Fleabag, Season 1, Episode 6

Comments

Jamie D

I'm not sure if I just didn't see the Bo revelation coming, or if I was subconsciously trying to avoid acknowledging the foreshadowing. Either way, the reveal was, as you said, a total gut punch. Absolutely love how the season came full circle with the only person who can show compassion being the guy who had to go to a retreat to learn not to harass and assault women. Perfect.

As a tv show I feel that this is wholly unique, the character archs are both fulfilling and very well thought out.

Kudos to Joe for figuring out the revelation in advance -- I certainly didn't when I first watched this. Also you're both quite right about how the series developed. Phoebe Waller-Bridge planned it as a single season (growing out of her 80-minute solo standup show), 6 episodes and done. It was so well received that there were international pleas for more. She insisted that there wasn't more to tell, but after a lapse of time she decided that there was enough more to say about Fleabag for ONE more season. And they made it, and that's it, a completed entity. I'm not going to say season 2 is "better," but it goes places you never expected, very satisfyingly so. As for their godmother, Fleabag said it best in her first sentence about her, "She's not an evil stepmother, she's just a [rude word]."

For something after this series ends, have you guys seen The Good Place? It's a totally unique half-hour series, 4 seasons of 13 episodes each, very funny but also thoughtful. Just don't research it so you don't encounter spoilers; they matter. (If it's not out of line for me to mention it, The Good Place also has fervent fans who'll want to subscribe.)

The Godmother is so infuriating because she's basically untouchable. If you set the tray down and leave, that's what she wants (for you to not be in the Father's life anymore). If you stay and behave, that's what she wants (for you to be belittled and controlled). If you throw a scene, that's what she wants (for you to make yourself look terrible and turn others against you). Really the only goal is to get to a place where The Godmother is irrelevant: you stay present in your Father & sister's lives and yet inert/unreactive regardless of what she does. But that takes a lot of time, growth, and maturity.

Yes. thoroughly recommend The Good Place, amazing writing and a true comedy. Would be perfect for you two if you have not seen it.

Actually it's more important than that, PWB couldn't initially figure out a critical aspect of the show's production, how to make it work beyond a single season. She solved the problem brilliantly, and I will present that [to Joe & Kevin] once they finish S2, since it is integral to S2 and essentially a spoiler in itself. (N.B. not my discovery, someone else did a brilliant analysis that I will provide the link to).

She really is an infuriating antagonist. We were hoping her father would wake up to how terrible she really is, looks like we'll have to find out in season 2.

Youtalkingtome

You know, I never realized she was a stand up as well. That makes total sense. I really need to take a deep dive into her career because this was just brilliant

Youtalkingtome

We've never seen it but we've definitely talked about it. We've got a list of shows that we are thinking about doing and that is on it.

I didn't mean to give the impression that she ever worked as a standup comedian -- she's an actress and a writer. It's just that her stage show Fleabag was just her with a microphone on a bare stage, no set or costume or other actors. It was streamed to theaters once, and it's been on Prime in the past but seems to be unavailable now.

How about Monk? It's hilarious and Tony Shalhoub puts on an absolute MASTER CLASS in acting.

JVTrickypants

Or actually Breaking Bad! Despite how much I love Monk that is a better show, and also actually quite funny too.

Or Sopranos....there's so many!!! Trying to pick ones also that aren't network as 20+ episodes per season could be tough.
