It’s hilarious that they decided to shoot all that ammo to get ride of the birds instead of a tent or an awning.

Erin Mileur

Shirley MacLaine gives the dad the best piece of the cake the end piece is probably all icing.

Erin Mileur

The author of the play and the films screenwriter Robert Harlin plays the minister at the wedding. He also wrote the screenplay for First Wives Club.

Youtalkingtome

Unloading a large-caliber handgun at large swarms of birds is so fundamentally southern America.

Youtalkingtome

I was thinking the same thing when we were watching! That tail is for sure 100% icing!

Courtney

“The brother from Mac & Me” 💀 Who wrote that and why are you the best

GemmaBeeBee

Robert Harling based Shelby’s diabetes on the example of his own sister who passed away in 1985 aged 33. Shelby suffers from severe Type 1 (brittle/labile) diabetes which was difficult to manage in the 1980s and certainly would have been a severe risk in pregnancy. The medications that exist now reduce those risks significantly. Diabetic cate was very different in the 1980s - finger prick testing was fairly primitive at that point so monitoring insulin requirements was much more difficult. Obviously the scene in the hairdressers is very Hollywood and they sped up Shelbys onset!

A lot of people will know Daryl Hannah from the TV show Sense8 by Lilly and Lana Wachowski. It's from 2015.

Heather

Such good casting all around. I can’t imagine anyone else playing these characters. Also, Sally Field and Tom Skerritt teamed up again as husband and wife in the show Brothers and Sisters, although his role was limited (for reasons I won’t spoil).

Youtalkingtome

I've not heard of it. I just looked it up. Great cast! I had completely forgotten about Balthazar Getty!

trenton gragg

This role earned Julia Roberts her first academy award nomination for supporting actress.

Clare Manion

Quick note - "Where was this filmed?" Natchitoches, Louisiana. I was there once, on tour the summer I was a cook for the drum and bugle corps. We were there for 3 or 4 days. I remember being at the stadium where the corps was rehearsing, about 11pm, laying on the warm concrete, waiting for them to come out for their "snack" (really a 4th meal). The air felt like bathwater and everything smelled of flowers and swamp. The next day, admin sent me to a B&B in town so I could rest (2 months of 16-ish hour days). I took multiple pictures of the wallpaper, that's how cute this place was. Later, walking around, I saw a few different signs pointing out filming locations for Steel Magnolias :)

I'm sorry, I love everything Dolly, but I have always thought had a problem withCuppa cuppa cuppa cake. Fruit cocktail is totally the wrong choice for fruit. I can't imagine biting into a nice piece of cake and getting one of those gross grapes or the only cherry in the whole can. It would be better with any other type of fruit. This has bothered me for years so thanks for letting me unburden

Nick Stark

“Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” Truvy’s words of wisdom. Thanks guys for another reaction to an iconic film.

Peggy G

I actually have an "I Slapped Ouiser Boudreaux" t-shirt

Chelsey Main

This is my go to "I need to cry" movie. Sometimes, you just gotta have a big cry to get the feelings out and my family has come to recognize the sound of this movie as "Mom needs some alone time." Even tonight, my husband saw me put this on for your reaction and brought me a blanket and a glass of wine and took over kiddo bedtime duties. Thanks for the great reaction and the midweek Mama Break!

Seth Walker

I have watched this movie so many times throughout my life. It wrecks me every time. But in subsequent viewings you appreciate the women and their close friendships even more. It makes makes me appreciate life and my relationships with those close to me more everytime I see it. The 1990 academy award for best actress went to Jessica Tandy for Driving Miss Daisy and Sally Field wasn't even nominated. They got it so wrong that year...

Pam Nail

My favorite Dolly story comes from this movie. Apparently the director was frustrated with her and told her she couldn't act. She said, "You're not telling me anything I don't know. You didn't hire me because I'm an actor; you hired me because I'm a personality. You're the director, you make it look like I'm acting."

