Season 4 opens in late October/early November 1964 and episode 1 ends right after Thanksgiving. The sale of PPL to McCann would have been on January 1, 1964 based on what Conrad Hilton told Don, and the "heist" in the prior episode to end Season 3 spanned from Friday December 13, 1963 to Monday December 16, 1963 (Roger said" 4 guys shot their own legs off on Dec 13") - so a 10 month jump has happened between seasons and 3 weeks have elapsed during the first episode. Recall that Betty and Henry flew to Reno to spend 6 weeks to get residency and the divorce. Don tells Betty he won't contest the divorce on Monday Dec 16, 1963. so if they flew out that week to Reno. the divorce was in the first week oF February 1964. Don basically gave them EIGHT months to move out- October 1 1964

The new firm SCDP has only one floor instead of two in Sterling Cooper- the art department and Sal are on a different floor than Don's office in Seasons 1-3. Each department in SCDP basically has a full time lead person with temps acting as subordinates such as Joey working for Peggy- a "Potemkin Village" of sorts

Don's apartment is a dank dark place in Greenwich Village and reflects his state of mind and life while the office is almost antiseptic white and brightly lit- especially Roger's office. YEs he is self-loathing paying for sex and S&M at that...but in Season 2 HE was the one tying up Bobbi Barrett and leaving HER in the hotel room when she says a woman from Random House told her was into rough sex

Betty is refusing to move while Henry wants her to go- is it out of spite? Clinging to the past to avoid too much change? Did the "dog catch the car" with Betty getting the divorce she wanted and now realizes she doesn't know WHAT she wants?

Don tries to be a decent father- he has a separate bedroom with bunk beds just for the weekend custody, and his own bedroom is small- so he is basically living in a cramped 2 BR cave

You know, I forgot about that. Don might be a rather kinky guy. They don't really show the sex scenes. It's odd that they did this time around and it came off really, really dark.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah. I like what you said about the apartment reflecting his state of mind. I have a feeling we're in for a dark season.

heheheheheh

I hated Betty first time watching the show, but I have the benefit of seeing the show through the years and analysing different perspectives. But don't get me wrong...Betty is not a pleasant person, and personally am not defending her...it's more like having empathy or understanding why she chooses to do the things she does. It's not like "wow go Betty, you're so great!" But I just feel like, because he's the protagonist, Don gets a lot more passes than she does. At the end of the day, nobody is perfect, and those two are far from it anyway.

Was it just my feed or were J&K only coming out of the left speaker? I could hear the show in both but J&K were only on the left? Originally airing on July 25, 2010, 'Public Relations' is Episode 1 of Season 4 of Mad Men. It is the 40th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.5, placing it as the #10 ranked episode of this season and #8 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I LOVE SEASON 4. I’m so excited for this. I want to say so much about this season, but I can’t LOL

I always interpreted Henry going for it in the car, especially after turning down sex in the bedroom the previous night, as a sign that he really is uncomfortable living in the old house. He would rather have sex in a less comfortable car, because at least it's his. That's why Henry's mother's line about "living in that man's dirt" really stings. Not only is he sleeping in another man's bed every night, his wife still hasn't found closure on her previous marriage.

It makes sense to sympathize with Betty having seen the entire show, especially multiple times. But on first watch, especially at this point in the series, it's really hard to see the positives. This episode really shows Betty at her worst. She's spiteful, oblivious to others' emotional well-being, and outright cruel towards her children. Her Thanksgiving was every bit as uncomfortable to watch as Don's.

Will we get the Succession finale tonight?

You mentioned the "meta" nature of this episode- that's what the Jantzen ad is- "so well built, we can't show you the second floor". SCDP is smoke and mirrors with 71% of billings in Lucky Strike and not showing the "second floor" to clients. The Jantzen ad is just vapor- a sex appeal ad rather than the product. And at the end Don's second interview is all about image too
