That quote from Smitty was from the "Port Huron Statement" made by the Students for a Democratic Society- the start of the hippie movement- anti-war movement etc that led to the eventual student campus sit-ins and civil rights support.

Yes- this is a real brand and "The cup of Joe" came from WWII- Martinson's was part of Army rations along with cigarettes....

Take your time no rush but just wondering if we will get succession tonight?

Since its 1962 and Smitty has already graduated and his friends still in college sent him the manifesto these would be kids graduating a year or two later in 1964 or so in the height of the bus rides to the South to register African American voters and LBJ escalating Vietnam in 1964 after the Gulf of Tonkin incident....so like Chekov's gun pre-saging the future in a play, the writers are brilliant again

Actually the coffee started after the Civil War, but the brand wasn't put into rations until the 1920s during Prohibition by the Sec of the Navy...It then spread to all the services in WWII....GI Joe as the slang for the "average Joe" in the Army came from the prevailing use of this coffee and their ad campaigns at the time...after the War the coffee was fading since new people didn't drink it- just veterans like the show implies- hence the desire to get "kids" in the 60s to drink it

heheheheheh

I think you guys are wrong about Ken. You need to remember that homosexuality was illegal at the time and most people weren't exposed to gays and the gay culture like we are today, or the subtle cues and signals on the way they act. Heck, I live in 2023 and my gaydar is still totally wonky. Ken doesn't realise a thing and neither does Kitty. Betty and Don live in Ossining. PS: I joined Patreon because I am such a huge Mad Men fan and you guys are the only reactors who actually get this show. I am lowkey a bit sad that my name has never been called out by you guys :( I know it's a bit silly.

We weren't 100% but at the end it was pretty clear that we had the wrong read. Thanks for joining, it's easy to get a show when you really enjoy it! Also we totally called your name out! It's been a while but Kevin definitely did!

The NYC Stonewall riots happened in the summer of 1969 when gay men actually fought back and injured the vice squad cops after the police raided and severely beat a bunch of patrons as they tried to shut down a gay club in Greenwich Village. Sodomy laws were in full force in 1962 so in many states it was a felony even for a married heterosexual couple to engage in what we might politely call "non-missionary" acts. Salvatore was definitely closeted and got married so his own traditional Catholic Italian mother (the one who he said Ciao Ciao to in season 1) and brought up to NYC (as he revealed in this episode) wouldn't wonder what was up with him. Thats why when the Ben Jolie lipstick guy propositioned Sal over drinks in Season 1 he said "Are you kidding me?". Ken and the other guys would never have met an openly gay man in the normal day to day life...the only one who might could be Paul Kinsey who had the African American girlfriend and Joan called out as a fake Bohemian since the town he live in NJ was known for it Jazz, Bohemian, and gay subcultures

The show was interesting to me when I first watched it since I was born in 1966 and may father who was born in 1939 would have been the same age as Peggy, and my mother would have been the same age as either Roger Sterling's daughter or Duck Phillips' daughter

Oh dear Sal lol. Ken's not a bad looking bloke but it's more like Sal's starved for romantic fulfillment. Understandably. I'm glad for realism sake nothing happened between them.

I find many aspects of you discussing Mad Men fascinating… You often project things on to the character(s) when it’s really a sign of the times. In the 1960s people littered; society actually sucked, the Drapers were sadly a reflection of the 60s. I did a feature segment in the 2000s on the first PSA campaign about combatting littering. It debuted (KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL) about the time this season of Mad Men is set, but the first state (Pennsylvania) didn’t establish littering laws/fines until 1972 while most other states followed in the late 70s. I’m a 80s child and I have many memories of my parents and their friends littering. And for the most part they didn’t suck. Lol.

It's crazy to think how far we've come in terms of littering and recycling as a whole. It was a different time and obviously there are darker things happening but it was a weird touch.