Clare Manion

"I want to hang out and I want to cry" - Oh Joe, truer words... I've seen this many times now and yes, every time. As mentioned by others, Shelby suffers from a severe form of Type 1 Diabetes. I have a cousin who also has Type 1. I don't think her case is as severe and better treatments were available early on, but still. Thankfully, she's doing well and has three perfectly healthy kids. Agreed, Clairee and Ouiser definitely steal the show at times, and provide the perfect comic relief at others. Someday, when I am an old lady, I aspire to be as fabulous as Clairee :)

acidnova

There's a story about the making of the movie that makes me cry, so be forewarned! I know it's been commented elsewhere that the writer was basically wriing about his own sister's death. On the day they were filming taking Shelby off life support, their actual mom happened to be there for that day. When asked if she wanted to leave, she said she needed to stay because she wanted to see Julia Roberts get up out of the bed when they were done.

acidnova

I also get the sense that her diabetes was also not well controlled, and perhaps the repeated drops in sugar or insulin also wreaked more havoc on her body over the years. Google tells me that the real Shelby (actually named Susan) died in 1985 at the age of 33 so she would have been born around 1952. So likely dealt with diabetes all through the 60s and 70s and I don't know how good treatments were at that time. Obviously, insulin injections were available but as far as managing it on a day-to-day basis, she certainly didn't have access to what's available now, or even what was available 20-30 years ago.

Annie519

And furthermore, Robert Harling's mother was on set during the filming of the scenes while Shelby was in the hospital. When Shelby is taken off life support she was asked if she wanted to leave. She declined though, saying that once the scene was over she wanted to see Shelby get up and walk away.

acidnova

I enjoyed Brothers and Sisters but came into it a little later so never saw earlier seasons. It's the first place I ever saw Matthew Rhys and was shocked to find out later that he was Welsh. He does a great American accent!

2026-10-22 18:00 A fun fact, the reason why you never see Shelby during Jack Jr.'s birthday party is because the little boy wouldn't stop crying, so his real mother had to hold him and be a stand in for Julia. Before knowing that I always thought it was weird that they never showed her, lol. I didn't notice it when I watched this when I was younger but Spud was going through depression, most likely because he couldn't find work, he mentions how he didn't get the contract after the carnival scene. You do see him though perk up more as the film goes on. Truvy mentions later how he was now working on a oil rig, I'm pretty sure he sent that to her. And of course he completely changes after Shelby passes, realizing how lucky he was. Now, it was not an excuse to neglect his wife, but it is more understandable and I'm sure it was not easy for people to get help for mental health or even talked about back then. Sally Field's breakdown scene is a masterclass in acting! It was done in one take by the way! She literally goes through all the stages of grief in the matter of 5 or so minutes. You guys were right too, this is Sally Field's movie.

You never question that these two have been best friends for decades, the banter between them is so funny.

I was obsessed with Brothers and Sisters back in the day. Also my introduction to Matthew Rhys and I have adored him ever since.

Ben Gilbert

I saw the play in Atlanta before they made the movie. The play takes place entirely in Truvy's beauty shop.

Ben Gilbert

I still think of Splash! when I see her and we recently saw her in Grumpy Old Men.

I🖤Kraken

Some movies just slip inside your heart and never leave you and this is definitely one of them. I absolutely plan on being Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis when I grow up. Big hair, big hats, big dogs, big love and big laughter is all you really need. So glad you guys got to experience this. I promise, you'll probably be quoting it for the rest of your lives. Love ya more than my luggage!

Ben Gilbert

Sam Shepard, the actor who played Spud, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who also won multiple Obie Awards. He and Jessica Lange were a couple for 27 years.

Liam Mcfarlane

Sally Field is truly one of America's greatest actresses. I recently started watching ER from the beginning for the first time after I finished watching The Pitt, and she shows up halfway through the show as a nurse's mom who has untreated bipolar disorder and the way she portrays that is an acting masterclass (I looked it up afterwards and she actually won an Emmy for her performance which I'm not surprised about). The woman is an absolute treasure

Ashley Thomas

this is a great movie. the acting is so good. a true classic.

