I felt the exact same way you did the first time i watch this : "what's the big deal ?" But I think the key to understanding this is that David notoriously has trust issues, he's been burned before, and the realization that there's this whole other side to Patrick's life, that he doesn't know about and doesn't seem to know about him, can't be an easy one.

Noah Reid has been on a show called Outer Range after Schitt's. He also does theater and performs as a musician.

While I agree Patrick didn't do much wrong, I think you two are seeing it from your presumably healthy relationship perspectives and histories David has literally never had a meaningful healthy relationship. Every person he has ever been with has at best abandoned him, and at worst were emotionally abusive and manipulative. Likewise as we learned through the first few seasons, he has also been lied to by his family most of his life, including them letting him think he really is a successful art curator. As a result David has extreme trust issues, and though we have not seen all the details, it is made clear that David has been telling Patrick his fears and anxieties about his mistrust. At the same time, Patrick is a catch, objectively. Not only is he sweet, kind, and funny, but he is also obviously musically talented and extremely attractive. He is everything David admires and is looking for. But at the same time he has been identifying and presenting as straight his entire life before David. As far as I know you two do not identify as queer, many of us have felt the heart break of meeting a person and dating them only for them to realize they arent queer and they were exploring their sexuality. (while this is fine, it doesnt make the heartbreak easier) So I think to David, not only has Patrick encouraging David to trust him while simultaneously NOT telling him the truth, which is the ultimate betrayal to David considering his history, but there is also a fear that their entire relationship has just been an "experiment" to Patrick, and that Patrick never cared about him... it is an over dramatic and unhealthy reaction to be sure, but you have to remember David's background.

Since you asked... I do think you're being a little hard on David, even toward the end of your discussion when you came around a bit. I agree that the only thing Patrick did wrong was not telling David about Rachel, but I guess I think that's a MUCH bigger deal than you do. We all love Patrick (me too), but he has his faults like the rest of us. And one of them (this isn't the last time we'll see it) is that he goes to great lengths to avoid awkward conversations. He and David have been together 4 months, and (as Moira says) he "sees" David clearly and understands his insecurities. Surely there was SOME moment in those months when Patrick might have mentioned that he used to be engaged, off and on for years, to a woman. And it might have occurred to him in the last few days to mention that this woman is now in town and texting him constantly trying to get back together. Staying silent on all that doesn't quite go with "You have nothing to worry about," when he knows she's around and David is insecure. Certainly David overreacts and makes a bigger drama out of the situation than it warrants; but we know David, that's what he does. And just as he's almost ready to let his guard down and not do that so much in this instance, THIS happens, confirming all his lurking fears. He can admit he's probably making too much of it ("I am damaged goods"), but as we all know (and as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend also shows us), recognizing your own unhealthy reactions is a lot easier than doing something to correct them.

By the way, the guy who was totally up for a threesome or foursome is Jake.

Catherine O'Hara received the Governor General Performing Arts award and Noah Reid honored her by singing Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" (he's also playing piano) I highly recommend giving it a watch. The video is available on youtube, there is a version that is a split screen of him performing and her reacting to it. It's beautiful.

So, randomly running into a partner's ex is one thing, randomly running into them and finding out they've been in your partner's dms for the past few months trying to get back together and your partner hasn't mentioned it to you is an entirely different ballgame, especially if you already have trust issues from prior relationships. From Patrick's perspective, he's probably just been ignoring his ex and hoping it'll all go away, to avoid the awkward conversation, which is a totally understandable sentiment, but for David, who, as you pointed out, is always one foot out the door in relationships because experience has told him that his partners always are, this could totally read as Patrick keeping his options open, since as far as I recall they haven't previously had a conversation about whether Patrick is gay or bi/pan.

that's why I kind of understand David's reaction. Patrick didn't just hide the fact that he was once engaged, but the ex-fiancé is in town looking for him and was in his DMs for months trying to get back with him as well. if my partner would hide something like that from me, I would also think they might be considering it, playing on my insecurities of not deserving a relationship and thinking they would leave me the second they find someone who is not "damaged goods"

No and everyone is different. Just because we feel that way doesn't mean David has to as well. Especially with all the trust issues he has.

Youtalkingtome

That's true. Patrick should have brought it up. In 4 months, bringing up the fact that you were once engaged seems like a no brainer.
