I didn't clock the blaster... no way!

BBY 1 is actually the limit... There's no BBY 0 (like there's no year 0 in our calendar. It's 1 BC, then 1 AD)

Neill Shaughness

Death Star is not operational. At least not in it's offensive capability. This is still a year before the events of Star Wars where the Death Star had just become operational and made itself public. It is definitely close though. Almost certainly a functioning space station.

Yannick, from Montréal

The meeting of Dedra and Luthen is amazing. His "At the moment, only 2 pieces of questionable provenance in the gallery" is awesome. I will explain more in the next episode! LR: "There's a whole Galaxy out there waiting to disgust you..." What a line

Yannick, from Montréal

As I explained, BBY 1 is like 1 BC in our calendar. There's no 0. So the events of Episode IV (A New Hope) are right around the corner, not in a year.

The casting for young kleya was excellent. The young actress was great and very believable as a young Kleya. I’m very glad they gave us the backstory of Luthen and Kleya. Their dynamic throughout the entire show has been interesting and I was curious about their relationship.

The trade routes, embargoes and tariffs plot lines of The Phantom Menace, are more relevant in our world today than in 1999. George Lucas might’ve been twenty seven years ahead of the world with that plot line.

Paul T Hewes

-Lonni was a goddamn hero. I understand WHY Luthen did what he did, but it still stung.

ScarlettMi

It’s like late December in the year BBY 1. Imagine New Year’s Eve is A New Hope.

ScarlettMi

The actual politics in the Prequels was actually really clever, but I wish he’d brought in someone else for the script.

ScarlettMi

Is that in this episode? So much happens so quickly. I forgot it was here.

JC

As hard as it was to watch Lonnie’s death made sense and also is good staging for showing that Luthen doesn’t ask others for anything he doesn’t expect from himself.

I've probably said this on previous episodes but this might be my favorite episode of the whole show. It's so incredibly well constructed and so effective. I'm not gonna defend Rise of Skywalker but I think I still liked it more than The Last Jedi, though I've only seen both once and don't plan on watching either again. I've soured more on The Last Jedi the more time has passed while Rise of Skywalker was "eh, it's fine" for me. Last Jedi was definitely taking a bigger swing and Rise was playing it safer but that big swing was a total miss for me. I wasn't even that big a fan of Rogue One either, but it's a testament to how great this show is that even with different tastes on all those other entries we can all be in agreement it's easily the best thing done in the whole franchise since the original trilogy.

Mithroch

I knew right away it was Melshi when he raised his hand.... but that's only because I didn't know who he was in the prison episodes the first season and it was pointed out to me.

Neill Shaughness

Also, right there with Joe as a Last Jedi defender.

Yannick, from Montréal

Also, when Luthen tells him "Yavin", he was testing to see if it rang any bells. It didn't, so he was checking this box out as still a safe place for the rebellion. No need to take measures to secure it further. But it was also Lonni's death sentence right there.

Roland

I'd love to watch a Luthen and Kleya prequel series, how a (special forces?) footsoldier and a child became spymasters under Moscow Rules, as well as galaxy-leading antiquities experts. The actress that played the young Kleya could play a late teens Kleya, old beyond her years. I'd recast someone younger for Luthen, but have Dulau and Skarsgaard provide continuity and narration through interview and diary records (on Yavin or Hoth or wherever).

Neill Shaughness

This being the umteenth I've watched this, one thing that dawns on me is that the Imperial inability to admit weakness is their greatest weakness. They can't believe that they were outsmarted by "criminals" as they view the rebels at this point so they assume Dedra is a leak, because they need a fall guy, but arresting Dedra gives the rebellion the opportunity to finish off Luthen and prevent them from forcing information out of him. Imperial ego is prioritized over imperial security

Neill Shaughness

*never seen a silencer To be fair, blasters are already pretty quiet compared to guns. Irl "silencers" are still pretty loud if you're within thirty feet

Carl Wilson

That was an incredible episode of television. I guess episode 8, with the Ghorman massacre, is the one that won all the Emmys, and I can see why. But this episode felt special. It basically gives us a whole other imaginary series in fragmentary form, an entire lifetime for these characters while an incredibly tense present-day plot plays out too. Teach this one in screenwriting classes. I wish Luthen had killed Dedra in the gallery. It killed me that it ended without us seeing Kleya get out of there, but as you said, I guess she kind of has to have made it. Whew.

Neill Shaughness

In response to how the prequels handled Anakin, I totally agree that the prequels completely botched that origin story. That said, after I saw Andor for the first time I felt my love for SW come back and I finally gave the Clone Wars animated series a shot. The show has highs and lows (more highs than lows) but the most amazing thing it accomplished is it got me invested in Anakin for the first time. I'll forever sing its praises for that.

