Would Eddie Van Halen count as a classic rock guitarist?

Mermaid Day

This is one of the best episodes of the season! Kudos to Kola Bokinni and Billy Harris for their performances as Isaac and Colin. Roy is becoming more and more Ted-like, he volunteered to talk to Isaac, he told a story at the press conference...and I'm here for it! Higgins is hilarious, and I just love Jamie more and more with each episode.

Roy definitely sees a lot of himself in Isaac and the show does a fantastic job visually showing that this episode. The way Roy approaches Isaac in the shoe room totally parallels the scene in the season 1 finale where Keely follows Roy to the locker room after he hurt his knee and played his last game. Roy was very emotional and yelled at Keely to leave him alone just like Isaac yelled at Roy in this episode. But like Keely did with him, Roy doesn’t leave and instead stays and supports him. At the start of their respective scenes, both Keely and Roy don't say a word and just continue to walk over to the upset person. I’ve always found that moment with him and Keely so incredibly touching and to see Roy now switch roles was awesome. I'm sure Roy totally saw his past self in that moment with Isaac and knew exactly how to handle it based on how Keely handled it with him. Roy was also influenced by Ted and Rebecca, in addition to Keely this episode. The advice he passes on to Isaac is basically what Rebecca told him after he didn’t do the press conference. Specifically - "Get out of your own way". And then Roy gives Isaac similar advice when he says, "You got to to deal with that or you're gonna f*ck up whatever it is you actually do care about". And then as you pointed out, he pulled a Ted by answering a question at the press conference with a personal story.

I love all of Roy's nicknames for the reporters -- especially that they all know who they are! One of my only quibbles with this season is that we haven't had enough Roy up to now (perhaps having to do with Brett Goldstein's additional duties on "Shrinking") and that when he's been there, it's largely been as comic relief. This episode fixed that in a big way and reminded me why he's one of my favorite characters (of any show, honestly). The Collin and Isaac storyline is so great, and maybe my favorite part is that, once Collin has come out to the team, he even plays better because this huge weight is off of him and he can finally unleash his potential. I also kind of love the editing choice to not show us the moment that he literally says the words. We know what he's going to say. The team's response is what matters and we see that in all of its glory.

I loved how you guys approached the whole "Season 3 of Ted Lasso has been worse" It has not, it's on the same level of the other seasons, it's just working around different topics and many, many people wants to avoid them and get straight back to the old storylines

It’s not something they focus on in the scene, but the way Keely looks at Roy as he tells the story during the press conference really got me. She’s never centered in frame and is mostly in the background, but the look on her face completely conveys everything she feels about him.

When I saw some reactions to how Isaac responded when he saw Colin's phone I didn't really understand that so many were taking it as homophobia. This season has had a number of callbacks to season 1 and I thought right away that this was another. While they didn't delve into it much that season or after they certainly set up the likelihood that these two had a close friendship, even if some of their bonding was done at Nate's expense. It was nice acting by Kola Bokinni in that moment because I really felt as though he was hurt more than bothered by learning this about Colin. It was a great scene between them at the end and an all around great episode.

I really enjoy the fact that they made the creative choice to cut away from Colin’s coming out to the team. As you guys said, it’s a private moment. As a gay person who’s been outed against their will before, I enjoyed them making the choice to deny the audience this access.

I think it's my favorite creative choice of the season. It was really relatable in a way that, true or not (not sure), felt like it had been planned by a queer person.

Yes! I love seeing where these characters are gunna end up! We've grown with them. It's going to be so hard saying goodbye.

I love that Roy is really starting to break out of the shell that is "Roy Kent" we've seen that he's a really good guy but the fact that everyone is really wearing on him, it's so refreshing to see him act differently.

I really liked the editing choice as well. It was a really powerful moment at the end of the game when Colin was celebrating. Great episode and great performance from the actors all around this episode.

She was crying and looked very emotional! I love how they had her in the background. She's really conflicted this season and I can see why.

I did forget that they had a close friendship. This season has many call backs to the first and at this point it feels like a distant memory.

I worked for a Belgian club and the problem a lot of people don't understand about football clubs is that you have a group of players from all different kinds of backgrounds. It's hard enough to come out in Western culture, but the locker room of a football club isn't Western culture. It's a mix of often deeply religious people, both Muslim and Christian from South America, Africa, and the Arab world. And the goal of a sports team is to win trophies together. As much as I want it, it's not the place where the world gets changed. I know a few players who are out (for their colleagues) but it's not something that's get discussed because the reality is not everyone will take it well. And there are a plethora of subjects that just don't make it in the locker room because it would negatively affect the team. We had a Serbian player who grew up during the war in Yugoslavia, during an international fixture he tore down an Albanian flag being flown over the pitch, and it nearly sparked a war. All while at our team had two Bosnian players, and it never was a problem because those topics don't get discussed in the locker room. This is all great for TV and how we want it to be, but the reality is, that we're just not ready for this. Football is a real international sport, with people from different nationalities, not just different ethnicity or religious backgrounds. An Iranian Muslim kid from Tehran is different from a third generation Iranian Muslim kid from London.
