Wee Small Hours

heheheheheh

I was looking forward to this episode precisely for what happens to Sal and how Don deals with it - I couldn't spoil it for you guys, but several times when you were gushing about Don I thought "Oh you have NO idea what an asshole he can be."

Had to old off the last few episodes but now you can see the general theme of season 3: The Putnam Powell Brits view "Guy" who lost his foot after being run over by lawnmower as now "worthless" due to his disability , Pete uses sexual coercion on the German nanny, Betty tells Carla to her face that its "just not time for civil rights" after the iconic elementary school attack by neo-nazi segregationists, Don throws Sal under the bus for not whoring himself out because he is gay and even says that if it was some girl in the office they wouldn't think twice about it (and we see that Pete and Ken have gotten prostitutes for clients in prior seasons), Joan's husband is a spousal sex assaulter,.Bert is willing to wreck Don by using his secret identity against him to sign the contract in the 7/23 episode, Lane Pryce admires the tentacle porn in Cooper's office....the show has peeled off the "Leave it to Beaver" band-aid of 1950s/1960s nostalgia and shows that almost all of the characters are disgusting. But just like in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul- which I believe this show rivals- the writers get us to still like them in a way despite all of this. Hence the brilliance.

The Sal issue was such a WTF moment at the time that I completely forgot about Betty's, um, silliness with Carla.

Don’s “someone like you” comment to the teacher at the end of the episode is almost as bad as his “are you dumb or pure” at the beginning. Somehow still works on her because he’s Don Draper, I guess.

I was born in 1966 and Peggy is the same age as my later father, and Roger Sterling's daughter and Duck Phillip's daughter are about the same age as my mother. So this really put their world into perspective for me since I came of age- so to speak at age 8 watching Nixon resigning on TV along with the Fall of Saigon, and being a late teen in the first term of Ronald Reagan. So I basically can identify more with the cultural criticism and vapid greed portrayed in the movies Wall Street or American Psycho....further to my prior post about unpeeling the band-aid- I think the only "likable" characters at this stage of the show are Peggy, Ken, Sal, and Harry.

Betty's line about it "not being the time" for Civil Rights is actually quite brilliant. A lesser show would have had her make some kind of uncharacteristically demeaning crack about "negroes" as a cheap way of highlighting political and racial attitudes of the time. However Mad Men gives her a perfectly in character view that Civil Rights is just another problem to be dealt with at some unspecified future point, just like her father's deteriorating health and her own deteriorating marriage.

Everyone is disgusting. It's such a tough hang. Luckily the show is compelling enough and just downright riveting.

They are. Even the one's that are not "likeable" still have a certain likability factor. Don is still the man even though he is a horrible person. One of the best anti heroes ever.

Brilliant shot alert , at the fundraiser the ladies are making fun of the South saying it’s 1963 not 1863 while Carla is the background serving them drinks.

I still can't bring myself to hate Bets. I really want to at times, mostly for her parenting, but I can't get past that she's a product of her upbringing and being trapped for the times in a marriage to Don. I wouldn't want her as my mother or wife though lol.

Youtalkingtome

You know what? That's completely fair. We don't agree lmao and of course her upbringing and trauma inform who she is as a person. As a tv character, she's hard to love.