Roland

There are a few genuinely quiet firearms, when used with subsonic rounds, mostly evolutions of the Welrod supplied to Resistance units in WW2. But beyond those, you're exactly correct, silencers / suppressors are intended to reduce the noise from being heard a mile away to a hundred yards away. That's incredibly useful in a lot of situations, but silent it ain't. 🙂

Lonnie sealed his fate for certain when he pressed for where they would go, when he made Luthen tell him "Yavin" before he would give up the details, Luthen had to kill him. - Luthen isn't even sure he's making it off alive, much less getting Lonnie out. - Remember how important it was the empire find the rebel base in New Hope, how critical that was. Imagine if they had known from capturing Lonnie at this point. - The chance of capture and interrogation is too great, the chance of getting Lonnie out safely is too small. An unacceptable risk to Luthen. - With Yavin in Lonnie's head, he had to die. I think there are a TON of very valid criticisms of the prequels and the sequels. Some of which you can apply even to the originals if they weren't overcome by the charm and great performances. But for me, those are mostly just rough edges. Star Wars at its worst is still better than half the sci fi out there, and almost everything is still FUN to watch. The more you watch the prequels AND the sequels.... the more you notice the good things. They are worth it. I do hope, even if not for the channel, you guys someday check out at least the core episodes of Clone Wars and Rebels.

With 14 Emmy nominations for this season, Andor only won one Emmy for the Gilroy brother that wrote episode 9. I do think 9 is fantastic, but I agree 8 and 10 are the best two episodes of the season. It’s also criminal that Genevieve (Mon Mothma) wasn’t even nominated for an Emmy.😕

Yannick, from Montréal

For Clone Wars and Rebels, it would have to be a curated list, but there are some gems in there, definitely. And I would suggest to watch Rogue One: The Andor Cut (very well made edit) instead of the original release.

Kristi Govertsen

Although I hate to admit it, Lonni dying is the most full proof way to keep from tipping off the Empire that the most powerful secret of all had been leaked. Imagine the torture they would inflict if they captured him? Beyond torture, Lonni breaking means losing any advantage the Rebellion might have in utilizing this information. By extension, Lonni dying was also the best way to protect Lonni’s family, since they too could have been captured, tortured, or killed as leverage to torture and break Lonni. PS This is the episode that cemented my earlier assertion that Lonni > Luke, all day and every day.

Kristi Govertsen

I would love to see Tony Gilroy tasked with remaking the prequels and sequels into full seasons of television. There’s a lot of stuff in those six movies to expand upon that could shore up a lot of weak points in the current story structures. The political intrigue and Sith subplots from the prequels for instance. From the sequels: the Han+Leia+Ben story; the rise of Kylo Ren; fleshing out Ray’s backstory to make the last movie make more sense, fleshing out the Palpatine history to make the last movie make more sense, Phasma’s story, Snoke’s story, the aftermath after the last film into what comes next for the Galaxy, etc. There are two more story threads I’d love to see Tony do, but I’ll save them until we get through the finale so I don’t spoil anything coming up in these last two episodes. As an aside, I didn’t hate the last Star Wars movie sequel. I was just a little disappointed that they couldn’t deliver on what seemed to be some potentially rich and interesting ideas. I just think they didn’t have the real estate to build a compelling conclusion (like squishing the last season of GOT into six episodes)—the rush to fit in all the potential cool ideas resulted in gaps in story logic and confusing character development and unclear character motivation. GOT would have benefited from having the same amount of episodes as the previous seasons. And the prequels and sequels would have benefited from either a longer format (like a tv series) or granted the resources to create more movies. If you think about it, the Andor story took eight movies to tell (each arc is roughly the length of a movie, and each has a story with beginning, middle, and end). I wonder what could be possible if the prequels and sequels were each eight movies instead of three?

Jesse

Lonni was a hero and it sucks to go out like that but his death was also unavoidable and necessary. He was holding out that information for safe passage with his family and there was no time to get them out and if the Empire got to him, he knew too much about the rebellion they would torture him.

Jesse

This is my favorite episode of the series and I really think episode 8-12 really do enough to elevate season 2 above season 1.

D Gyre

Yeah, and what I consider core is different than others. But yes, some curated list. I have some already.

Carl Wilson

oh sorry, I guess I misread whatever I was looking at, which I don't remember now. But checking the wiki page, it also won a bunch of technical awards that year - visual effects for the whole season, production design for ep. 8, picture editing for ep. 8, and costumes for ep. 3 (the wedding episode of course). So maybe it was those two ep. 8 technical awards that threw me off.

Yannick, from Montréal

Also, It's so nice to see Luthen and Kleya at every step of their evolution when we see the flashbacks... Real "rags to riches". And on the planet Kleya sees the young kid being executed, that's when we hear Luthen telling her "And when I say to move, you move..." That's exactly what he tells her, to "Move", just before Luthen goes to see Lonni. Kleya's smile at that point is like a nod to the father figure Luthen has become.

Youtalkingtome

I totally get it. Lonni is the true hero of the galaxy

Youtalkingtome

I think that's a great idea. I'd watch every episode

Youtalkingtome

They just make such distinctive sounds. I'd love to see a Star Wars take on them

Youtalkingtome

I think the general story for Anakin is so dang interesting, but the prequels definitely do a sloppy job

Roland

Ah that makes perfect sense, thanks Yannick.

Kristi Govertsen

Cool! I’m glad to be wrong on that front. They deserved all the accolades.💙