GemmaBeeBee

That must have been such a brutal experience for her - it can’t have helped that the nurses and the other hospital staff that are in the life-support scenes were actual medical professionals who tended to Harling's sister in her last days. Harling then played the minister at Shelby's funeral (he was also at the wedding). Maybe they treated it all as a catharsis

Ben Gilbert

I don't mind Tandy getting an Oscar. She was great as Miss Daisy but in truth the award was more of a respect and goodwill award after a lifetime of great work.

Guy Francisco Polin

Contrary opinion. I always found the movie to be a facile examination of grief, and Sally Field shrieking "Whyyyy!" at her daughter's grave site gives me a headache every time. Ever notice how every male character is either a goof or sad sack of some kind?

Erin Mileur

When Julia Roberts tells Sally Field she worries too much the first thought in my head is she is a mom their no such thing as worrying too much.

danzthename

One of my favorite movies of all time. So many funny quotes. I don't think any movie makes me cry as hard as this one does. Sally Field just destroys me at the end.

Youtalkingtome

For real. You hire Dolly Parton knowing what kind of character you are going to get with Dolly Parton. I felt like she was perfect for her character.

Karen Simpson

I agree. It's so over the top melodramatically it's like nails on a chalk board. Every moment that could resonate is either giggled away with a comment or we laugh it off, like when Louisa is presented to Sally Field as her personal punching bag through which she can express her grief. Ugh. Fake, fake, fake. My husband hates the movie for its depiction of men, who are framed as idiots and buffoons, save for the Sam Shepard character. Here are some movies that explore death and grief in a much more meaningful way: ORDINARY PEOPLE, MAN IN THE MOON, THE SON'S ROOM (Italy, 2002), MANCHESTER BY THE SEA.

R.I.P. Tom Skerritt. Who just passed away.

acidnova

Literally the same day as this video was posted! He was 93.

Gail Hislop

Julia was 21 when she made this movie and Sally was 42, so their real age difference was right as mother and daughter. Shirley was only 55, but her character was perhaps in her ‘70’s.

fire12wife

Tom Skerritt passed away.... what a great comedic actor in this movie! I was literally just watching this reaction when my husband told me that he passed. I know you guys have seen Top Gun, but a rewatch in his honor would be great!

fire12wife

Tom Skerritt passed away, yesterday... he was 93 years old, and died of natural causes. Loved him in this movie, but Top Gun (1986) will always be my favorite! He had filmed a scene for Top Gun: Maverick (2022), but they didn't end up using it. I don't think they are far enough in production on the third movie to expect that he could be in it, but it would be great if he were in it.

Heather

They have The Man in the Moon on their watch list, and I CAN’T WAIT!

acidnova

Dolly was so good at not taking other people's shit and doing it with class.

Julzy

All the actresses are great in this, but my favorite is Shirley MacLaine. Her physical comedy with the dog is hilarious. 92 & still sassy!💐

Lola Lirola

And, how curious, all of them are about men's grief. I don't mind how men are portrayed in this movie. There's none of them in the original play, and they occupy the same placeholder status that women have in most movies, so it balances out.

Lola Lirola

Me too! She'll always be Madison to me, and then Pris, from Blade Runner.

Lola Lirola

This movie had so many quotable quotes! "If you can't say anything good about anybody, come sit with me!". Sally Field gives a masterclass in this movie, bue everyone is truly on their A game. Shirley McLane does steal the show, and I aspire to her level of zero f*cks to give.

Karen Simpson

Does it matter? Good movies don't take the secondary characters for granted, regardless of sex. But no. The central character in MANCHESTER BY THE SEA is male, but his estranged wife (Michelle Williams, Oscar nominated here) is given a meaty role in support. MAN IN THE MOON, teen girls. The remaining two about the family unit.

