YEs- thats Medgar Evers in the "dream" sequence- violent death signifier as being the first major civil rights leader of the 60s who was killed. Some speculate that this juxtaposes the less than subtle racism in the North of the Admiral TV situation where Pete is oblivious that after Medgar Ever's death African American people wouldn't want to watch the news plus the execs who don't want to do business if it might offend a racist client- versus the violent suppression in the segregated south with the outright murder of civil rights leaders

The ERA fell ONE state short of passing the 39 needed mainly due to Phyllis Schlafey and other Reagan-era conservative woman organizing to block it

And yes it is NOT clear that baby was in the lap of the guard's wife so some think it might have died...another reference to death. Perhaps even that the guard felt his child died since he wasn't a "good enough" man after all. Matthew Wiener was interviewed about it later and said that guard was ashamed since he wasn't really a good man- the child lived- but he had no way to change his attitude that all prisoners at Sing Sing were evil...possibly also another link back to racism- thinking all minorities are evil through monolithic thinking

Interesting insight. I always interpreted it discomfort on the guard’s part about opening himself up to a stranger in that era, but these other interpretations make sense and are more compelling.

Don uses the Balzac line “Our worst fears lie in anticipation” in his conversation with the guard, which is what Sal quotes to the London Fog people at the beginning of the season.
