the visceral shock i just felt recieving this notification… oh i’m so excited!

Just delighted you are doing this show, one of my favourites of the past ten years. I am a massive fan of the genre in general and this show in particular. I'm looking forward to providing plenty of non-spoilery info fluff as you guys go along. One thing I will say is that amongst us hard-core fans of The Americans, there's not a lot of agreement as to which is the best season (that's amazing, in a good way), but that there's nearly universal agreement that the finale is a contender for the finest end to a show of all time. Strap in.

The show is loosely inspired by the FBI Operation Ghost Stories which took place about ten years ago. (edit: 2010) The FBI arrested ten Russian sleeper agents in and around Washington DC, including the flame-haired beauty Anna Chapman, the very one that VP Joe Biden joked about on The Late Show with Jay Leno (linked below). The ten were all swiftly traded for four Western agents, including one Sergei Skripal, who was later the target of an assassination attempt in the UK. The botched nerve agent attack caused a massive international ruckus, leading to about 300 Russian diplomats (i.e. FSB officers) being expelled all across Europe and beyond.

The Keri Russell show with the hair is Felicity, of which the only thing I know is that America had a meltdown when she cut it.... :D

Youtalkingtome

Yes! Thank you! I'm in the same boat: I never watched the show, I just remember how everyone lost their minds when she cut her hair.

Halfway through the pilot, and you've already had the key elements the show is warmly known for. 😍 Wigs Cellos Fleetwood Mac Laundry (room)

I'm so glad you're watching this! It's another series that is so original, it's really impossible to predict where it's headed. The show ran for six seasons, covering the years 1981 to 1987. I saw an interview with a former spy who said this show is pretty accurate, except for the use of disguises (wigs and mustaches tend to be more obvious and make one stand out). And Joe, I'm sorry, but I put only ketchup on my hot dogs, and I'm proud of it. Don't oppress the minority.

Roland

You're referring to one of several Wired videos with Jonna Mendez, wife of the late Tony Mendez, who was the guy that Ben Affleck portrayed in Argo. She was the CIA Chief of Disguises, (yes, that became an actual job title), and she's a wonderful storyteller (there's a few videos of her giving lectures and stuff, she's a remarkable listen). In the link below Jonna breaks down the use of disguises in a bunch of spy movie and TV scenes, including one from The Americans pilot, so Joe and Kevin are safe from spoilers (for their new choice of show, at least). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUqeBMP8nEg Jonna has a bunch of other videos, all highly recommended, as is the book that Tony wrote (that she helped finish after his death), called The Moscow Rules, named after a rough set of do's and don'ts for working as a spy in unfriendly territory.

The Americans is, for me, the last in what I think of as the Great American Quartet - The Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men, and The Americans. Shows that, at the dawn of the 21st century, took a hard look at the American myth and where it had left us in incredibly detailed, novelistic fashion - Breaking Bad was sort of a coda, but that show was much more about human duality than about America specifically and, imo, was not the same level of quality. The Americans is the least of the quartet while The Sopranos is the best (although rewatching Mad Men with you guys has me reconsidering that calculation lately), but it’s still a masterpiece. I haven’t rewatched it since it was on, so I’m very excited to give it a fresh look. Those early prestige dramas, man. I don’t know if we’ll ever see that level of consistent quality again. They’re like great novels or plays. Game of Thrones was incredible entertainment, but it didn’t really SAY anything. I love Miss Maisel so much, and I’m enjoying your reactions to that too, but it’s not designed to be anything but comfort food. Kind of the optimistic counterweight to Mad Men. I keep waiting for something of this quality to turn up, and maybe it will someday, but the ‘00s and teens were a really special time in TV storytelling.

You said the word several times - it really is the main word when it comes to The Americans for me.....TENSION. Such a great job by the showrunners of making the viewer feel the tension throughout the series. That made me think of one suggestion if you'd like to partake - the next intro you do for every show you're watching - do a one or two word "association" to your thoughts/feelings etc regarding the show. Like for me and The Americans, it's "Tension". For West Wing it's probably "Best Drama". For Mad Men it's "Old Fashioned" (double-meaning there). For Ted Lasso it would be "Mental Health" etc. You two always do a great job of the intro/outros so a) trying to help you provide content and b) very interested in your thoughts for all the shows (and anybody else's that may want to comment below).

Weird Magic

So THIS is why I subscribe to your channel, I don't do it to many, and this is the first channel for me that wasn't to re-watch LOST with. I can't find anybody watching The West Wing I found one reaction to Mad Men (I think he was Dutch and VERY boring) I can't find anybody watching The Americans Not only are you two fun to rewatch with, but you're reacting to my favorite shows I can't find anywhere else, all at the same time! Kudos Kudos Kudos to your dedication and content creation!!! I started the first season of The Americans without my wife....got done with it, stopped, and said "You HAVE to watch this with me". It's now one of our favorites of all time. I know nobody cares what my top shows of all time are but I'm going to post it here anyway because of what I said at the top - kudos kudos kudos 1. LOST 2. The West Wing 3. The Americans 4. Ted Lasso 5. Who's Line is it Anyway

Weird Magic

The show is amazingly strong throughout - but just as a teaser as some shows tend to fall off or not stick the landing so to speak. Five of the final six episodes of the series are 9.0 or better. That is an insane number from IMDB. I really think you're going to enjoy this ride. Originally airing on January 30, 2013, 'Pilot' is Episode 1 of Season 1 of The Americans. It is the 1st episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.2, placing it as the #5 ranked episode of this season and #1 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Chris

Great excuse to rewatch this excellent show! Looking forward to the reactions

Chris

Agree with everything you wrote about this channel For me 1. The Sopranos 2. The Wire 3. Mad Men 4. Seinfeld 5. Star Trek TOS Honorable mentions The Office US & Siskel/Ebert

Roland

Another non-spoilery thing to look forward to is the excellent opening title sequence, understandably skipped for the cold open in Pilot. There's an interview somewhere out there with the designers, hopefully someone can post a link in due course.

Gayle Dick

This is a top show, think you will both get a lot out of it. Some of the sequences set to music are outstanding and memorable too

Michael Manville

Yes yes yes. I love this show and you will too. The acting is excellent throughout and the kids are really impressive at actually playing realistic kids. Also a top tier credit sequence imo.

Roland Cooke

The showrunners say they got lucky with Keidrich Sellati and Holly Taylor, and maybe that's true (they'd know better than me!), but honestly hanging around a cast of that quality has to be the best training any child actor could ask for, they really evolve as the seasons progress.

JVTrickypants

In case you haven't seen it, the Redford/Pitt movie Spy Game is amazing. Keri flashing the money to get in the apartment reminded me of it.

Youtalkingtome

So this is so strange, I literally put on Netflix before I do these comments and right before I read this that's the movie I put on. I love Tony Scott, it's a great movie!
