I'm 57, so born in 1966 and raised in NYC and live in the Long Island suburbs....Yes- they definitely DID tear down the old Penn station in 1963 before I was born to build MSG (which is at 33rd and 7th in Manhattan to open it up for the NY Knicks, NHL Hockey and rock concerts)- this was one the major events that led to the start of historical preservation moves across the US to save landmarks- mainly by Jackie O after JFK was killed and when she remarried Onassis. In the last few years they "repurposed" a major landmark- gutting the 33rd St and 8th Ave MAIN Post Office in NYC, moved Penn Station across the street by tunneling 200 feet under that corner post office building and connected Grand Central at 42nd and Lex to Penn Station by subway and rail. The NE Corridor AMTRAK line that runs from Boston to DC (that Joe Biden bragged about riding from Delaware to DC every day) goes into Penn Station on the West Side (as do the NJ Transit lines) while the Long Island Railroad (serving the Eastern NYC suburbs) and MetroNorth serving (NYC northern suburbs) are on the East side and they expanded the underground plaza network into a much larger Grand Central that now extends many blocks North and West to link the two. This recent remodel started pre-pandemic and opened up in March 2023 to tie this all together into a massive NE rail hub

Betty is from Phillie- and the brother lives near there- and Don and Betty live in Westchester- 30 miles north of NYC in the suburbs, so half-way for the nursing home would be somewhere random in NJ. So Joe and Kevin-you are right- Betty's father needs to live with one of them or be in a care facility near NYC or Phillie

I think Peggy is irritated by Don because she expected him to agree with her about Ann Margaret and because she’s right that if the audience for Patio is women the ad should be appealing to women. She says to Bobbie Barrett in season 2 that she never expects Don to be anything other than what he is but I don’t think that’s true. She expects more from him here or at least a different reaction. His reaction isn’t that different from Harry and Ken.

Can't wait for that 11/23/63 wedding! Originally airing on August 23, 2009, 'Love Among the Ruins' is Episode 2 of Season 3 of Mad Men. It is the 28th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.8, placing it as the #13 ranked episode of this season and #23 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I can see why Peggy is frustrated. However, Don is right. He could have handled the situation, like most things, much better.

Paul is such a dummy not to realize he was poisoning the well with the MSG people, but I do also kind of feel for him. There are a few characters on the show who are artists making the best of living in a world where artists are not respected - Peggy, Sal, Paul, and Don all fall under this heading. I think Don’s the only one who has a visceral enough understanding of survival to see that. Paul has an aesthetic objection to MSG, just as Peggy has one to Patio. She can dress it up however she likes - in the end, she thinks it’s bad, pandering art, and Paul thinks the same of the Garden. I think Don thinks so too, of both of them. The look on his face while he’s watching Ann-Margret is bemused and admiring, but what he’s digging is the craft, he knows it’s shallow and stupid conceptually. And I think he gives Peggy a good life lesson for an artist when he tells her to suck it up. Paul needs to learn that too. I always think about that scene when I take a theatre directing gig for a payday, which I try not to do too often, but hey, money is money and you can’t pay your rent with Bertolt Brecht and Anton Chekhov. Be nice if you could, but that’s not the world we live in. Every artist has to struggle with the balance between survival and transcendence. We almost never get both.

Didn't really think of it that way. They all admire something but they have to let it go in the end. The real world interrupts the fantasy.
