Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Season1, Episode 14

Jamie D

Any time I've had a friend come out as bisexual, I can't help but go, "Ok, cool. Like, I know that this is an important and serious moment for you.....but there's a song I need you to watch...."

I remember that when I first saw this episode I was absolutely overjoyed, because it addressed two things that I'd been feeling for a while, and I was worried that the writers didn't care about -- but I was wrong, they did! (1) That Rebecca is terrible with money, we've seen her throw vast sums away repeatedly. And here we see it all coming home for her; she's broke. (2) That Rebecca is indeed "the villain in her own story." When we got the song that says exactly that, I cheered! From here on, I knew I could trust the writers. Aside from this, we had other delights: Darryl's wonderful "Gettin' Bi", which you ID'd correctly as prime Huey Lewis; the introduction of Maya to the firm; the resolution of the water-scandal story; AND the ongoing delight that is Darryl + White Josh.

I really, really enjoy watching your reaction to this show because you two externally process all the psychological and ethical questions the show raises. It's great. So many of the behaviors Rebecca presents are often (in public discourse, particularly by men, although not always maliciously) dismissed as evidence that she's "crazy." #showtitle But if you take the behavior seriously, as you both do, it can actually reveal a lot about faults, biases, and poor choices we're *all* guilty of at one time or another. Case in point: I love in the "villain" song that Rebecca tries to protect her positive self-image with, "Wait - I can't be a bad person because sometimes I do good things." As if a good act in one part of your life cancels out a bad behavior elsewhere. We all do that. I love that it gets reflected back so cleverly.

One unrelated question that I'm not sure where to ask, so I'm putting it here (sorry if I missed a notification): There haven't been any Happy Endings reactions in weeks now -- has it been dropped?

Emptysea93

I hope not, Happy Endings is so good and its legitimately one of the reasons I subscribed to this Patreon

Yes we have dropped it from the schedule. We may bring it back if the demand is there, but it's not looking like it.

Thank you for saying that. We try our best to give honest and insightful reactions to every show! Rebecca is a relatable character partially because we've all been there, albeit not to the extent she goes hopefully!

We were starting to wonder if her endless money was just going to be a bit on the show. Can't wait to see her redemption arc going forward. Gettin Bi, almost made me spit my drink out lol

No spoilers, but she's got a ways to go (4 seasons, after all), Rebecca does have genuine mental health issues that need to be addressed, more than most of the people in the audience, but again that's what makes the reflection on the audience so important. It facilitates empathy.

I guess you have ways of telling how many members have watched each reaction, and those numbers are telling you that Happy Endings is the least viewed, or something like that? I respect that, but I regret it at the same time. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend made me become a Patron instantly, and I'm almost equally devoted to Schitt's Creek and now Fleabag. But Happy Endings was the other item on your weekly schedule I looked forward to, this is the only source for reactions to it, and I hope someday you'll find it possible to restore it to the schedule. In the meantime, all best.