Julzy

RIP Tom Skerritt at 93 today🕯️

Julzy

This is the first time I noticed that Janine Turner (Northern Exposure, Cliffhanger) was Miss Merry Christmas.

Ashley Thomas

comming back here today to say RIP tom skerritt. honestly 93 is a pretty good age to make it to.

Dani

Oh, one of my favorites! So glad you enjoyed it. I never not cry during Sally Field's scene at the cemetery no matter how many times I see it. She really makes you feel her grief every time. And agreed, as fantastic as Sally was, Shirley McLaine and Olympia Dukakis stole the movie whenever they were on screen together.

Juley

I always found it amusing that the playwrite/screen writer in real life was one of the goofy teenage brothers of Julia Roberts’ character. I loved that he wrote himself that way in the film. The entire story is based on what he saw happening to his mom and sister and their friends. But he didn’t make himself central to the plot. He kept the focus on the main characters.

Juley

Knowing this play/movie is based on real events makes it even more powerful. It was written by one of the younger brothers of Shelby (Susan IRL). Yep, one of those goofy teens. I must say that I hate Jackson’s character just because I know what happened in real life. He remarried 5 months after Susan/Shelby died. It was hearing Susan/Shelby’s little boy call the new woman “mama” that made him write the play to make sure his sister would be remembered.

Youtalkingtome

I know. That's incredibly sad. What an absolute legend he was

Youtalkingtome

We can all aspire to be as fabulous as Clairee. Yes, we all need a good cry once in a while

Youtalkingtome

She deserved it. What a cast, and she stood toe to toe with them

Emily Nash

Hey! I am a newer Patreon member but have been a silent follower on YouTube for a while, and I wanted to express how I loved your reaction to this movie. I have seen Steel Magnolias many times and it still gets me each time. At the end of the movie I hand wrote notes to my parents and sisters telling them how much I love and care about them maybe because I was feeling all of the emotions from the movie. Anyway, I always look forward to your reactions and analysis! Thank you! :)

Rich H

RIP Tom Skerrit! Another great movie of his that I recommend is A River Runs Through It.

Ben Gilbert

I had forgotten he was in MASH way back in 1970.

Ben Gilbert

I loved her in Northern Exposure. I thought she was the prettiest woman alive.

Ben Gilbert

Fruit cocktail is the traditional choice but people make it with all sorts of canned fruit. The flour needs to be self-rising.

ScarlettMi

If the Academy weren’t generally biased towards dramas, I would have loved to have seen Meg Ryan nominated for When Harry Met Sally that same year.

ScarlettMi

Sally Field is 21 years older than Julia Roberts. I really like them being cast as mother and daughter here.

Barbara Panigot

First time watch for me. Loved it!❤️❤️🎃🎃

Karen Simpson

Okay but that could be 4 months from now. Joe and Kevin should scale back on TV reactions and ramp up on doing more movies. Some of us are paying 90 bucks a pop for movies.

Martin Kelly

He was worried that his nephew won't know about his mother. The father remarried extremely fast like 5-6 months, and the nephew was calling another woman "mother".

Martin Kelly

We had some bird full trees like this, and the birds were so noisy that you could not hear the TV inside the house. We also would scare them off temporarily by making a lot of noise (including shooting blanks up in the air - not to hit any birds but to get them to move but we were teenagers)

acidnova

Were you at all prepared? The first time I watched it (maybe 4 years ago) I went in already knowing that it famously makes people cry though I didn't know what happens. I hope you had some tissues with you!

Barbara Panigot

Yes, I knew there was a death. It still had me weepy.

BrummaGen

Brothers and Sisters was the first time I saw Sally Field, I think. I enjoyed that show.

BrummaGen

First time for me too. Very moving but no tears for me. I'm not particularly hard-hearted, but perhaps I was too much forewarned about it being a weepy and that meant it wasn't such a shock.
