Nathaniel and I Are Just Friends

The 8-month time jump is one of my favorite things the series ever did. I literally applauded its brilliance when the show first aired, because I'd been bracing myself for a long slog during the pregnancy, having to go through a bunch of predictable plot points. And instead, we leaped right over all that, and went right for the interesting stuff after everybody went through their changes. And how about those changes, huh? Back in season 1, who would have predicted that Valencia, whom we first knew as the humorless scary adversary, would be a party planner and dating a woman? Or White Josh would spend time in Mexico with Habitat for Humanity? Or Heather would be managing Home Base including a redecoration?

Your judgments about Nathaniel are well founded, but it's worth remembering that everybody, not just Rebecca, is on a four-season journey, and nobody's at the end of their evolution yet. Nathaniel is still to a great extent a spoiled rich kid who's not in the habit of considering the consequences of his actions on others. He still has a way to go.

I, being a hardcore musical theater fan (I've taught college courses on the subject), love all of Rebecca's and Sunil's references, and the way they go over Paula's head. I'm *not* a hardcore Rent person, but my guess is that its fans dislike the way the movie dropped half the songs and turned them into ordinary spoken dialogue, and thereby missed the spirit of the stage show. (As for Grease, both the stage and the movie versions have their devotees -- but there's no doubt that the two are extremely different.)

(Sorry, one more!) The series HAS been written about, in both psychological and musicological academic journals. There's even a book collection of articles about it, which I bought. It's maybe a bit heavily weighted on the dry serious side for my taste; I'd like at least a couple of chapters that acknowledge the fun of it. But it does get attention, and probably will continue to.

When I first watched this show, I didn't know I was queer, and Valencia dating Beth took me WAY by surprise, but rewatching with y'all I couldn't help but pick up on SO many hints that Valencia isn't straight, even back in the early first season, with how she acts with Rebecca, and her continued jealousy and insecurity with Josh, the way she talks about relationships, etc... the signs were all there, and wow does it explain a lot of her bitterness and self-hate in earlier seasons. The sheer levels of repression and discomfort with herself and her relationship, the way she always seemed more excited about events (like Josh proposing) than the actual love between them... Valencia's spent so much of the show (and presumably her life) trying to be what she thinks a perfect woman should be, esp in the eyes of men and her appeal to them. Granted, she very well may be bi/pan, but I get the feeling she just as likely may be a lesbian. She seems so happy and at ease with Beth. It's just oddly nice to see her happy in a partnership

The first time I watched this, I did NOT pick up on Beth hitting on Valencia, so it's funny that you two saw it....

I dunno about Valencia being a lesbian rather than bi/pan...remember certain revelations in season 4?

I can believe White Josh would build houses. He has always been sincere and nice. All the characters have come so far though and I agree the time jump was so interesting!

I feel that most stage to movie adaptations aren't great. Especially if you've seen the original version first, kind of like when you read a book before you see the adaptation.

Oh, one question that you asked, about the actress playing Dr. Akopian: She's a British-born actress named Michael Hyatt. She has done a lot of American TV, mostly guest appearances, but her recurring roles were on The Wire (where I know her from -- the very tough head of a drug empire), Ray Donovan, True Detective, Snowfall, and this. She says that this role was her first chance to perform as a singer in over 20 years. Her song "This Session Is Going To Be Different" is an almost-too-close reference to "Maybe This Time" in Cabaret.

Youtalkingtome

Who was she on True Detective? I can't remember her. Everyone has such high praise for The Wire. We have been considering that for a while.

The “Face Your Fears” reprise has always been one of my favorites. It’s one of the only songs that was recorded live on set instead of just using a pre-recorded playback. It makes it feel that much more raw.

Can I say I really love Maya ? I feel about her a bit like early Britta in "Community", where you could tell the show was not just using classic archetypes but inventing new ones. Maya is a (novel, AFAIK) archetype for the "Gen-Z woke/nerdy white feminist" and I like how she started out the butt of the joke but after she stood up to Darryl she became not only a one-note stereotype but often also the voice of reason, albeit one that expresses itself in humorously over-analytical ways. Like the woke/nerdy white feminist millennial voice of the show is being like "OK fine the kids are alright".

This is my problem with Paula, she never fully learns. Unlike Rebecca who actually has a mental health issue and is excruciatingly slowly getting help to try and get better, Paula is just a bad person without that underlying factor. I mean she is a terrible person to everyone at the office, but only reflected on it when her bestie stopped hanging out with her because she was too mean, and she only reflected enough to apologize to Sunil, not the rest of her co-workers.
