This was Weiner's first time faux pas- Gamara vs Godzilla came out in Japan in Jan 1965 but 1966 in the US and its New Year's 1964/65 in this episode - Don is a good guy in a "Bro" way letting Lane see how a man of that time would escape reality through avoidance, food, liquor and purchased sex. Note how Don borrows Faye Miller's line from the prior episode- "Are you thinking of running to London to apologize because you want to- or because it's expected of you?"....the whole point of advertising and the undercurrent of this whole series

Doctors didn't tell WOMEN their diagnoses until the early 70s- so that WAS a thing in general and with women in particular until the feminist movement and with HIPAA in the 90s in general- even now there is a huge scandal that women's medical complaints are ignored as "hysterical" and get under-treated and men get full batteries of tests with the same seriousness of symptoms and complaints

Now we are set up for the other shoe to drop with Anna- the REAL low point of Don's life- just when we thought that last episode of season 3 with the divorce was the low point. It is a real dilemma- DO you tell a person you love with stage 4 cancer in her BONES that that has metastasized EVERYWHERE that she is dying?. Also we know Anna caught Don in 1950 when he deserted and isn't stupid- being dragged to specialists and then not hearing what is wrong with you wouldn't sail over her head in a second. Frankly I think she knows and SHE is the one being compassionate- letting Don leave without having to deal with her impending death- especially when she sees his mental state when Don says Betty never loved him since he was was low class and never good enough for her. That was the real gut punch for me- I think she puts out the fiction of "seeing the kids in the Spring as their Aunt and showing them the Buffalos, to spare DON by fronting that she doesn't know...

We see that Joan hopes to have a relationship with Greg and that he might not be a complete monster- a bulb seems to go off in his head and we get a glimmer that he has compassion for kids, that he DID operate on ghetto children as a resident, and for a second when he stitches her up- he looks in her eyes like he can't believe he was lucky enough to have married her. That is NO excuse for the domestic assault- he is a weak man who lashes out on her when he fails and he can never escape that. The tragedy is that If he could have just ben open and vulnerable and shared his hopes and fears with Joan he might not have done that deed, decided WITH her on a non-surgical residency- and they MIGHT have been happy. I think he realizes HE broke the relationship with that assault....and can't undo it- at least at this point in time

The undertreatment of women is especially bad with color women. Things like a stroke or a heart attack present in women as nausea instead of the typical chest pain in men.

I like this. You are right, Anna probably knows that something is very wrong and stays quiet. Two patients with stage 4 cancer have two different reactions to the news: Patient 1 - could get depressed because they are dying in 6 months and die in a week. Patient 2 - could have the will to live, great support, or a good belief system and even outlast their given time.

"Acapulco, where do you think there's more Mexicans, here or there" LOL I'm Latina and I laugh out loud EVERY TIME I hear that joke! This show is so messed up sometimes, and I love it lol I love Mad Men because the writing is so good, but OMG Jon Hamm is a handsome man and is great to look at. I love Anna so much. She is the closest thing that Don has to family and is shown so perfectly in Jon's acting how this breaks Don's heart.

I don't condone it- but we see that Lane lashes out at Joan since he is a decent man who doesn't cheat, loves his son, and still his marriage and life are falling apart for being so servile to his former PPL bosses- he kicks down- but then we see that he apologizes and feels like a heel for doing it

Anna

Man watching this made me tear up. I love Anna so much and I love how completely at ease Dick is when they're together. It's the most truly heartwarming parts of this show.

It broke ours too. She was such a pure person. Maybe the only one on the show who was truly a good person.
